Taxonomy & naming
Labeobarbus longissimus was described by Nagelkerke and Sibbing in 1997 as part of a landmark revision of the Lake Tana barb flock, the same paper that brought formal scientific recognition to the majority of the lake's endemic Labeobarbus species. The original combination was Barbus longissimus, and the species circulated under that name and briefly under the catch-all genus Barbus before being transferred to Labeobarbus as the African large-barb genus was better delimited from the Asian Puntius-complex barbs.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the current valid combination as Labeobarbus longissimus (Nagelkerke & Sibbing, 1997), with the parenthetical authority indicating the transfer out of the genus in which it was originally described. No subspecies or synonyms are currently listed. The species belongs to the Lake Tana radiative flock — a textbook example of lacustrine adaptive radiation in an African highland lake — alongside such relatives as the detritivorous L. megastoma and the insectivorous L. brevicephalus.
Morphology
As its epithet signals, Labeobarbus longissimus is the most elongated member of the Lake Tana flock. The body is notably slender and fusiform compared with the deeper-bodied detritivores and algivores that share the lake, an adaptation consistent with an active, pursuit-based piscivorous lifestyle. FishBase records a maximum fork length of 21.5 in, making it one of the larger members of the flock.
The head is moderately long with a well-developed jaw suited to engulfing prey fish. Coloration in the wild has not been documented in detail in the available literature, but large Labeobarbus of the Ethiopian highlands are typically silvery to brassy on the flanks with darker dorsal pigmentation. The slender build immediately distinguishes live longissimus from the stockier detritivores and algivores within the radiation.
Habitat
Labeobarbus longissimus is endemic to Lake Tana in the Amhara region of northwestern Ethiopia, at an elevation of approximately 1,2585 ft above sea level. Lake Tana is the source of the Blue Nile and is the largest lake in Ethiopia. Within the lake the species occurs over rocky substrates in relatively shallow water, typically at depths of less than 20 ft, according to FishBase habitat data.
The Ethiopian highlands produce a cool, clear, moderately hard alkaline environment. Lake Tana has a surface temperature range broadly between about 64 °F and 77 °F across the seasons, with well-oxygenated inshore waters over the rocky littoral zone where longissimus is found. Its preference for rocky shallows likely reflects both its hunting strategy — pursuing smaller fish over structured substrate — and the availability of shelter.
Feeding
Labeobarbus longissimus is an obligate piscivore. Gut-content analysis of 74 individuals documented by Nagelkerke and Sibbing (1997, via ResearchGate publication 40140067) found a diet consisting of almost 100% fish — an exceptional dietary specialisation within the Lake Tana flock, where most congeners exploit plant material, detritus, invertebrates, or plankton. The primary prey are almost certainly smaller members of the lake's own cyprinid community, including juvenile conspecifics and the smaller Labeobarbus species.
This trophic position as the apex piscivore of the radiation is reflected in the elongated body form: longissimus is built for speed and manoeuvrability in open-water pursuit over rocky ground rather than for the sustained bottom-grubbing of detritivores or the slow browsing of algivores.
Mating
Detailed reproductive observations for Labeobarbus longissimus specifically are not available in the published literature captured in the research cache. No mass spawning migrations have been reported for this species, in contrast to some Lake Tana Labeobarbus that undertake upstream runs into inflowing rivers during the rainy season. It is assumed, consistent with the biology of the broader genus, to be an egg-scattering spawner without parental care.
Courtship in large river and lake barbs of this genus typically involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female, with eggs and milt released together over suitable substrate — gravel or rocky shallows — and no subsequent guarding. The rocky littoral habitat occupied by longissimus would provide spawning substrate, but seasonal movements and precise spawning sites have not been documented for this species.
Breeding
As an egg-scattering cyprinid, Labeobarbus longissimus releases adhesive eggs over rocky or gravelly substrate with no nest construction and no parental care. Adults do not guard eggs or fry, and in a species this large and piscivorous, any eggs or small fry encountered in open water would likely be consumed by conspecifics or other members of the flock. Fecundity data specific to longissimus are not available in the current literature.
Labeobarbus longissimus has not been established in the aquarium hobby and there are no captive-breeding records in the accessible literature. The species' large adult size, specialised piscivorous diet, and endemism to a single highland lake make it a poor candidate for the ornamental trade, and any captive maintenance would be for research or conservation purposes only.

Labeobarbus longissimus is not a hobbyist fish and is not available in the ornamental trade. Its endemic status in Lake Tana, large adult size (potentially exceeding 19.5 in fork length), and obligate piscivorous diet make it entirely unsuitable as an aquarium species under normal circumstances. No husbandry information exists in the hobby literature.
Any aquarium maintenance of this species would be conducted only within a research or ex situ conservation programme, requiring large, well-oxygenated systems with cool water reflecting highland Ethiopian conditions, live fish as dietary staples, and specialist expertise. For aquarists interested in large African barbs, the genus Labeobarbus contains members more tractable in captivity, but longissimus itself is purely a fish of Lake Tana.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Labeobarbus longissimus as Data Deficient, reflecting genuine uncertainty about the species' population size, trend, and threats rather than an assumption of security. Lake Tana and its endemic Labeobarbus flock face significant and growing pressures: agricultural runoff and soil erosion in the lake's catchment have increased sedimentation and turbidity in inshore waters; fishing pressure on the lake has intensified as human populations in the surrounding highlands have grown; and the introduction of exotic species poses an additional risk to an already fragile endemic assemblage.
As the apex piscivore of the flock, longissimus is particularly sensitive to cascading changes in prey fish abundance, and its specialised habitat in rocky shallows makes it vulnerable to siltation of those littoral areas. The Data Deficient rating underscores the urgent need for systematic population surveys to determine whether the species' status should be elevated on the Red List. Lake Tana is recognised as a site of global freshwater biodiversity significance, and conservation of its unique Labeobarbus radiation depends on integrated watershed management and controlled exploitation of the lake's fisheries.
