Labeobarbus boulengeri was described in 2016 by Vreven, Musschoot, Snoeks and Schliewen as a new species within the genus Labeobarbus. The description resolved a nomenclatural tangle: the fish had long been associated with the combination Varicorhinus latirostris Boulenger, 1910, an Angolan name that became preoccupied, and the 2016 revision replaced it with the current valid name — Labeobarbus boulengeri — under the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), which is the authority for valid nomenclature.
The genus Labeobarbus encompasses the African large barbs and yellowfishes, a group spanning southern and central Africa whose members were historically distributed across the older genera Barbus, Varicorhinus and related assemblages. The ETYFish Project confirms that the specific epithet boulengeri honours George Albert Boulenger (1858–1937), a prolific ichthyologist based at the British Museum (Natural History) who described a great many African freshwater fishes from colonial-era collections, including specimens from Angola.
Morphology
GBIF records a maximum total length of 6.5 in for Labeobarbus boulengeri. Beyond this size datum, detailed morphometric data from the original 2016 description are not available in public web sources. As a Labeobarbus, the species is expected to share the general form of the African large barbs: a moderately deep, laterally compressed body, subterminal to inferior mouth with fleshy lips adapted for picking at benthic material, and a typical cyprinid fin arrangement with a prominent dorsal fin.
Specific colouration in life has not been documented in accessible literature. Field data on scale counts, lateral-line pore counts, and other diagnostic meristics are contained in the 2016 type description but were not recoverable from open sources at the time of writing.
Habitat
Labeobarbus boulengeri is recorded from the Cuanza River system in Angola and the lower Congo River drainage. Both are major western-draining river basins of central Africa. The Cuanza (also spelled Kwanza) flows westward through Angola to the Atlantic and encompasses highland and lowland stretches; the lower Congo is one of the world's largest rivers, characterised by fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water in its rapids sections and broader, slower reaches downstream.
GBIF classifies the species as tropical and benthopelagic — associated with the bottom or near-bottom zone of the water column in freshwater. For large African barbs in these systems, typical habitat includes rocky river beds, sandy margins and areas of moderate to strong current, often at a range of elevations. Precise temperature and chemistry data for this species are not recorded in the available sources; water conditions in the Cuanza and lower Congo systems range from warm lowland reaches to cooler upland tributaries.
Feeding
No specific feeding data for Labeobarbus boulengeri appear in the accessible literature. Members of the genus Labeobarbus are generally omnivorous to algae- and detritus-feeding, using their fleshy, subterminal mouths to scrape biofilm and algae from hard substrates, sift organic matter from sand, and occasionally consume small invertebrates and plant material. The benthopelagic habitat classification is consistent with a bottom-oriented foraging strategy.
In the aquarium, large African barbs of this type can be maintained on a varied diet of sinking pellets, vegetable matter, and occasional live or frozen invertebrates, though Labeobarbus boulengeri itself has not been documented in captive collections.
Mating
No spawning observations for Labeobarbus boulengeri have been published in accessible sources. Like all barbs, the species is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Large African river barbs of the Labeobarbus group typically engage in seasonal or migratory spawning runs timed to rising water levels and cooler, highly oxygenated conditions — a pattern documented for yellowfishes and related large barbs across the continent.
Courtship in large barbs typically involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female, the two moving together over gravel or coarse substrate and releasing eggs and milt together. No pair bond forms and no territory is held beyond the brief act of spawning.
Breeding
Labeobarbus boulengeri has not been bred in aquaria, nor are breeding accounts available in the accessible literature. By analogy with large-river African barbs of the same genus, the reproductive mode is almost certainly broadcast egg-scattering over gravel or rocky substrate, with no parental care of any kind — the eggs and larvae are left entirely to their own fate after fertilisation. Adults do not guard eggs, build nests, or exhibit mouthbrooding.
For large-river African barbs generally, successful captive breeding is rarely achieved; the species' scale, migratory tendencies, and requirements for highly oxygenated, fast-moving water make replication of natural conditions in an aquarium setting very difficult.
In the aquarium
Labeobarbus boulengeri is not recorded in the aquarium hobby and is unlikely to appear in the trade in the foreseeable future. Its restricted and poorly documented distribution in Angolan and lower Congolese river systems, combined with the logistical challenges of collecting and transporting a large African river barb, place it firmly outside the ornamental fish supply chain.
Were the species to become available, it would require a very large, well-filtered aquarium with powerful circulation to mimic the oxygenated river conditions of its native habitat. Water chemistry should reflect central African large rivers: broadly neutral to slightly alkaline pH, moderate hardness, and temperatures consistent with the species' range. It is entirely unsuitable for community aquaria given its ultimate size.
Conservation
No IUCN Red List assessment has been located for Labeobarbus boulengeri in publicly accessible sources; the species may not yet have been evaluated, or it may have been assessed as Data Deficient given how recently it was formally described (2016). Its known range spans two major Angolan river basins — the Cuanza system and the lower Congo — both of which face growing pressure from hydroelectric development, agricultural run-off, and water extraction as Angola's economy expands.
The Cuanza River in particular has seen significant hydroelectric infrastructure, and large migratory barbs in such systems are vulnerable to fragmentation of their river corridors. Until field surveys establish population size and ecology, the conservation status of Labeobarbus boulengeri must be regarded as unknown.
