Labeobarbus ensifer was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1910, based on material from the Lucala River and related tributaries of the Cuanza (also spelled Kwanza) drainage in Angola. The original description placed it within the broad genus Barbus, the traditional catch-all for large African and Eurasian barbs; it was later transferred to Labeobarbus, the genus now recognised for the large African yellowfish and allied big barbs by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), which is the authority for current valid names.
The epithet ensifer is Latin for 'sword-bearing' — ensis (sword) and ifer (to carry) — a reference to the strong, bony, straight final simple ray of the dorsal fin that is characteristic of this fish. The parenthetical authority, (Boulenger, 1910), reflects the subsequent genus transfer. No subspecies are currently recognised.
Morphology
Labeobarbus ensifer is a moderately large barb, recorded to a maximum of 7.5 in in total length. Like other members of the genus it is a streamlined, somewhat cylindrical fish with a subterminal mouth suited to bottom-feeding and a prominent final simple ray in the dorsal fin — the 'sword' that gives the species its name — which is ossified, stiff and unbranched.
Beyond the diagnostic dorsal ray, the general body plan follows the Labeobarbus pattern: relatively large scales, a forked tail, and a benthic to mid-water posture consistent with a fish that forages over substrate. Detailed meristic data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature; body colouration in life is not well documented, but related Cuanza barbs are typically silvery to olive-brown with darker dorsal surfaces.
Habitat
Labeobarbus ensifer is endemic to the Cuanza (Kwanza) River basin in Angola, one of the major westward-draining rivers of central Africa. The Cuanza rises on the Bié Plateau in the Angolan highlands and flows roughly 597 mi to the Atlantic, passing through a range of habitats from cool upland reaches to warmer lowland channels. The species has been recorded from the Lucala River, a major Cuanza tributary, and related parts of the system.
FishBase classifies L. ensifer as a benthopelagic freshwater species. Angola's inland freshwater ichthyofauna is shaped by a mix of Congo-system affinities in the north and distinct endemic radiations in the Cuanza and Cunene drainages; the Cuanza in particular harbours an extraordinary diversity of Labeobarbus. Water conditions across the Cuanza range from cooler, well-oxygenated highland reaches to warmer lowland stretches, and the species is likely associated with open channels and riverine margins over firm substrate.

Mating
Labeobarbus ensifer, like all barbs, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. There is no nest, no bubble nest, no mouthbrooding and no pair bond persisting beyond the spawning act. Courtship involves an active male driving a gravid female through the water column or over the substrate, the two pressing together briefly as eggs and milt are simultaneously released.
In large river barbs such as those in the Cuanza basin, spawning is typically seasonal and may be timed to river flood conditions or temperature and photoperiod cues. Adults form no territory and provide no post-spawning care; eggs are released into the current or settle among stones and vegetation and are abandoned immediately.
Breeding
Breeding details for Labeobarbus ensifer in captivity are not documented in the accessible literature, and the species is not an established aquarium fish. In the wild it follows the standard Labeobarbus reproductive strategy: broadcast spawning over gravel or among submerged vegetation, with adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs that receive no parental attention and are subject to predation by adults and other fishes.
FishBase notes a high resilience category for L. ensifer, with a minimum population doubling time estimated at less than 15 months — consistent with a productive, seasonally fecund river barb. The lack of commercial aquarium or fisheries interest means captive breeding protocols have not been developed.

The species is endemic to the Cuanza River basin in Angola — a range that, while geographically restricted to a single drainage, encompasses a large and relatively intact river system.
Angola's freshwater fish fauna suffered limited scientific documentation during the country's prolonged period of civil conflict (1975–2002), and survey coverage of the Cuanza ichthyofauna has been improving since. The Springer 2019 volume on freshwater fishes of Angola highlighted the Cuanza as a centre of Labeobarbus diversity and endemism. Principal threats to the basin's fish fauna are broadly the same as those affecting large African rivers: dam construction, water extraction for agriculture, and increasing human population pressure on riparian habitats.
