Neolissochilus compressus was described by Francis Day in 1870. The genus Neolissochilus was erected to hold a cluster of large cyprinids from South and Southeast Asia that had previously been scattered across the broad mahseer genus Tor and allied groupings. These are robust, fast-water barbs of hill rivers — the 'big barbs' — sharing a body plan and ecological niche with the true mahseers (Tor spp.) but distinguished by morphological characters including scale counts and fin-ray formula.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats the current valid combination as Neolissochilus compressus (Day, 1870), the parenthetical authority convention indicating that Day's original genus placement has been revised. Older literature may carry the species under Barbus or Tor. The species epithet compressus is Latin for 'compressed' or 'squeezed together', referencing the notably compressed (flattened laterally) head shape that distinguishes this species within the genus.
Neolissochilus is a moderately large genus with its centre of diversity in the hill rivers of the Indo-Burmese region, extending into Sundaland. N. compressus is regarded as a Myanmar endemic, and its relationships within the genus have not been subject to a modern molecular phylogenetic study; the taxonomy should be treated as provisional pending such work.
