Poropuntius deauratus, the yellow-tail brook barb, is a slender riverine cyprinid endemic to the coastal river drainages of central Vietnam, where it inhabits fast-flowing streams and small to medium rivers with clear, oxygen-rich water. Named for its distinctive yellow caudal fin edged in dark margins, it is one of the more striking barbs of the Indo-Chinese fauna — and one of the more imperilled, assessed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List in response to rapid population decline driven by dam construction, water pollution and overfishing. Known only from a narrow strip of coastal basins south of Hue, it represents a true endemic whose future is tightly bound to the health of a small number of unprotected river systems.

Taxonomy & naming

Poropuntius deauratus was originally described by Achille Valenciennes in 1842, with the type locality recorded as Hue, in what is now central Vietnam. The specific epithet deauratus is Latin for "gilded" or "covered in gold," a reference to the fish's golden-yellow coloration and, most conspicuously, its bright yellow caudal fin.

The genus Poropuntius was separated from the old catch-all Puntius (which was progressively dismantled following Pethiyagoda et al. 2012 and subsequent revisions) and currently accommodates a group of medium-bodied Southeast Asian brook barbs. A 2024 taxonomic revision of the genus (ScienceDirect) documented considerable intraspecific variation in shape and colour across P. deauratus populations — a finding that complicates distributional assessments and helps explain why specimens from Cambodia, Thailand and Laos were previously attributed to this species. More recent molecular and morphological work (Rufford Foundation–supported research, Vo Thi Bich Thao 2019–2020) confirmed that those extra-limital records represent misidentifications, most likely with the congener P. normani, and that P. deauratus is a genuine coastal-Vietnam endemic. The name Poropuntius smedleyi is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.

Morphology

Poropuntius deauratus reaches at least 6.5 in total length (FishBase), making it a medium-sized barb by regional standards. The body is moderately elongate and laterally compressed. The most diagnostic feature is the caudal fin, which is yellow with dark margins — the colour combination that earned the species both its common name and its epithet.

Sexual maturity is accompanied by the development of breeding tubercles, which appear on the lower posterior body of specimens 2.5 in SL and above. The species shows considerable colour and shape variation across its range, as noted in the 2024 Poropuntius revision, which may reflect local adaptation across the isolated coastal drainages it inhabits.

Habitat

In its native coastal river drainages of central Vietnam, P. deauratus occupies medium and small rivers and streams with rapid currents and clear water. Surveys describe a lotic environment that includes pools, runs and riffles — the diversity of flow regimes typical of upland and foothill watercourses draining coastal ranges. FishBase records a pH of approximately 7 and a temperature of around 54 °F for range data, suggesting the species tolerates or may even be adapted to cooler conditions in the higher-elevation reaches of its range.

The yellow-tail brook barb is confirmed strictly from coastal river systems south of Hue. The drainages involved are short, independent systems that descend the Truong Son (Annamite) range directly to the South China Sea. These rivers are hydrologically isolated from the major Mekong and Red River systems, which explains the species' endemism and its vulnerability to local-scale pressures.

Feeding

Specific dietary data for P. deauratus in the wild are sparse; FishBase records the diet as unknown. From its body plan — a moderately elongate barb suited to current — and by analogy with other Poropuntius of similar rivers, it is likely a benthopelagic omnivore that takes small invertebrates, aufwuchs, and organic detritus from the substrate and water column.

In the aquarium trade, where this species occasionally appears, it is fed standard staple foods. Any captive programme or conservation-oriented breeding effort would presumably condition fish on live and frozen invertebrate foods to mimic an insectivore-skewed wild diet.

Mating

Like all barbs, P. deauratus is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No nest is built and no parental bond is formed. Courtship involves a driving male pursuing a gravid female through the water column or over the substrate until eggs and milt are released together. The development of nuptial tubercles on the lower posterior body — documented at body lengths of 2.5 in SL and above — indicates these structures play a role in close-contact spawning behaviour typical of cyprinids.

No detailed field or aquarium observations of spawning behaviour are on record for this species. Given the riverine habitat of clear, fast water, spawning likely occurs over gravel or among coarse substrate in the riffled reaches of its native streams, in a pattern common among riverine barbs of the region.

Breeding

Published breeding accounts for P. deauratus are lacking. By analogy with related riverine barbs, eggs are adhesive and scattered over the substrate or among fine cover, with no parental care; adults pose a risk to their own eggs and any resulting fry if not separated. In an aquarium setting, well-conditioned fish can potentially be spawned in a tank with clear, well-oxygenated water, modest current, and a gravel or mesh base to protect eggs from the parents.

Given the species' Endangered status and restricted range, ex-situ breeding programmes at aquariums or conservation institutions would be of genuine value, though no formal programme is documented in the available literature.

In the aquarium

Poropuntius deauratus appears occasionally in the Vietnamese domestic market and infrequently in the international aquarium trade (Rufford Foundation project notes). Its striking yellow caudal fin with dark margins gives it genuine ornamental appeal, and its medium size and apparent tolerance of a range of conditions make it manageable in the right setting.

As a riverine species from clear, fast-moving water, it would benefit from strong filtration and good oxygenation. The relatively cool temperatures suggested by field data — FishBase reports approximately 54 °F for part of its range — may indicate it tolerates or even prefers cooler conditions than the typical tropical barb. Given its Endangered status, hobbyists who obtain specimens should treat captive propagation as a conservation priority and source fish from responsible, legally obtained stock rather than wild-caught individuals.

Conservation

Poropuntius deauratus is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List under criterion A2ac, reflecting a marked population decline of more than 50% between approximately 2000 and 2009. The assessment was published in 2010. The drivers of that decline are threefold: dam construction on the short coastal rivers it depends on, water pollution from agricultural and urban runoff, and overfishing — including collection for local food markets and, to a lesser extent, the aquarium trade.

The species is a strict endemic of coastal river drainages in central Vietnam, confirmed by Vo Thi Bich Thao's 2019–2020 molecular and distributional work to be absent from Cambodia, Thailand and Laos despite older records suggesting otherwise. That narrow endemism makes it acutely sensitive to events within a small geographic footprint. No formal protected areas are known to encompass its core habitat, and the coastal drainages south of Hue face ongoing pressure from infrastructure development and agricultural intensification. Further taxonomic clarification — the 2024 Poropuntius revision revealed substantial intraspecific variation — may ultimately define the conservation unit more precisely and inform targeted action.
