Taxonomy & naming
Mastacembelus sanagali was described by the Belgian ichthyologist Dirk Frans Ernest Thys van den Audenaerde in 1972, with the type locality in the Sanaga River basin, Cameroon. The species epithet sanagali refers directly to that river, an honorific geographic name for the basin in which the type specimen was collected.
African spiny eels were historically divided among several genera — Aethiomastacembelus, Caecomastacembelus, and Afromastacembelus among them — and M. sanagali appeared in the older literature under at least two of those combinations (Aethiomastacembelus sanagali and Caecomastacembelus sanagali). A 2005 revision of Mastacembelidae subfamily and generic divisions synonymised all those African segregates back into Mastacembelus, the type genus, and the species is now placed there following the Catalog of Fishes.
The family Mastacembelidae sits within the order Synbranchiformes — not Anguilliformes. The resemblance to a true eel is convergent: the elongate, scaleless body and burrowing habits evolved independently from those of the Anguillidae. Mastacembelus is the most species-rich spiny-eel genus, spanning both tropical Africa and Asia, and its African members include a well-studied Lake Tanganyika species flock alongside widespread river forms such as this one.
Morphology
Mastacembelus sanagali is a moderately sized spiny eel, recorded to 9.5 in standard length. The body is greatly elongate, rounded anteriorly and laterally compressed toward the tapering tail. Like all mastacembelids the fish appears scaleless — the scales are tiny, embedded in a thick mucus coat — and the skin is therefore delicate and sensitive to abrasion and chemical irritants. The snout terminates in a soft, probing rostral appendage with tubular nostrils, a characteristic feature of the genus used to investigate the substrate for prey.
A count of 24–26 isolated dorsal spines precedes a long, continuous soft dorsal fin that merges with the caudal and anal around the tail tip, giving the fish its ribbon-like silhouette. Coloration and any distinctive patterning for this species are not well documented in the available literature; data on markings beyond the typical cryptic brownish tones of many African river spiny eels are sparse.
External sexual dimorphism is not documented for this species. In congeners, ripe females may appear somewhat fuller in the body than males of comparable length, but reliable sexing criteria for M. sanagali are unknown.
Habitat
Mastacembelus sanagali is endemic to the Sanaga River basin in Cameroon, one of the major river systems of Central Africa draining south-western Cameroon to the Atlantic. Like most African river-dwelling Mastacembelus, it is a benthic freshwater fish — benthopelagic in FishBase terminology — associated with warm, lowland river habitat where it lives close to or on the bottom.
Specific habitat data for M. sanagali are sparse, but West and Central African congeners in similar lowland river systems typically occupy soft sandy or muddy substrates, submerged roots, leaf litter, and shallow margins where they can burrow and find shelter by day. Water temperatures across the Sanaga basin in the tropical lowlands generally run in the range of 75–82 °F, with pH broadly neutral to slightly acidic (6.5–7.5), consistent with the soft, organic-rich water of forested Central African rivers.
Being scaleless, spiny eels of this type are poorly buffered against water-quality fluctuations and are sensitive to dissolved copper at any concentration — a consideration that extends to any aquarium context.
Feeding
Mastacembelus sanagali is presumed to be a nocturnal benthic carnivore, consistent with its family and with the morphology of its probing snout and down-turned mouth. In congeners inhabiting similar African river habitats the diet centres on benthic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and similar prey probed from the substrate and leaf litter — supplemented opportunistically by small fish and organic detritus.
Direct dietary data for this species are not available in the published literature. Given the uniformity of foraging strategy across Mastacembelus and the convergence of body plan toward the same substrate-hunting lifestyle, it is reasonable to infer a comparable diet, but specific gut-content studies have not been reported.
Mating
Mastacembelus sanagali is a spiny eel and, as such, is an egg-scattering freshwater spawner — not a catadromous true eel. It does not undertake a marine migration to breed. In the broader genus, courtship involves a male and female entwining and moving together among vegetation or root tangles before scattering adhesive eggs over the substrate; no nest is built, and no pair bond is maintained beyond the spawning act.
Seasonal cues, particularly rising water levels and warming temperatures associated with rainfall and river floods, are thought to trigger spawning in African riverine Mastacembelus. No breeding observations specific to M. sanagali have been published, and the species has not been bred in captivity to the knowledge available in the cache.
Breeding
Spiny eels of the genus Mastacembelus are substrate egg-scatterers: a courting pair scatter small, adhesive eggs among fine plants, submerged roots or leaf litter in fresh water, after which both adults depart and give no parental care whatsoever. The eggs and larvae are left to develop unattended. This is very different from the bubble-nest and larval-guarding behaviour of the swamp eels (Synbranchidae, e.g. Monopterus), and completely different from the semelparous ocean-spawning life history of the true eels (Anguillidae).
Mastacembelus sanagali has not been bred in the home aquarium and, given its narrow range, obscurity in the trade, and the general rarity of captive spiny-eel spawnings outside large specialist set-ups, it is unlikely to be bred by hobbyists in the near future. Any successful spawning would follow the pattern documented in other African and Asian Mastacembelus — soft, warm water, a large mature tank, and a seasonal cool-water change to simulate the onset of the rains — but data specific to this species are absent.
In the aquarium
Mastacembelus sanagali is not an established aquarium fish, and specimens are unlikely to be encountered in the regular trade given its narrow endemic range in Cameroon. Should it be obtained, husbandry would follow the principles common to African river spiny eels: a well-established aquarium with a deep, soft sand substrate the fish can burrow into, abundant shelter in the form of caves, pipes, and leaf litter, and stable, warm, neutral water quality. Scaleless mastacembelids are sensitive to copper-based medications — a near-universal rule for the family — and require careful treatment with any pharmaceutical.
Spiny eels are accomplished escape artists. Their ability to squeeze through the smallest gaps and to climb surfaces means a fully sealed lid with no open holes is mandatory; fish found on the floor often survive if returned to water promptly, but the risk is real. Evening feeding of meaty foods — bloodworm, small earthworms, chopped invertebrates — is appropriate for a species that is naturally nocturnal and substrate-oriented. Given its small adult size of around 9.5 in SL, M. sanagali would not require the large aquarium footprint demanded by the big Asian spiny eels, but data on its specific social behaviour and tankmate compatibility are not available.
The fish's scarcity in the hobby means that provenance should be considered: any wild specimen would come from a restricted population, and collection pressure on narrow-range endemics of this type deserves attention.
Conservation
Mastacembelus sanagali is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, most recently under the 2020.2 assessment. While its range is narrow — restricted to a single river basin, the Sanaga in Cameroon — the population appears stable within suitable habitat and there is no documented evidence of a range-wide decline at the time of assessment.
Narrow endemism is nonetheless a risk multiplier. A species confined to one river basin is inherently vulnerable to localised threats such as water extraction, damming, sedimentation from agriculture and logging, and chemical pollution. The Sanaga basin drains a region undergoing land-use change, and any significant degradation of the river's lowland reaches could affect this species disproportionately. Because M. sanagali is not a trade fish of note, collection pressure is not the primary concern, but monitoring of its population status would be prudent given the compounding pressures on Central African freshwater systems.
