Taxonomy & naming
Hypsibarbus wetmorei was described by the American ichthyologist Hugh McCormick Smith in 1931, with the type locality given as the Mae Nam Chao Phraya at Chainad, Thailand. Smith placed the species in the genus Puntius, and for much of the twentieth century it was known as Puntius wetmorei. Three synonyms were subsequently described: Puntius daruphani Smith, 1934; Barbus beasleyi Fowler, 1937; and Puntius daruphani tweediei Menon, 1954 — all now collapsed under the current valid combination.
The genus Hypsibarbus was established to accommodate the larger, high-backed "mahseer-like" barbs of Southeast Asia distinct from the smaller Puntius complex. The genus name signals this stature: hypsibos, Greek for high or deep, refers to the notably elevated dorsal profile that sets these fish apart from typical small barbs. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) records the valid combination as Hypsibarbus wetmorei (Smith, 1931), the parenthetical authority indicating the transfer out of Smith's original genus.
The specific epithet honours Alexander Wetmore, the American ornithologist and naturalist who was Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution during Smith's career — a dedication reflecting the collegial naming conventions of early twentieth-century ichthyology rather than any connection between Wetmore and the fish itself.
Morphology
Hypsibarbus wetmorei is a large barb with a distinctly deep, laterally compressed body — the high-backed profile characteristic of the genus Hypsibarbus. FishBase records a maximum total length of 18 in, though aquarium trade individuals seldom exceed 8–10 in standard length. The body is silvery on the flanks, often with a faint golden sheen, and the fins may carry traces of yellow or orange pigment; full colouration details from wild material are sparse in the available literature.
The typical barb bauplan applies: a terminal or slightly subterminal mouth suited to benthic and midwater foraging, a single dorsal fin, and a forked caudal fin. As in other large Hypsibarbus species, the body depth and robustness give the fish a presence in the water column more reminiscent of a small mahseer than the diminutive aquarium barbs of the trade. Habitat

Fecundity in large-bodied cyprinids of this type is typically high, with hundreds to thousands of small adhesive eggs per spawning event and no parental care once eggs are released.

Hypsibarbus wetmorei reaches sizes — up to 18 in TL — that place it firmly outside the range of all but the largest dedicated fish houses. Seriously Fish notes that individuals in the aquarium trade are commonly seen at 8–10 in standard length, which still demands a very large aquarium with strong filtration and substantial water movement to replicate the flowing-water conditions of its native river systems. The species does not occur naturally in standing water, and stagnant or poorly oxygenated conditions would be unsuitable.
The species is described as non-aggressive toward conspecifics in appropriate space but may consume small fishes — a consequence of its invertebrate-feeding habits rather than predatory aggression per se. It is a schooling fish that benefits from conspecific company; Seriously Fish recommends a minimum group of six or more. Water chemistry should reflect its native Indochinese conditions: around neutral pH (6.0–7.0), moderate hardness, and temperatures of 68–77 °F with good flow. A diet centred on meaty live and frozen foods suits its wild foraging ecology.

The Mekong is one of the world's most heavily modified large rivers: mainstream dams, floodplain conversion, sand mining and seasonal flow disruption all degrade the medium-sized forested stream habitats on which large barbs such as H. wetmorei depend. Species associated with flowing forest streams are disproportionately vulnerable as riparian tree cover is lost and low-flow periods lengthen.
