Neolissochilus qiaojiensis is a large rheophilic cyprinid described by H. W. Wu in 1977 from Qiaojie, Yunnan Province, southwestern China, and is endemic to the rivers of the Irrawaddy drainage in that region. A member of the mahseer clade within the family Cyprinidae, it inhabits fast-flowing, clear, well-oxygenated hill streams over rocky and gravelly substrates at the fringes of the Himalayan watershed — conditions shared by its closest relatives across South and Southeast Asia. Neolissochilus qiaojiensis was described by the Chinese ichthyologist H. W. Wu in 1977, with its type locality given as Qiaojie in Yunnan Province, China. The species is placed in the genus Neolissochilus, a group of large Asian mahseers within the family Cyprinidae and order Cypriniformes. Its placement in Neolissochilus rather than in the older catch-all genera Barbus or Tor reflects the progressive restructuring of Asian cyprinid classification through the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries; a 2024 molecular study published in a Wiley journal on Tor and Neolissochilus divergence in Southeast Asia and South China confirmed the placement of N. qiaojiensis within the Neolissochilus clade. Conservation

Neolissochilus qiaojiensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Despite this absence of formal evaluation, there is clear cause for concern: the species is endemic to a restricted range within the Irrawaddy drainage in Yunnan Province, and surveys in that region have recorded rapid population declines in recent years. The Mengdian River, Dayingjiang River and Longchuanjiang River populations have all been noted as having declined, driven by traditional harvesting pressure as well as broader threats to Yunnan's river systems including dam construction, water extraction, sedimentation from land-use change, and pollution.
