Taxonomy & naming
Hypsibarbus suvattii was described by Walter J. Rainboth in 1996 as part of his revision of fishes of the Cambodian Mekong. The species epithet honours Dr Chote Suvatti, a Thai ichthyologist who contributed foundational work on the freshwater fishes of Thailand. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, the authority for valid names) records the valid combination as Hypsibarbus suvattii Rainboth, 1996.
The genus Hypsibarbus belongs to the family Cyprinidae and encompasses a group of medium-to-large Asian barbs of Indochina and adjacent regions. The name Hypsibarbus combines the Greek hypsi (high) with the Latinised barbus (barbel), referring to the relatively elevated body profile that characterises members of the genus. H. suvattii is distinguished by its fusiform body, four horizontal scale rows between the lateral line and the dorsal-fin origin, and seven to eight gill rakers on the first arch.
The species should not be confused with other large Hypsibarbus congeners of the Mekong drainage such as H. wetmorei or H. malcolmi, which differ in scale counts, proportions, and colouration. Older literature or regional Thai fishery records may list the species under informal or vernacular groupings of large river barbs.
Morphology
Hypsibarbus suvattii is a moderately large barb with a streamlined, fusiform body suited to life in flowing water. FishBase records a maximum standard length of 14 in, while fish assemblage surveys in the lower Mekong basin have reported a maximum total length of approximately 17 in, placing it among the larger members of its genus.
The body is laterally compressed with a somewhat elevated back, consistent with the genus name. Scale rows between the lateral line and the dorsal-fin origin number four, and the first gill arch carries seven to eight gill rakers. The fins are typical of active riverine cyprinids, with a dorsal fin positioned over the anterior portion of the body and well-developed caudal and pectoral fins that power sustained swimming.
Detailed colouration data are sparse in the available literature, though the species is described as a white-meat fish in trophic studies of the Mekong basin, a designation used regionally for omnivorous barbs with pale musculature rather than red-fleshed carnivorous species. Habitat

It is among the most important fish species recorded year-round at the Stung Treng RAMSAR site in north-eastern Cambodia, a floodplain reach of the Mekong of high biodiversity significance. Water conditions in the Mekong and Mae Khlong systems at mid-elevation are warm and tropical, with temperatures broadly in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius and fluctuating discharge that drives seasonal spawning migrations. Typical Mekong lowland water is moderately soft to slightly hard and near-neutral to slightly alkaline in pH, though seasonal monsoon inflow can shift these parameters considerably.
Feeding
Hypsibarbus suvattii is described as an omnivore in fish assemblage studies of the lower Mekong basin. Regional trophic classifications place it among the omnivorous white-meat barbs that feed on varied substrates — plant material, organic detritus, small invertebrates and benthic matter picked from the substrate and water column. Its benthopelagic habit is consistent with feeding in both the mid-water and near-substrate zones of large rivers.

Hypsibarbus suvattii is not an established aquarium fish and is rarely if ever encountered in the ornamental trade. Its eventual size of up to 14–17 in places it well outside the range suitable for typical home aquaria; it is a fish of large public aquarium displays or specialist facilities if kept at all in captivity.
For those maintaining large cyprinids in exhibition or research settings, a spacious tank with strong filtration, good oxygenation, and a steady current would be appropriate, reflecting its riverine background. Water temperatures in the low-to-mid twenties Celsius with near-neutral pH are consistent with its Mekong basin habitat. The omnivorous diet is broadly adaptable, but the seasonal migration behaviour exhibited in the wild has no practical analogue in captivity.
Conservation
Hypsibarbus suvattii is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, with the most recent assessment dated 8 March 2011 and conducted by Chavalit Vidthayanon. The Data Deficient designation reflects insufficient information to determine whether the species is threatened: its full distribution range and the severity of threats it faces require further investigation before a threat category can be assigned.
The species' habitats — the large lowland and upland rivers of the Mekong and Mae Khlong basins — are under sustained pressure from changing river hydrology, construction of upstream dams, increased sedimentation, deteriorating water quality through agricultural and industrial runoff, and loss of flooded riparian habitat. Research conducted in the lower Mekong basin and at the Stung Treng RAMSAR site in Cambodia documents these impacts on fish assemblages that include H. suvattii. The species' dependence on seasonal spawning migrations into smaller tributary streams makes it especially vulnerable to barriers such as culverts, weirs, and dams that interrupt connectivity between main channels and floodplain tributaries.
