Taxonomy & naming
Poropuntius exiguus was described by Wu and Lin in 1977 from the type locality at Xizhou, on streams flowing into the northern end of Lake Dali (Er Hai), Yunnan, China. The genus Poropuntius was reviewed by Tyson Roberts in 1998, whose monograph remains the primary systematic treatment, placing exiguus within a group of mainland Asian species and diagnosing it on the basis of its proportionally smaller fins — particularly the caudal fin — and its early sexual maturity.
The genus Poropuntius belongs to the family Cyprinidae, within the broadly Southeast Asian and southern Chinese barb radiation. Like many Asian barbs historically grouped under the catch-all genera Barbus or Puntius, Poropuntius was separated out as part of the ongoing revision of Asian cyprinid systematics. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the current valid combination as Poropuntius exiguus Wu & Lin, 1977. No synonyms are recorded. No subspecies or locality variants are known.
Morphology
Poropuntius exiguus is a moderately slender barb reaching a maximum standard length of 4.5 in. The species is diagnosed within the genus by its proportionally small fins, particularly the caudal fin, relative to other Poropuntius. Larger specimens — those in the 2.5–3.5 in SL range — develop a nuchal hump, an elevated profile behind the head, which Roberts (1998) noted is not observed in other mainland Poropuntius and may be sexually or ontogenetically determined.
A further diagnostic feature is the species' capacity to reach sexual maturity at a remarkably small size, suggesting an r-selected life history unusual for a fish of its ultimate size. Coloration details are not well documented in the available literature, consistent with a species known from limited historic collections. The body plan is benthopelagic, adapted to feeding and moving in the mid-to-lower water column of a large, relatively clear lake and its tributary streams.
Habitat
Er Hai Lake (Lake Dali) is a high-altitude rift lake situated at approximately 1,3189 ft above sea level in the Cangshan-Erhai area of Yunnan, China. Hydrologically it drains into the Mekong river system, making Poropuntius exiguus part of the broader Mekong basin fauna. The species inhabited both the open lake and the streams flowing into it, particularly around the Xizhou area at the lake's northern end, which is the type locality.
As a subtropical high-altitude lake, Er Hai is cooler than the lowland tropical systems that house most Poropuntius species, with water that historically would have been oligotrophic and relatively clear. FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic and freshwater, occupying the subtropical belt. No detailed field data on microhabitat preferences, water chemistry, or seasonal behaviour have been published, reflecting the species' rapid disappearance from the scientific and collecting record after its formal description.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary studies exist for Poropuntius exiguus, and the species has not been available for field observation in recent decades. By analogy with the genus and the cyprinid barb family broadly, the species is inferred to have been an omnivore or benthic generalist, feeding on algae, detritus, small invertebrates, and organic material from the lake bed and substrate of inflowing streams.
Er Hai's historically clear, productive shallow margins would have supported invertebrate communities suitable for a benthopelagic barb. The species' diagnosed morphology — including its fin proportions and early maturation — does not suggest highly specialised feeding apparatus of the kind seen in some filter-feeding or algae-scraping Poropuntius from the Mekong mainstream.
Mating
Like all barbs, Poropuntius exiguus was almost certainly an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. The group follows a uniform reproductive strategy: gravid females are driven through vegetation or over the substrate by active males, and eggs and milt are released together without pair bonding, territory holding, or nest construction.
The species is noted for reaching sexual maturity at a small size, which, combined with the documented development of a nuchal hump in larger males (or large adults generally), hints at a reproductive biology where males compete for access to early-maturing females, and perhaps where size at first reproduction is under strong selective pressure in a confined endemic population. No spawning observations exist in the published literature.
Breeding
No captive breeding records for Poropuntius exiguus are known to exist. The species was not established in the ornamental trade and disappeared from the wild before it could be studied in aquaria. Its reproductive strategy, inferred from the family and genus, would have been egg-scattering with no parental care: adhesive eggs scattered over the substrate or among aquatic vegetation, with adults showing no guarding behaviour and likely cannibalising their own spawn given opportunity.
The species' life history — small size at maturity, a single restricted lake basin, and an apparently small total population even at the time of description — would have made it vulnerable to any disruption of its breeding habitat. The flooding, nutrient loading, and hydrological alteration of Er Hai from the 1960s onward likely eliminated suitable spawning and nursery habitat before recovery was possible.
In the aquarium
Poropuntius exiguus has never been established in the aquarium hobby and is not in trade. Given its Critically Endangered status and likely extinction in the wild, no specimens are available to hobbyists or public aquaria. It is included in the atlas as part of the record of Asian barb diversity and as documentation of a species that may no longer exist.
For those interested in conservation-relevant aquarium keeping, the broader Poropuntius genus includes a number of species from the Mekong drainage that occasionally appear in the specialist trade, and supporting ex-situ conservation programmes for endemic Chinese cyprinids through recognised zoological collections is the most meaningful avenue available.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Poropuntius exiguus as Critically Endangered (CR), under criteria B2ab(iii), assessed on 1 November 2022 by Liang Cao of the Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences. The assessment reflects the species' restriction to a single, heavily modified lake basin and the absence of reliable records since approximately 1970 — more than fifty years without a confirmed observation. Functional extinction is considered a serious possibility.
Er Hai Lake has experienced substantial transformation since the mid-twentieth century: intensified agriculture in the surrounding catchment has driven nutrient loading and eutrophication, human settlement on the lake margin has increased, invasive fish species have been introduced, and hydrological engineering has altered water levels and flow regimes. The lake's endemic fish fauna has been severely impacted by these pressures across multiple species. Poropuntius exiguus, as a small, benthopelagic endemic adapted to the lake's historically oligotrophic conditions, would have been among the most vulnerable.
The WWF Mekong's Forgotten Fishes report flags the species as part of the broader crisis facing Mekong-system fishes, where dam construction, water abstraction, and basin-wide habitat alteration threaten an extraordinarily diverse fauna. For Poropuntius exiguus, however, the threat is local and already historical: if the species survives, it does so in an extremely depleted population in a substantially altered lake. No targeted surveys, captive breeding programmes, or formal recovery plans are documented in the available literature.
