Bagrichthys hypselopterus, the Blacklancer Catfish, is a large, dramatically finned bagrid from the great river systems of Southeast Asia — a scaleless nocturnal predator that grows to 15.5 in and carries a sail-like dorsal fin that immediately sets it apart from its relatives. Known in the Malay trade as Baung Layar and in the aquarium hobby as the Black or Silver Lancer, it has earned a small but devoted following for its bold appearance, its surprising willingness to spawn in captivity under the right conditions, and the occasional challenge of housing a fish that will eventually need a very large tank.

Taxonomy & naming

Bagrichthys hypselopterus was described by the Dutch colonial ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1852 from Palembang, Sumatra, making Palembang the type locality on record. Bleeker placed the species in the genus Bagrichthys, which has remained its home; the Catalog of Fishes treats Bagrichthys hypselopterus (Bleeker, 1852) as the current valid combination, and no subsequent generic reassignment to Bagrus, Mystus, or another bagrid genus is in accepted use today.

Bagrichthys belongs to the family Bagridae, the Asian and African naked catfishes, a large and taxonomically complex family that includes the commercially important Mystus and Hemibagrus groups across Asia. The genus name Bagrichthys combines the old bagrid root Bagrus with the Greek ichthys (fish), yielding essentially 'bagrid fish'. The species epithet hypselopterus is Greek: hypselos (high, tall) + pteron (fin, wing), directly describing the species' most obvious feature — the unusually elongate, sail-like dorsal fin that gives the fish its silhouette. GBIF data confirm the type locality as Palembang, Sumatra.

Morphology

The Blacklancer is a slender, laterally compressed catfish with an unmistakeable profile: the dorsal fin carries more than 18 rays and in adults rises into a tall, flag-like sail well above the body. Ground colour is a deep charcoal to blue-black on the back shading to silver-grey on the flanks, giving rise to both the 'Black Lancer' and 'Silver Lancer' trade names depending on the angle of light. The underside is pale. The fish has the three pairs of barbels typical of bagrids — one long maxillary pair and two shorter mandibular pairs — and the forked caudal fin common to the family.

Maximum recorded standard length is 15.5 in (FishBase), making this a large catfish by home-aquarium standards. Like all bagrids the skin is entirely scaleless — naked — which carries significant implications for medication. The dorsal fin spine is stiff, serrated along its edge, and can lock in the erect position; the pectoral spines are similarly robust. Males are reportedly distinguished by longer barbels and a visible elongate genital papilla; otherwise the sexes are difficult to tell apart until the fish are in breeding condition, when females become noticeably fuller in the belly.

Habitat

In the wild, Bagrichthys hypselopterus inhabits the main channels and larger rivers of lowland Southeast Asia — Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo. FishBase describes it as preferring deep-water sections with a muddy substrate and swift current rather than the shallow, slow-moving margins favoured by many other catfishes. It is a river fish of the lowland flood-plain drainage, not a blackwater species.

Water parameters in its home rivers sit comfortably in the moderate range: temperatures of 73–82 °F, pH 6.5–7.5, and hardness around 6–16 dH. These are not the tea-stained, highly acidic conditions of classic peat-swamp blackwater; the Blacklancer comes from clear or turbid river water closer to neutral. The species has commercial importance as a food fish in parts of its range, harvested from the wild alongside farmed stocks.

Feeding

Bagrichthys hypselopterus is a nocturnal benthic omnivore. FishBase records its diet as chironomid larvae and pupae, other aquatic insects, and small fish — the profile of an active micro-predator that forages the river bottom after dark. Larger individuals are capable of taking fish of appreciable size.

In the aquarium the Blacklancer adapts readily to sinking pellets and wafer-type catfish foods, and it responds eagerly to frozen and live offerings such as bloodworm, earthworms, and prawns. Because it is primarily nocturnal, the most reliable way to ensure it is getting enough food is to offer sinking food after the lights go out, once any faster or more competitive tank mates have settled. Conditioning for breeding is best done with a varied diet of live and frozen invertebrates over several weeks.

