Taxonomy & naming
Bagrichthys micranodus was described by Tyson R. Roberts in 1989. It sits in the family Bagridae, the Asian bagrid catfishes, within the genus Bagrichthys — a small group of long-finned bagrids distributed from Japan south through mainland and island Southeast Asia to Borneo, alongside better-known relatives such as Mystus, Hemibagrus and Sperata. The Catalog of Fishes treats Bagrichthys micranodus as a currently valid name in this genus.
The epithet micranodus comes from the Greek mikrós, "small", combined with a reference to the fish's reduced, near-toothless jaw structure — the ETYFish Project glosses it as alluding to the species' small maximum size (around 5 in as originally described) and its virtually toothless jaws, a useful field mark within a genus whose members can otherwise look quite similar.
Morphology
Like other members of its genus, Bagrichthys micranodus has the characteristic "black lancer" silhouette: an elongated, laterally compressed body, a pointed head, and a tall, elevated dorsal fin whose leading rays extend well above the body depth, giving the fish a distinctive sail-backed profile. Long, slender barbels project from around the mouth, used to feel out food on and near the riverbed in low light or darkness.
FishBase records a maximum size of about 7.5 in standard length. That is a genuinely mid-sized bagrid — not a nano fish — and it should be planned for at that adult length rather than assumed to stay small. As in virtually all catfishes the skin is scaleless, which makes it more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and to some other treatments; dose conservatively. Bagrids typically carry stiff, serrated, locking spines at the leading edge of the dorsal and pectoral fins, which catch in aquarium nets and can jab careless hands — the fish is best moved in a container rather than netted.
Habitat
Bagrichthys micranodus was described from Borneo and for a long time was considered endemic to that island. FishBase lists it as a freshwater, demersal, tropical species. A more recent publication documenting first records from Sumatra (from Cala Lake in South Sumatra province) extends its known range beyond the original Bornean type locality, suggesting the species — or at least populations referable to it — may be more widely distributed across the Sunda region than once thought.
Detailed water-chemistry data for wild populations is not well documented in the sources consulted here. As a Sundaland lowland species it most likely inhabits the warm, slow-flowing rivers, swamps and blackwater-influenced lakes typical of Borneo and Sumatra, but specific pH, hardness and seasonal figures are not established and should not be assumed from other, better-studied Southeast Asian blackwater fish.
Feeding
No species-specific feeding studies were found in the sources consulted, but FishBase records a trophic level of about 3.3, consistent with an omnivorous-to-carnivorous diet typical of the genus and family. Bagrid catfishes in general are nocturnal benthic foragers, using their barbels to locate invertebrates, small prey and organic debris on and near the substrate after dark.
In the aquarium, this feeding style should be assumed to apply: offer sinking pellets, frozen foods (bloodworm, mysis, chopped prawn) and other prepared foods, ideally after lights-out so a barbel-feeding nocturnal fish is not out-competed by more visually oriented, daytime-active tankmates.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Bagrichthys micranodus in the sources reviewed here. Data is sparse to the point that even the general shape of its reproductive strategy — territorial pairing, group spawning, or otherwise — cannot be stated with confidence from available literature.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented in the wild or in captivity for this species, and FishBase itself does not record a breeding account for it. Many bagrid catfishes of this size are not routinely bred by home aquarists, and commercial availability of related Bagrichthys species typically depends on wild collection rather than aquarium or farm propagation. Absent any confirmed record, it would be inaccurate to assign this species a specific breeding mode; treat it honestly as unbred, or at least unrecorded, in captivity.
In the aquarium
Bagrichthys micranodus reaches roughly 7.5 in, so it needs a correspondingly sized tank with a long footprint rather than a small community setup — the size trap of assuming a slim-bodied catfish stays small applies here. Being scaleless, it is medication-sensitive; use copper and other treatments at conservative, reduced doses. Its dorsal and pectoral spines can lock rigid and snag in a net, so move it with a container instead.
As a nocturnal, barbel-feeding fish it appreciates dim lighting, driftwood or overhangs to shelter under by day, and a soft, dark substrate that will not abrade its sensitive barbels. Feed it after the lights go out with sinking foods so it can compete for food on its own terms. Very little husbandry information specific to this species has been published, so care should draw cautiously on general bagrid husbandry rather than firm, species-specific guidance.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Bagrichthys micranodus as Data Deficient (as of a 2018 assessment), reflecting how little is documented about its population size, trends and full distribution. This is common for a Southeast Asian riverine catfish that is not a major fisheries or aquarium-trade species.
The recent first record from Sumatra, in addition to the original Bornean range, suggests its true distribution may be broader than the type description implied, which itself argues for more survey work before its conservation status can be assessed with confidence. As with many Sundaland freshwater fishes, habitat pressures from deforestation, peat-swamp drainage and river modification across Borneo and Sumatra are the general backdrop of concern, even though they have not been quantified specifically for this species.
