Probarbus labeamajor was described by Tyson Roberts in 1992, distinguishing it from the previously known Probarbus jullieni (Sauvage, 1880) on the basis of its conspicuously enlarged lips — in particular the greatly thickened lower lip, from which the species' common name derives. The genus Probarbus, erected by Sauvage in 1880, belongs to the family Cyprinidae and sits within a lineage of large, long-lived river barbs with a distinctly Southeast Asian distribution.
The Catalog of Fishes recognises two valid species in Probarbus: the seven-lined barb P. jullieni and the thicklip barb P. labeamajor. The two species share much of the same Mekong drainage range and were historically confused in older literature and among fishers; Roberts' 1992 description formalised the separation. Probarbus belongs to a broader assemblage of large cyprinids in mainland Asia, though it is phylogenetically distinct from the South Asian mahseer genera Tor and Neolissochilus.
Morphology
Probarbus labeamajor is a massive, elongated barb with a maximum recorded standard length of 59 in and a weight of 70 kg, making it one of the heaviest cyprinids in the Mekong system. The body is moderately fusiform and laterally compressed, suited to sustained movement through the main river channel. The defining characteristic of the species is the greatly enlarged, thick, fleshy lower lip — more developed than in P. jullieni — along with a prominent rostral cap and reduced barbels relative to many other large cyprinids.
The colouration in life is a silvery to brassy tone across the flanks, with a pattern of dark lateral stripes; juveniles are more strongly patterned than adults. The fins are moderately developed. The enlarged lips are thought to be an adaptation for browsing on hard substrates, consistent with the species' habit of foraging among rocks and gravel in the main river channel.
Habitat
The thicklip barb is endemic to the Mekong river system, with confirmed records from Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. It is a benthopelagic species of the main channel and large tributaries, preferring deep, fast-flowing reaches with rocky or gravelly substrates rather than floodplain lakes or slow backwaters. It is potamodromous: adults undertake upstream migrations to reach spawning grounds during seasonal flood cycles, a behaviour common to large river cyprinids across tropical Asia.
Little detailed water-chemistry data has been published for this species in the primary literature, but the Mekong main channel in its range is characterised by warm tropical temperatures, broadly near-neutral to slightly alkaline pH, and high dissolved oxygen from fast-flowing water. The species is regarded as highly intolerant of habitat alteration and is not recorded from heavily impounded or degraded reaches, which has made it acutely sensitive to the wave of hydropower development across the Mekong basin.
Feeding
Probarbus labeamajor is omnivorous, with benthic organisms and insect larvae forming a core part of its diet alongside other invertebrates picked from the substrate. The greatly enlarged, muscular lips are likely an adaptation for suction-feeding and scraping material from hard rocky surfaces in fast-flowing channel environments, supplementing the picking of invertebrates from the riverbed.
Beyond these broad categories, detailed dietary studies specific to P. labeamajor are limited in the published literature. By analogy with P. jullieni and other large potamodromous Mekong cyprinids, the diet is expected to shift seasonally with river conditions and migration stage, with increased feeding at certain times of the year corresponding to high prey availability in the main channel.
Mating
Like all barbs, Probarbus labeamajor is an egg-scattering, non-guarding broadcast spawner with no parental care of any kind. The species is potamodromous, and spawning is tied to its seasonal upstream migrations: adults move upriver to gather on gravel beds or rocky reaches that serve as communal spawning grounds, a behaviour documented for the closely related P. jullieni in southern Laos and inferred for P. labeamajor from the same river reaches.
Spawning aggregations are seasonal, driven by hydrological cues — typically timed to the annual flood cycle — and are the period when the species is most vulnerable to targeted fishing. There is no evidence of mate guarding, nest construction, or any post-spawning investment in eggs or larvae; eggs and milt are broadcast over the substrate and the adults disperse.
Breeding
Probarbus labeamajor has not been bred in aquaria, and captive breeding of this species has not been documented in the scientific or hobbyist literature. Its size alone — adults exceeding 1 metre — makes aquarium breeding effectively impossible. In the wild, the species is a seasonal broadcast spawner over gravel substrates in the main Mekong channel and its large tributaries, scattering adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs that receive no parental attention.
Conservation efforts in the Mekong have focused on identifying and protecting key spawning aggregation sites, particularly in southern Laos where Baird et al. documented the management challenges facing both Probarbus species. The loss of spawning access through dam impoundment and the direct targeting of spawning aggregations by fishers represent the most acute threats to natural reproduction.
In the aquarium
Probarbus labeamajor is not a practical aquarium fish. With a maximum recorded size of 59 in and a weight of 70 kg, it is among the largest cyprinids in Asia, and no domestic or public aquarium setting can replicate the conditions of the Mekong main channel over a fish's lifespan. The species is rarely if ever kept, and no established husbandry guidelines exist in the hobby literature.
Hobbyist sources note the species is one of the largest barb species and that it is virtually never maintained in captivity. Its ecological profile — a potamodromous migrant of deep, fast, well-oxygenated river channels — is by nature incompatible with aquarium keeping. The thicklip barb is an ambassador species for the wild Mekong fauna rather than a fishroom subject.
Conservation
Probarbus labeamajor is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, with the population trend recorded as declining. The assessment, dated February 2011, notes that the species is intolerant of habitat alteration and is expected to disappear from reaches affected by further impoundment of the Mekong and its tributaries. FishBase records a very high fishing vulnerability score of 90 out of 100, reflecting the species' large size, slow maturation, migratory dependence on unobstructed river corridors, and tendency to aggregate on spawning grounds where it can be targeted in bulk.
Baird et al. documented the management and conservation challenges facing P. labeamajor and P. jullieni in southern Laos, highlighting how migratory spawning behaviour makes both species exceptionally sensitive to fishing pressure at aggregation sites and to any physical barrier that interrupts their upstream movements. The acceleration of dam construction across the Mekong basin — particularly in Laos, China and Cambodia — since the species' IUCN assessment has only deepened these concerns. Effective conservation requires coordinated transboundary management of the Mekong system, protection of key spawning sites, and regulation of the targeted spawning-season fishery.
