Labeobarbus platyrhinus is a large East African cyprinid described by George Albert Boulenger in 1900, belonging to the subfamily Torinae alongside Africa's other big barbs. Known from the highland freshwater systems of East Africa, this broad-snouted fish — its epithet platyrhin referring literally to its flattened, wide snout — is one of many Labeobarbus species associated with the Lake Tana drainage in Ethiopia, a region exceptional for the diversity and endemism of its large-barb fauna. Originally placed in the old catch-all genus Barbus, it has since been re-evaluated and stands today under the current generic placement recognised by the Catalog of Fishes.

Taxonomy & naming

Labeobarbus platyrhinus was originally described by George Albert Boulenger in 1900 under the name Barbus platyrhinus. Boulenger described a large number of African cyprinids in this period, and for much of the twentieth century the species was carried under the broad genus Barbus, which served as a repository for cyprinids across Africa, Eurasia and parts of Asia. Subsequent systematic revision recognised that the old Barbus was polyphyletic, and the African large-barb lineage — including the Lake Tana complex — is now assigned to Labeobarbus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the current valid combination as Labeobarbus platyrhinus (Boulenger, 1900), with the parenthetical authority marking the move from the original genus.

FishBase assigns this species ID 11446 and places it in the family Cyprinidae, subfamily Torinae — the large-barb clade that includes the Asian mahseers as well as the African yellowfish and lake-barb radiations. The Lake Tana system in the Ethiopian highlands is a hotspot for Labeobarbus endemism; allied species from the same drainage include L. platydorsus, L. dainellii and L. gorguari, several of which have become piscivorous specialists unusually large even among large barbs.

Habitat

Large Labeobarbus of the Lake Tana drainage display a spectrum of feeding strategies unusual even within the cyprinids, ranging from herbivory and detritivory through insectivory to full piscivory in some species. Labeobarbus platyrhinus is not an aquarium species in the conventional sense. Large African barbs from high-altitude East African lakes require cool, well-oxygenated water and grow to sizes incompatible with domestic aquaria. There are no accounts of this species in the ornamental trade, nor records of successful maintenance in hobbyist tanks.

For those with public-aquarium facilities, the Lake Tana barb radiation represents a biologically remarkable group — a textbook example of adaptive radiation within a single lake system — but the practical requirements of cool highland water temperatures, large tank volumes and specialised diets place them outside the reach of typical aquarium keeping. Knowledge of this species comes from ichthyological field surveys rather than from aquarist experience.

Conservation

No formal IUCN Red List assessment has been located for Labeobarbus platyrhinus specifically. The Lake Tana watershed, while protected in part, faces pressures from agricultural runoff, sedimentation from deforestation on the Ethiopian highlands, wetland drainage, and the expansion of water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) across substantial portions of the lake surface. Several Labeobarbus endemics of Lake Tana are known to have undergone population declines, and the broader genus across East and southern Africa includes species assessed as Vulnerable or Endangered where river fragmentation, dam construction and water extraction have reduced connectivity between spawning and feeding habitats.