Mating

Bagrichthys hypselopterus can be spawned in captivity, and the documented method from hobbyist sources is atypical for a bagrid: pairs or a male-female group come together in a T-formation embrace reminiscent of what is more commonly described in cichlids, with the male manoeuvring alongside the female. Spawning results in clumps of eggs — reportedly 10 or more per batch — deposited on a firm surface such as a spawning pot or smooth substrate.

The male is territorial and will drive competing males away from a female. PlanetCatfish records note that breeders keep one male with one or more females to avoid conflict. Conditioning the pair on live and frozen foods at a warm stable temperature (around 75 °F) and then triggering a spawning attempt with a large cold-water change — around 80% replacement with cooler water near 64 °F, combined with vigorous aeration — mimics the temperature drop of seasonal rainfall in the fish's native rivers and has been documented to stimulate spawning.

Breeding

Eggs are typically laid in clumps on the chosen surface and hatch in approximately three to four days at breeding temperature. When the parents are well fed they tolerate the eggs without eating them, which simplifies rearing; keepers report that egg survival is good with a conditioned, fed pair. Parental care beyond the spawning act itself has not been prominently described — this is not a species with elaborate nest-guarding on the scale of some other catfishes, but the territorial behaviour of the male during courtship suggests some site attachment.

Breeding in home aquaria is uncommon but achievable and has been documented in the specialist hobbyist literature. The species is also commercially fished and presumably spawns freely in its wild river habitats. Unlike many large Asian catfishes (the giant pimelodids or Pangasiidae, for example) it does not require hormone induction for captive reproduction, which puts it within reach of a dedicated keeper with appropriate space and the patience to condition the fish properly. Fry care details are sparse in available sources.

In the aquarium

The Blacklancer Catfish is not a fish for beginners or for modest tanks. An adult at 15.5 in needs a very large aquarium — a minimum footprint of 180 × 23.5 in is a reasonable starting point, and larger is better given the fish's active nature and depth requirements. The size trap is real: juveniles sold at 2–3 in grow steadily, and keepers who do not account for the adult size often find themselves with an overcrowded fish. Lifespan in aquaria is recorded at five to eight years, so this is a medium-term commitment.

The scaleless skin is medically significant. Like all naked catfishes, Bagrichthys hypselopterus has no protective scale layer and is consequently more sensitive to copper-based treatments and many standard fish medications than scaled species; always dose conservatively (a half-dose is often advised as a starting point) and monitor carefully. The dorsal and pectoral spines are stiff, serrated, and lock in place — they will tangle immediately in a net mesh and can deliver a painful jab to an unwary hand. Always move this fish in a container, never in a net.

Water should be kept in the 73–82 °F range at a pH of 6.5–7.5, moderately soft to moderately hard. The fish is primarily nocturnal and should be provided with caves or large pipe sections for daytime retreat; it will be rarely seen during the day but becomes active and interesting after dark. It can be gradually hand-trained to feed at dusk. Compatible tank mates should be large enough not to be eaten and robust enough to hold their own; small schooling fish are at risk. The species has a recorded lifespan of five to eight years in aquarium conditions.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Bagrichthys hypselopterus as Least Concern in 2018. The species is widespread across the large river systems of Southeast Asia — Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo — and its populations are considered currently stable. It is commercially fished for food throughout parts of its range, indicating it remains abundant enough to sustain that harvest.

The principal long-term pressures on riverine catfishes in Southeast Asia are habitat degradation through deforestation, agricultural run-off, dam construction altering flow regimes and sediment loads, and increasing fishing pressure. The Blacklancer's preference for deep-water main-channel habitats may buffer it somewhat from the worst of the shallow-margin disturbance, but continued monitoring of lowland Southeast Asian river systems remains important. Aquarium specimens are generally wild-collected rather than captive-bred at commercial scale, though captive breeding is achievable as noted above.
