Taxonomy & naming
Poropuntius angustus was described by Maurice Kottelat in 2000 in the paper "Diagnosis of a new genus and 64 new species of fishes from Laos" (Journal of South Asian Natural History 5(1):37–82), which catalogued a large swathe of undescribed Lao freshwater diversity in a single contribution. The species was placed directly in Poropuntius at its original description, so there is no earlier combination under Puntius or Barbus for this particular species.
Poropuntius is a genus of medium-sized Asian barbs belonging to family Cyprinidae, subfamily Cyprininae. The genus name combines the Greek poros (pore, a reference to the characteristic sensory pores of the lateral line region) with Puntius, the historically expansive barb genus. Within the genus, the taxonomy of Poropuntius as a whole was noted in the IUCN assessment (2011) as still confused, and boundary questions between species remain unresolved pending more comprehensive revision. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid name Poropuntius angustus Kottelat, 2000.
Morphology
The most diagnostic feature of Poropuntius angustus is its unusually elongated, shallow body: body depth measures only 25.3–28.8 % of standard length, giving the fish a distinctly slender, almost cylindrical profile compared with the deeper-bodied barbs that share its drainage. It reaches a maximum recorded length of 4.5 in SL.
Coloration as described from preserved and live material shows a caudal fin marked by brown stripes along both the upper and lower margins, with the remainder of the fin dusky to pale yellow. Beyond these fin characters, detailed meristic and pigmentation data are sparse in the available literature, which is consistent with the species' status as a rarely collected and little-studied endemic.
Habitat
Poropuntius angustus inhabits small forest streams in northern Laos, where it is found in shallow water over substrates typical of Mekong headwater tributaries — sand, gravel, and leaf litter shaded by intact riparian and montane forest. Its range encompasses the Nam Ou, Nam Tha, and Nam Youan basins, all draining into the upper Mekong system within Lao PDR.
The forest-stream microhabitat implies clean, well-oxygenated, cool-to-warm tropical water with low to moderate hardness, likely soft and near-neutral to slightly acidic conditions consistent with the geology and soils of the northern Lao highlands. No precise field measurements of temperature, pH, or hardness have been published for the collection sites.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Poropuntius angustus has been published. As a medium-sized cyprinid barb of forested headwater streams, it is likely an opportunistic omnivore in the mould of most stream-dwelling barbs, picking invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans, worms — from the substrate and water column, along with algae, diatoms, and organic detritus.
Data are too sparse to characterise feeding behaviour with confidence beyond the general pattern expected for the group. In the aquarium, similar small barbs are fed high-quality flakes and pellets supplemented with live and frozen invertebrate foods.
Mating
Like all barbs, Poropuntius angustus is assumed to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No published observations of courtship or spawning behaviour exist for this species specifically, but the reproductive biology of Poropuntius and related genera follows the cyprinid pattern: a driving male pursues a gravid female through vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief, repeated presses.
No nest is constructed and no pair bond persists beyond the spawning event. Colour and activity are likely elevated in conditioned fish during the breeding season, as is typical for barbs of comparable size. Population seasonality in the Mekong basin is likely linked to monsoon hydrology, with rising water levels and increasing prey availability triggering spawning.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Poropuntius angustus appear in the hobby or scientific literature, and the species is not known in the aquarium trade. Based on the biology of closely related stream barbs, breeding would follow the standard egg-scatterer pattern: adhesive eggs deposited over plants, roots, or fine gravel substrate with no parental care whatsoever — adults will consume eggs and larvae given access.
Fecundity, incubation period, and larval development data are absent from the available literature. Any aquarist attempting to breed this species would likely apply the protocols used for similar-sized Mekong basin barbs: a separate, shallow spawning tank with fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop, soft and slightly acidic water, and removal of adults immediately after spawning.
In the aquarium
Poropuntius angustus is not established in the aquarium trade and is essentially unknown to hobbyists. It has not appeared in commercial imports from Laos in any quantity that has generated hobby literature, and no husbandry data beyond the basic biology of the group are available.
Should it ever become available, its slender body form, modest 4.5 in adult size, and presumed preference for clean, cool forest-stream water would suggest a spacious, well-filtered aquarium with good flow, minimal dissolved organics, and a diet of varied invertebrate and prepared foods. It would be best kept as a species with suitable shoalmates from the same drainage rather than in a generic community tank, given the scarcity of field data on its behaviour.
Conservation
Poropuntius angustus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List, evaluated in January 2011 and published in 2012, with Maurice Kottelat as the assessor. The Data Deficient rating reflects a genuine absence of population data rather than an assumption of security: the species is known only from a handful of localities in the Nam Ou to Nam Youan drainage of northern Lao PDR, and no information exists on population size, trend, or habitat condition across that range.
The IUCN assessment identifies anthropogenic river morphology modification, logging, and agricultural conversion as threats to the species' small-stream forest habitat. Northern Laos has experienced significant deforestation and land-use change in recent decades, and hydropower development on Mekong tributaries adds further pressure to stream connectivity and flow regimes. Given the restricted range and the ongoing transformation of Mekong headwater catchments, a formal population survey to underpin a revised threat assessment would be a research priority.
