Poropuntius burtoni is a medium-sized cyprinid barb endemic to the Chindwin and Irrawaddy river drainages of northeastern India (Manipur state) and Myanmar. Reaching up to 8 in in total length, it inhabits hill streams and foothill rivers of the Indo-Burmese region — a landscape of fast-flowing, clear waters draining the eastern Himalayan foothills. Described by Mukerji in 1933 and confirmed as a valid species by Vishwanath and Kosygin in 2001, it belongs to the genus Poropuntius, a group of larger Asian barbs distinguished from the smaller Puntius sensu stricto by morphological and meristic characters. The species is assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN, reflecting its presence across two major river systems, though it remains little studied in terms of ecology or aquarium husbandry.

Taxonomy & naming

Poropuntius burtoni was first described by Mukerji in 1933 (some sources record the authority year as 1934; the Catalog of Fishes at the California Academy of Sciences lists the valid name as Poropuntius burtoni (Mukerji 1934), Cyprinidae: Cyprininae). The species was for a period treated as synonymous with or confused alongside related Irrawaddy barbs, but a targeted taxonomic revision by Vishwanath and Kosygin (2001) in the Journal of the Bombay Natural History Society confirmed its species validity and clarified its distribution as an endemic of the Chindwin–Irrawaddy drainage.

The genus Poropuntius was established to hold a set of larger-bodied Asian barbs separated from the old, polyphyletic catch-all genus Puntius. Roberts (2001) reviewed tropical Asian Cyprinidae in Poropuntius and placed P. burtoni within the genus based on morphological characters including lateral line scale count (34–38) and fin-ray meristics (dorsal soft rays 12, anal soft rays 9). A closely related species, P. clavatus, occupies the adjacent Barak–Brahmaputra drainage to the west, illustrating how the Indo-Burmese hills have generated parallel cyprinid lineages in neighbouring basins separated by ridge watersheds.

Morphology

Poropuntius burtoni is a moderately large barb, reaching a maximum recorded total length of 8 in, which places it among the larger members of its genus. Body form follows the typical robust, moderately compressed cyprinid plan suited to life in running foothill waters — deeper-bodied than the slender mahseer relatives but not as deep-bellied as the ornamental dwarf barbs of lowland Sundaland.

Meristic data recorded in FishBase and the primary literature give dorsal soft rays 12 and anal soft rays 9, with lateral line scales numbering 34–38. The species is benthopelagic in habit, foraging near the bottom and in mid-water of streams and rivers. Detailed coloration notes for live or freshly preserved specimens are sparse in the available literature; the cache does not record a distinctive colour pattern, and specific data on sexual dimorphism remain undescribed in published accounts.

Habitat

The species inhabits hill streams and rivers at the foothills of the Chindwin and Irrawaddy drainages — a zone where clear, fast-running highland torrents transition into the broader, slightly warmer lowland river channels of northwestern Myanmar and Manipur state in northeastern India. These are typically well-oxygenated, moderately fast-flowing waters with rocky or gravelly substrates, draining the forested eastern Himalayan foothills and Patkai Range.

FishBase records the species as tropical and benthopelagic, consistent with a foothill stream dweller that feeds along and near the riverbed. The Chindwin–Irrawaddy system spans a broad latitudinal and altitudinal gradient; P. burtoni appears to be associated with the foothill reach rather than the cold high-altitude headwaters or the large, slower lowland main stems. Water temperatures in foothill Irrawaddy tributaries are typically warm in the lowlands and cool to moderate at elevation, and the chemistry reflects the geology of the watershed — generally moderate hardness and near-neutral pH, distinct from the soft, acidic blackwaters of Sundaland.

Feeding

No detailed dietary studies have been published for Poropuntius burtoni. As a benthopelagic barb in foothill streams and rivers, the species almost certainly feeds opportunistically on invertebrates — insect larvae, crustaceans, worms — along with algae, periphyton, and organic detritus picked from the substrate, following the broad omnivorous strategy shared across the larger riverine cyprinids of the Indo-Burmese region.

In the aquarium, comparable larger barbs from similar Irrawaddy-basin foothill habitats accept a varied diet of high-quality pellets, live and frozen invertebrates, and some plant matter. The species' size (up to 8 in) and likely active disposition suggest it would need a spacious aquarium and appropriately sized foods, though aquarium-specific diet data for this species are not available in the literature reviewed.

Mating

No published account of spawning behaviour exists for Poropuntius burtoni specifically. Like all barbs, it is expected to be an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner — the universal reproductive strategy in the Cyprinidae, with no nest construction, no pair bond, and no parental care of eggs or larvae.

In comparable larger riverine barbs of the Irrawaddy system, seasonal spawning migrations to upstream reaches are typical, triggered by the monsoon flood pulse and associated temperature and flow cues. Males pursue gravid females in the current, and spawning involves brief contact as eggs and milt are scattered over gravel or among submerged vegetation. There is no lasting territory or pair association after the spawning act.

Breeding

Poropuntius burtoni has not been reported in the aquarium hobby in any established way, and no captive breeding accounts are available. As an egg-scatterer producing non-guarded eggs, it follows the same general reproductive template as other cyprinids: adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs released over substrate or vegetation, with adults taking no further interest in eggs or larvae.

In the wild, spawning in large Irrawaddy-drainage barbs is likely linked to the monsoon season, with rising water levels and increasing food availability stimulating reproductive condition. Eggs hatch rapidly in warm water, and larvae depend on microorganisms and fine particulate organic matter before transitioning to larger invertebrate prey. Given the species' large adult size, any captive breeding attempt would require a correspondingly large aquarium and conditioning on live foods.

In the aquarium

Poropuntius burtoni is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade and is not kept or bred as a hobby fish in any documented way. Its relatively large adult size of up to 8 in and its origin in fast-flowing foothill streams make it a species better suited to a specialist or public aquarium setting than a typical home aquarium.

For those working with large Indo-Burmese riverine cyprinids, the species would require a spacious, well-oxygenated aquarium with good flow, a temperature reflecting its foothill habitat, and substrate appropriate for benthic foraging. Its rarity in trade means there is no established husbandry literature to draw on. The species' primary interest lies in its biogeographic position as a Chindwin–Irrawaddy endemic and in the taxonomic questions it poses regarding the radiation of larger barbs across the Indo-Burmese region.

Conservation

Poropuntius burtoni is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List (assessed 1 March 2007). The LC assessment reflects the species' presence across two major river systems — the Chindwin and the Irrawaddy — and no documented evidence of major population decline at the time of assessment. The Catalog of Fishes also records a Mali Hka River drainage population, broadening the known range within the greater Irrawaddy basin.

The foothill and montane watersheds of Manipur and upper Myanmar where P. burtoni occurs face ongoing pressures from agricultural expansion, sedimentation from deforestation, and infrastructure development in the region's river valleys. However, these pressures are diffuse and the drainage network is large. The species' aquarium trade footprint is negligible, so collection pressure is not a conservation concern. Future reassessment would benefit from systematic survey data on population abundance and range within the Chindwin drainage.
