Pethia nankyweensis is a small, poorly known cyprinid barb from the streams and tributaries draining the Myitkyina area of northern Myanmar, first described by Kullander in 2008 from the Nan Kywe Chaung. Reaching just 1.5 in standard length, it is one of five species Kullander described from Myanmar in the same paper and belongs to the Pethia conchonius species group — a cluster of compact, predominantly reddish barbs distributed across the Indian subcontinent and adjacent mainland Southeast Asia. Because its range appears restricted to a small area of Kachin State and its populations have not been systematically surveyed, the IUCN assessed it as Data Deficient in 2010. It can be distinguished from the syntopic Pethia erythromycter by its straight rather than curved lateral line.

Taxonomy & naming

Pethia nankyweensis was originally described by Sven O. Kullander in 2008 in the genus Puntius, in a paper that diagnosed five new barb species from Myanmar: Kullander, S.O. 2008. Five new species of Puntius from Myanmar (Teleostei: Cyprinidae). Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 19(1):59–84. The type locality is small streams around Myitkyina in Kachin State, northern Myanmar; the epithet derives from the type stream, Nan Kywe Chaung.

The species was subsequently transferred to the genus Pethia, one of several genera erected to receive members of the old, polyphyletic Puntius following the revision by Pethiyagoda et al. (2012). FishBase retains the original combination Puntius nankyweensis as a synonym, and older literature may use that name. The Catalog of Fishes treats the current valid combination as Pethia nankyweensis (Kullander, 2008).

FishBase places the species in the Puntius conchonius species group, the conchonius group being a set of small to medium-sized barbs largely concentrated on the Indian subcontinent, many of which were transferred to Pethia. Dorsal soft-ray counts of 11–12 and anal soft-ray counts of 8 are recorded for the species.

Morphology

Pethia nankyweensis is a diminutive barb reaching a recorded maximum of 1.5 in standard length, making it one of the smaller members of its genus. The body form is compact and laterally compressed in the manner typical of Pethia, with a relatively high back.

A diagnostic character noted in the field is the straight lateral line, which separates it from the syntopic Pethia erythromycter, which carries a curved lateral line. Beyond this feature, detailed morphological data for wild-caught P. nankyweensis is sparse in the available literature, and the colouration in life has not been widely documented outside the original description.

Habitat

The species is known from small streams in the Myitkyina area of Kachin State, northern Myanmar, including the type locality Nan Kywe Chaung. It has also been recorded in association with Pethia erythromycter at Lake Indawgyi, a large shallow lake southwest of Myitkyina and one of the largest natural inland lakes in Southeast Asia. The IUCN estimates an extent of occurrence of approximately 6,000–6,62 mi², reflecting a geographically restricted known range.

Northern Myanmar at these latitudes experiences a seasonal monsoon climate, and the streams draining the Myitkyina basin likely fluctuate in volume, temperature, and turbidity across the year. The IUCN categorises the habitat as permanent inland rivers and streams (wetlands, inland). No detailed water-chemistry data specific to this species' habitat have been published; analogues within the Pethia conchonius group from the Indian foothills and northern Myanmar suggest tolerance of subtropical to warm-temperate freshwaters at broadly neutral pH.

FishBase classifies the species as demersal and tropical freshwater, with no quantified temperature or pH range recorded for the species itself.

Feeding

No published dietary data specific to Pethia nankyweensis are available. Members of the Pethia conchonius group, including the well-studied rosy barb (P. conchonius), are omnivores in the wild, consuming small invertebrates such as insect larvae and crustaceans alongside algae, plant fragments, and organic detritus picked from the substrate and the water column.

By analogy with close relatives, P. nankyweensis is presumed to be a generalist omnivore suited to foraging in the benthic and littoral zones of the small streams it inhabits. In any aquarium setting it would be expected to accept standard prepared foods supplemented with small live or frozen invertebrate prey.

Mating

No observations of mating behaviour in Pethia nankyweensis have been published. As a member of the Pethia conchonius group and the broader subfamily Smiliogastrinae, the species is expected to follow the egg-scattering, non-guarding reproductive strategy universal among barbs. In this mode a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief, close-contact presses.

No pair bond persists beyond the spawning act, no territory is defended, and no nest of any kind is constructed. The scattered adhesive eggs settle among plants or on the substrate and are abandoned immediately by both parents.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Pethia nankyweensis has not been documented in the available literature, and the species is not known to be in regular aquarium trade. By comparison with congeners in the conchonius group, including the readily bred rosy barb, a spawning setup with fine-leaved vegetation or a spawning mop, slightly acidic to neutral soft water, and warm temperatures would be appropriate for any attempt.

Egg-scattering barbs of this group typically produce adhesive eggs that fall among plants or onto the bottom; adults should be separated from the eggs promptly, as they will consume them. Larvae generally become free-swimming within a few days and require small live foods initially. These are inferences from the biology of congeners; no species-specific breeding data exist.

In the aquarium

Pethia nankyweensis does not appear to be established in the aquarium hobby, and no husbandry accounts are available in the literature reviewed. Its very small adult size of 1.5 in SL would make it suitable for a nano or species aquarium if it were ever to enter the trade.

Given its association with small Kachin State streams and its placement in the conchonius group, subtropical to warm-water conditions at roughly neutral pH with good oxygenation would likely suit the species. Any interested aquarist would face the practical difficulty that the species is extremely rare in commerce, its wild populations have not been assessed for sustainability of collection, and it has no established common name or trade presence.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Pethia nankyweensis as Data Deficient (DD) on 12 March 2010, with the assessment published in 2015. The justification is that the species is known only from a restricted area of small streams near Myitkyina in northern Myanmar, with an estimated extent of occurrence of roughly 6,000–6,62 mi², and that population size, trends, and threats have not been quantified. The assessment notes four recorded locations and calls for more research on distribution, population status, and the pressures the species faces.

Kachin State has experienced significant land-use change, infrastructure development, and ongoing conflict that limit biological survey work. The Indawgyi Basin, where P. nankyweensis has been recorded alongside P. erythromycter, is a protected wetland of regional importance, but the broader stream network near Myitkyina is not formally protected. Without survey data, it is not possible to determine whether the species is genuinely rare or simply under-collected; the Data Deficient designation reflects that uncertainty rather than a confirmed threat.
