Taxonomy & naming
Poropuntius cogginii was described by the American ichthyologist Tyson R. Roberts in 1998 in his review of the tropical Asian cyprinid genus Poropuntius, published in the Natural History Bulletin of the Siam Society. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records Roberts, 1998 as the authority for this species, and the valid combination is Poropuntius cogginii Roberts, 1998.
The genus Poropuntius is a clade of medium to large Asian barbs placed within the family Cyprinidae. It is not part of the large Puntius sensu lato assemblage that was reorganised by Pethiyagoda and colleagues in 2012; Poropuntius has a longer revisionary history focused on Indo-Chinese and Yunnan taxa. The species epithet cogginii honours a person commemorated by Roberts in the original description, following the convention of Latinising a personal name with the genitive suffix -ii.
No junior synonyms are recorded for this species in the major databases, and no alternative common name has entered broad use. The name Poropuntius daliensis is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The name Poropuntius susanae is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Poropuntius cogginii is a moderately large barb reaching a maximum recorded standard length of 8.5 in, with a common length around 5.5 in. The body form is typical of the genus: elongate, moderately compressed, and suited to a benthopelagic lifestyle in open lacustrine waters rather than fast-running stream habitats.
Diagnostic features noted by Roberts include well-developed barbels and a caudal fin bearing prominent submarginal stripes on both lobes — markings that distinguish it from other Poropuntius congeners. The fins are described as relatively small in proportion to body size. Detailed meristic counts and a full description of colouration are given in Roberts (1998).
Sexual dimorphism has not been documented in detail in the literature; like many large riverine and lacustrine barbs, gravid females are likely to be more rotund than males, but specific published data for this species are sparse.
Habitat
This species is known only from Lake Erhai (also called Lake Dali), a rift-valley lake on the Yunnan Plateau in Yunnan Province, southwestern China. Lake Erhai is the second-largest freshwater lake on the Yunnan Plateau, situated at an elevation of roughly 1,3182 ft above sea level, and it supports a fish community that includes several other endemic cyprinids.
A study of the Lake Erhai fish community by Tang and colleagues (2013) found that the distribution of fishes in the lake is influenced by aquatic plant beds, water temperature, pH, and season. The lake's chemistry is broadly neutral, with a pH close to 7. As a high-altitude plateau lake, water temperatures are cooler than tropical lowland equivalents, with seasonal variation across the year.
Poropuntius cogginii is recorded as benthopelagic, inhabiting deeper open-water and bottom zones of the lake rather than purely shallow littoral margins. The species has no known populations outside Lake Erhai.
Feeding
Detailed dietary studies specific to Poropuntius cogginii have not been published in the accessible literature. Based on the biology of other Poropuntius species — medium to large cyprinids foraging in lacustrine and riverine environments — the diet is expected to include benthic invertebrates, algae, detritus, and small organic matter gathered from the substrate and water column.
The benthopelagic habit and relatively small fin size are consistent with a fish that forages methodically across the lake bed rather than chasing fast-moving prey. Data for this species remain sparse, and further dietary characterisation would require dedicated field sampling.
Mating
No specific courtship observations have been published for Poropuntius cogginii. Like other barbs in the family Cyprinidae, the species is presumed to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner with no parental care. Barbs do not build nests, brood in the mouth, or guard eggs or fry; spawning typically involves a male driving a gravid female through vegetation or over suitable substrate while eggs and milt are released together.
In large lacustrine barbs and related mahseer relatives, seasonal spawning migrations to specific areas of the lake or inflowing streams are common, triggered by changes in water temperature, photoperiod, and water level. Whether P. cogginii undertakes such movements within Lake Erhai is unrecorded, but would be consistent with the natural history of similarly sized plateau lake cyprinids.
Breeding
Poropuntius cogginii has not been bred in captivity, and no reproductive data — fecundity, egg size, development time, or season — have been published. Given its Critically Endangered status and extreme endemism to a single degraded lake, ex situ breeding trials would be of considerable conservation value if suitable broodstock could be obtained.
As an egg-scattering barb, it would deposit adhesive eggs over substrate or vegetation with no subsequent parental care. Adults of many large cyprinids are known to consume their own eggs. The broader Poropuntius genus includes both riverine and lacustrine species, and in-lake breeding over gravel shoals or plant beds during seasonal temperature peaks is the most probable reproductive strategy for this high-altitude endemic.
In the aquarium
Poropuntius cogginii does not appear in the aquarium trade and is not practically available to hobbyists. Its Critically Endangered status and restriction to a single high-altitude Chinese lake make wild collection inadvisable and culturally prohibited under Chinese fisheries regulations for protected species.
Were it to be kept, the cool high-altitude origin of Lake Erhai would require significantly lower temperatures than typical tropical aquarium setups — more akin to conditions suited to temperate cyprinids than standard tropical barbs. The species' size (up to 8.5 in SL) would also demand a large aquarium. For the foreseeable future, P. cogginii is a species of scientific and conservation interest rather than a practical aquarium subject.
Conservation
Poropuntius cogginii is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 1 November 2022. It is endemic to Lake Erhai alone, and the lake has experienced severe ecological degradation over recent decades. A study by Tang and colleagues (2013) documenting the Lake Erhai fish community found that multiple endemic species had been extirpated from the lake, driven primarily by the introduction of invasive species, agricultural run-off causing eutrophication, and broader catchment modification.
Lake Erhai is an important water source for the surrounding Dali region and has been subject to large-scale water-quality management interventions, though the endemic fish fauna has continued to decline. The combination of an extremely restricted range confined to a single waterbody, documented co-endemic extinctions, and ongoing habitat pressure places P. cogginii among the more precarious freshwater fish of Yunnan.
No targeted recovery programme specifically for P. cogginii is recorded in the open literature. Conservation of the species is inseparable from the broader restoration of Lake Erhai's native fish community and the control of invasive species.
