Taxonomy & naming
Labeobarbus habereri was originally described as Barbus habereri by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1912. The epithet honours the collector of the type specimen from Cameroon, a common practice in the descriptive ichthyology of the period. The species was long carried under the broad, paraphyletic genus Barbus, which served as a catch-all for cyprinid barbels across Africa, Europe and Asia.
Genus-level revisions of the Barbus complex transferred the larger African species with a robust body plan and reduced lateral-line scale counts to Labeobarbus, a genus originally proposed for African yellowfish and allied forms. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Labeobarbus habereri (Steindachner, 1912), with the parenthetical authority marking the transfer out of Steindachner's original genus. It should not be confused with the Asian mahseers (Tor) or South Asian large barbs, which share the common grouping but belong to distinct lineages.
Morphology
Labeobarbus habereri is a moderately sized barb, with FishBase recording a maximum total length of 6.5 in for males and unsexed individuals. The body form is typical of the Labeobarbus group: elongate, moderately compressed, and built for life near the bottom and in open water of rivers. The mouth is subinferior — positioned slightly below the snout tip — an adaptation suited to picking food from the substrate surface. A single pair of barbels, approximately as long as the eye diameter, projects from the corners of the mouth.
The trophic level of 3.2 reported by FishBase places the species in the lower-middle range of the food web, consistent with feeding on benthic invertebrates and organic material. Detailed coloration data are sparse in the available literature, a reflection of the species' limited coverage in the aquarium hobby and the paucity of photographic records in scientific sources.
Habitat
Labeobarbus habereri is endemic to Cameroon, where it occupies multiple drainage systems: the Sanaga River basin, the Kelle River (a tributary of the Nyong), and the Dja River, which belongs to the middle Congo basin. This distribution across the Atlantic-draining Sanaga and Nyong systems as well as the Congo basin suggests tolerance of varying river conditions across the forest zone of Central Africa.
FishBase categorises the species as benthopelagic — associated with the bottom and lower water column of freshwater rivers. It inhabits the tropical freshwater zone, where rivers run through lowland and mid-elevation equatorial forest. Specific substrate preferences and microhabitat data are not well documented, but the subinferior mouth and moderate body size are consistent with occupation of slow to moderate current areas where organic material accumulates.
Feeding
With a trophic level of 3.2, Labeobarbus habereri feeds as an opportunistic mid-level consumer, taking food from the substrate and the lower water column. The subinferior mouth position is an adaptation for bottom-oriented feeding, and the species likely forages on benthic invertebrates, organic detritus, algal films, and small food items dislodged from the substrate by current.
No detailed stomach-content studies are documented in the sources available for this species. The broad diet implied by the trophic level is consistent with other members of the Labeobarbus group, which tend to be generalist feeders exploiting seasonally variable food resources in African river systems.
Mating
Like all barbs, Labeobarbus habereri is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No pair bond is formed and no territory is defended beyond transient courtship activity. In large African river barbs, spawning is typically seasonal and may be tied to rainfall and river-level cycles that concentrate fish and provide suitable substrate for egg deposition.
Courtship involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female, with the pair releasing eggs and milt over gravel, rock, or the substrate as they press together briefly. There is no nest construction and no aggregation behaviour associated with brood protection. The scattered eggs receive no attention from either parent after fertilisation.
Breeding
Labeobarbus habereri has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions in the available sources. Large African barbs of the Labeobarbus group are generally seasonal broadcast spawners, with spawning migrations over gravel beds in rivers timed to rising water levels or temperature changes associated with wet and dry seasons. Eggs are adhesive or semi-adhesive and settle into the substrate or among rocks after scattering.
Parental care is absent entirely: adults give no attention to eggs or larvae after spawning. In the wild, the timing of reproduction is likely governed by the hydrology of the Sanaga and Congo basin rivers, with peak spawning coinciding with the onset of the rains. Fecundity data for this species are not documented in the literature available.
In the aquarium
Labeobarbus habereri is not established in the aquarium hobby and is effectively unknown in the trade. Its maximum recorded size of around 6.5 in, combined with its origins in large West and Central African river systems, would make it a candidate for a spacious, well-filtered aquarium rather than a community tank. The subinferior mouth and benthopelagic lifestyle suggest it would benefit from open substrate areas and moderate to low current.
Given the absence of aquarium literature on this species, husbandry guidance is limited to what can be inferred from its biology and from the care of related large African barbs. A neutral to slightly alkaline pH, tropical temperatures consistent with Cameroonian lowland rivers, and a varied diet of sinking foods including live and frozen invertebrates would be a reasonable starting point. Data on compatibility, captive breeding, and trade availability are sparse.
Conservation
Labeobarbus habereri is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment conducted in 2022 under IUCN taxon ID 182790. The species is confirmed as endemic to Cameroon, and its presence across multiple drainage systems — the Sanaga, Nyong, and Dja — provides some distributional buffer against localised threats.
Cameroon's freshwater ecosystems face increasing pressure from deforestation, agricultural encroachment on river margins, and large infrastructure projects including hydroelectric dams on the Sanaga basin. The Congo basin tributaries, including the Dja, are somewhat better protected through adjacent forest reserves, but long-term monitoring of small endemic cyprinids like L. habereri remains limited. The species has no commercial value in the aquarium or food fish trade, reducing direct exploitation pressure but also limiting the incentive for targeted conservation research.
