Taxonomy & naming
Bagrichthys majusculus was described by the Singaporean ichthyologist Heok Hee Ng in 2002. It belongs to the family Bagridae, the Asian bagrid catfishes, a large group centred on the genera Mystus, Hemibagrus, Sperata and Bagrichthys that spans South and Southeast Asia. The Catalog of Fishes treats Bagrichthys majusculus as the valid name; it has never been placed in another genus, so there is no historical synonymy to correct here.
The genus name Bagrichthys combines "Bagrus" — itself the old, broad genus name once used for many bagrid-type catfishes across Africa and Asia — with the Greek ichthys, "fish", giving roughly "Bagrus-like fish". The species epithet majusculus is Latin for "somewhat larger", a comparative diminutive of major, chosen because the type series reached a larger size than had been recorded for its closest relatives in the genus at the time of description.
Morphology
Bagrichthys majusculus reaches about 7 in standard length, based on the largest specimen in the type series; a paratype male measured 6 in SL. That makes it a mid-sized bagrid — larger than the smallest Mystus but nowhere near the giant Hemibagrus and Sperata species that share its range. As in the rest of the genus, the dorsal-fin spine is greatly elongated (roughly a quarter to a third of standard length) and trails backward over the body, a signature silhouette for Bagrichthys that separates it at a glance from most other bagrids.
The pectoral spine is shorter but still stiff and serrated, in the range of 16–21% of standard length. The species has 10–13 gill rakers and an adipose-fin base running close to half of standard length. Like every catfish in this account, the skin is naked — there are no scales — which matters directly for how the fish should be medicated (see "In the aquarium"). Sexes differ slightly: mature males show a visible genital papilla and somewhat longer barbels than females.
Habitat
This species is known from the Mun River in Ubon Ratchathani province, eastern Thailand — a major Mekong tributary — and more broadly from the Mekong and Chao Phraya drainages, with records extending into Mekong tributaries in Laos and a presumed presence in Cambodia. It is essentially a Mekong-basin endemic among the Bagrichthys.
It lives in large, turbid, slow-flowing rivers over muddy substrates, and during the rainy season it moves out into flooded riparian zones along the riverbanks, which also appears to be where spawning takes place. Water in these systems runs warm and on the soft, slightly acidic-to-neutral side — reported at roughly 75–82 °F, pH 5.5–7.0, with fairly soft to moderately mineralised hardness. It is not a fish of clear, fast-flowing water and does poorly against strong current.
Feeding
Bagrichthys majusculus is a nocturnal benthic omnivore. In its native rivers it forages the bottom mostly after dark, taking small invertebrates and detritus stirred up from the muddy substrate rather than hunting actively in open water.
In the aquarium it accepts live and frozen foods — Artemia, Tubifex, bloodworm — alongside sinking pellets that include some vegetable content, mirroring its omnivorous, detritus-inclusive diet in the wild. As with most nocturnal catfish, offering food after the lights go out helps it compete for a share against more active, daytime tankmates.
Mating
Wild spawning has been linked to the rainy season, when the species moves from the main river channel into flooded riparian vegetation along the banks — the same seasonal flood pulse that many Mekong basin fishes use to trigger breeding and to give newly hatched fry access to sheltered, food-rich floodplain habitat. Beyond that seasonal and habitat association, no courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for this species.
Sexual dimorphism is subtle: mature males can be told from females by a visible genital papilla and by somewhat longer barbels, but there is no reported colour or body-shape difference to work from, and no aquarium account of pairing or courtship exists to describe.
Breeding
Breeding of Bagrichthys majusculus has not been recorded in captivity. What is known comes entirely from field observations of wild rainy-season spawning migrations into flooded riparian zones, not from aquarium reproduction. There is no report of parental care, nest-building or egg-guarding behaviour for this species either in the wild or in the hobby.
This is honestly the pattern for most of the Mekong's lesser-known bagrids: they are collected from the wild for the trade rather than propagated, and the handful that are farmed commercially in Southeast Asia are larger, better-known genera (Mystus, Hemibagrus) rather than Bagrichthys. Anyone keeping this species should not expect it to spawn in a home aquarium, and should treat any wild-collected stock as exactly that.
In the aquarium
At close to 7 in, Bagrichthys majusculus is a real commitment rather than a small community catfish — it needs a long, spacious tank with a soft substrate it can forage over, not a nano setup. Because it is scaleless, like all catfish in this genus, it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and to many standard treatments; dose conservatively, often at half the labelled rate, and monitor closely.
The elongated dorsal spine and the serrated pectoral spines lock erect and can snag in a net, jabbing the keeper in the process — move this fish in a container rather than netting it. It is shy and strongly nocturnal, so it needs generous cover (driftwood, piping, dim lighting) to feel secure during the day, and it is intolerant of strong water flow, which rules out fast-flow river-style filtration setups. It has a reputation for territoriality toward other bottom-dwelling species, so it is best kept singly, or as one male with three or more females if space allows. Given how little is documented about this species, treat any husbandry notes as provisional and watch the individual fish closely.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Bagrichthys majusculus as Data Deficient, an assessment made in March 2011 and current as of the 2022.2 Red List update. That reflects a genuine lack of study rather than any confirmed population decline — the species is known from relatively few localities across the Mun, Mekong and Chao Phraya systems, and no dedicated population survey appears to have been carried out.
The wider Mekong basin faces well-documented pressures — hydropower damming, sediment and flow alteration, and heavy fishing pressure across its floodplain fisheries — and any species tied to the river's natural flood pulse for spawning, as this one appears to be, is potentially vulnerable to those changes even without a formal assessment confirming it. Until a proper population study is done, Data Deficient is the honest and appropriate status.
