Probarbus labeaminor, the thinlip barb, is a large cyprinid of the great rivers of mainland Southeast Asia described by Tyson R. Roberts in 1992. It is the smaller and less-studied of the two valid Probarbus species, distinguished from the more familiar P. jullieni by its proportionally thinner lips. Like its congener it inhabits the deep, fast-flowing channels of major lowland river systems — principally the Mekong and Chao Phraya drainages — where it is taken by artisanal fishers but remains poorly documented in both the scientific literature and the aquarium hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Probarbus labeaminor was described by the American ichthyologist Tyson R. Roberts in 1992. The specific epithet combines the Latin labea (lip) with minor (smaller or lesser), meaning 'with smaller lips' — distinguishing this species from the congener Probarbus jullieni, which has conspicuously thick, fleshy lips. Roberts placed it in the genus Probarbus Rainboth, 1991, a small genus of large Southeast Asian river barbs within the family Cyprinidae.

The genus Probarbus has long been recognised as distinct from the catch-all genus Puntius and was not affected by the broad 2012 revision (Pethiyagoda et al.) that reassigned most Asian small barbs. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) records two valid species: P. jullieni (Sauvage, 1880) and P. labeaminor Roberts, 1992. Because the species is rarely encountered in collections or the trade, secondary literature is sparse and most available information derives from the original description and incidental records from ichthyological surveys of the Mekong basin.

Morphology

Probarbus labeaminor is a large, elongate cyprinid with a moderately compressed body and a subterminal mouth bearing the thinner lips that define it relative to P. jullieni. Like other members of the genus it has a distinctive pattern of dark horizontal stripes or rows of dark-edged scales running along the flanks, giving it a striped appearance on a silvery to gold-tinted ground colour. The dorsal fin is large and sail-like, a characteristic feature of Probarbus.

Exact maximum size data for P. labeaminor are not well established in the accessible literature. The congener P. jullieni reaches at least 31.5 in and is one of the largest cyprinids in mainland Southeast Asia; P. labeaminor is generally regarded as smaller, but precise measurements are scarce. The species is likely a large fish by hobby standards, potentially exceeding 15.5–23.5 in in adulthood, though this figure should be treated with caution given the sparse published record.

Habitat

Probarbus labeaminor inhabits the deep, swift, well-oxygenated main channels and deeper pool margins of large lowland and piedmont rivers in mainland Southeast Asia. It has been recorded from the Mekong and Chao Phraya drainages, two of the dominant river systems of the region. These rivers carry warm, relatively neutral to slightly alkaline water over sand, gravel and bedrock substrates; seasonal flood pulses drive major changes in water level and current velocity throughout the year.

The ecology of P. labeaminor in the wild is not well documented, but large Probarbus are believed to be migratory, moving into upstream reaches to spawn during the flood season and returning to deeper downstream pools during low water — a pattern typical of many large cyprinids across the Mekong system. The species is a benthopelagic fish of open water rather than heavily vegetated shallows.

Feeding

Detailed dietary studies specific to Probarbus labeaminor are not available in the accessible literature. The genus as a whole, and large river cyprinids of the Mekong more broadly, are understood to be omnivores or herbivore-omnivores, grazing on algae, plant matter, benthic invertebrates, molluscs and organic detritus. The subterminal, fleshy-lipped mouth of Probarbus species is suited to foraging near or on the substrate.

In the absence of species-specific data, dietary information should be inferred cautiously from the congener and from the feeding ecology of similarly built large rheophilic cyprinids of the region. It is not a piscivore.

Mating

Probarbus labeaminor, in common with all barbs and large river cyprinids of the Mekong, is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. Large migratory cyprinids of the Mekong system are known to undertake seasonal upstream spawning migrations triggered by rising water levels and warming temperatures at the onset of the monsoon flood pulse. During spawning, ripe males pursue gravid females and eggs and milt are broadcast over gravel or sandy substrates in flowing water.

No pair bond is formed, no nest is built, and no territory is held beyond the transient competition among males for access to spawning females. The eggs, once fertilised and scattered over the substrate, receive no further attention from either parent.

Breeding

There are no published accounts of Probarbus labeaminor being bred in captivity, and the species is effectively unknown in the aquarium hobby. Its large adult size and requirement for the conditions of major tropical river channels — strong current, deep water, warm temperature, and presumably long migratory runs — make controlled captive reproduction extremely unlikely outside specialist facilities.

As with the congener P. jullieni, any breeding in the wild is seasonal and tied to the annual flood cycle of the Mekong and Chao Phraya systems. Eggs are broadcast-scattered over the substrate in flowing water, hatch without parental attendance, and larvae drift downstream into nursery habitats in floodplain or river margins.

In the aquarium

Probarbus labeaminor does not appear in the aquarium trade and is not a suitable aquarium subject for any but the most specialised public-aquarium installations. Its potential adult size, its need for strong currents and deep, open water, and its near-total absence from captive collections worldwide place it firmly outside the scope of home aquariums.

The species is mentioned here for completeness as a member of the Probarbus genus in the context of the broader barb atlas. Anyone seeking a large, impressive cyprinid for a public exhibit should consult specialist institutions with experience in Mekong megafauna and be aware that both Probarbus species are under pressure in the wild.

Conservation

Probarbus labeaminor has not been assessed for the IUCN Red List, and its conservation status is unknown. The congener P. jullieni is listed as Endangered, and the pressures affecting it — overfishing, dam construction on the Mekong and its tributaries, sand mining, and loss of floodplain habitats — apply equally to P. labeaminor and likely all large rheophilic cyprinids of the region.

The Mekong basin faces some of the most intense hydropower development pressure of any major river system; cascade dams on the mainstream and tributaries fragment migratory corridors that large cyprinids depend on for spawning access. Without a dedicated assessment or targeted survey effort, the population status of P. labeaminor remains poorly known, and the species should be regarded as potentially threatened given the trajectory of its habitat and the documented declines of its congener and ecologically similar species across the basin.
