Taxonomy & naming
Bagrichthys macracanthus was originally described by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1854, based on specimens collected from Sumatra. Bleeker placed it in Pimelodus before the genus Bagrichthys was erected to accommodate the distinctively long-spined Southeast Asian bagrids now known to share a close common ancestry. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Bagrichthys macracanthus as the valid combination, and places the genus firmly within the family Bagridae — the Asian and African bagrid catfishes, a large and taxonomically complex group within Siluriformes.
Within the genus Bagrichthys, B. macracanthus is the best-known species and the one most frequently encountered in the aquarium trade. A handful of other Bagrichthys species are recognised from Sundaland rivers, but the genus is rarely revised in depth and relationships among them remain partially unsettled. The species epithet macracanthus is from the Greek makros (long) and akantha (spine or thorn), a direct reference to the dramatically elongated dorsal fin spine that makes the fish immediately identifiable.
Morphology
The black lancer is a slender, moderately compressed catfish with a long, tapering body and a distinctively extended first dorsal-fin spine — the "lance" of its trade name — that can be locked erect and is serrated along its length. The body depth is relatively shallow (3.7–3.9 times in standard length) and the head is moderate (about 4.9–5.0 times in standard length), giving the fish a streamlined silhouette. Ground colour ranges from very dark brown to near-black on the dorsum, fading only slightly ventrally; in good condition the fins may show pale or cream margins that contrast sharply with the dark body.
The skin is entirely naked — no scales and no bony plates — a characteristic of bagrids generally that has direct implications for medication sensitivity. Three pairs of barbels are present: one long maxillary pair and two mandibular pairs. Maximum recorded size from FishBase is 10 in standard length, with Seriously Fish reporting most adults in the 8–9 in range; purchasers should plan for a fish approaching 9–10 in SL at full size. Males can be distinguished by a small but externally visible genital papilla anterior to the anal fin.
Habitat
Bagrichthys macracanthus is known from Sumatra, with the type locality at the confluence of the Lamatang and Enim rivers in the Palembang Province of southern Sumatra. The species has occasionally been reported from Borneo and Java in the older literature, but the Sumatran population is the best-documented and most widely accepted.
It inhabits slow to moderate-flow river channels, backwaters, and seasonally inundated floodplain forest — the so-called riparian zones that flood at the onset of the wet season. Substrates are typically fine sand or silt with accumulated leaf litter and submerged wood. The water is soft to moderately soft (18–268 ppm total dissolved solids) and slightly to moderately acidic: temperature 72–82 °F, pH 5.5–7.0. These are the blackwater-tinged drainages characteristic of much of lowland Sumatra, and while the species is not an obligate blackwater fish, it clearly does best at the lower end of that pH range.
Feeding
In the wild, Bagrichthys macracanthus is a nocturnal benthic omnivore — it forages the river bed after dark, rooting through soft substrate and leaf litter for small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, worms, and organic detritus. The diet is opportunistic rather than highly specialised.
In aquaria the species accepts a varied diet without difficulty. Sinking pellets (including Spirulina-enriched or vegetable varieties), frozen bloodworm, Tubifex, and Artemia are all taken readily. Live food is relished but not required. Because the fish is strongly nocturnal, the most reliable feeding strategy is to drop food into the tank after lights are out, ensuring the lancer can forage without competition from diurnal tankmates. Offering food in the evening also reinforces its natural activity window and reduces daytime stress.
Mating
In the wild, Bagrichthys macracanthus is understood to spawn in the flooded riparian forests that inundate seasonally at the onset of the wet season. The rising water, shift in water chemistry, and abundance of food associated with the flood pulse almost certainly trigger reproductive readiness, as is common in many large Southeast Asian river catfishes.
Males can be identified by the externally visible genital papilla, which is absent or less prominent in females. Beyond that external marker and the expectation that females grow fuller-bodied when ripe, little detailed information is available on mate choice, courtship, or spawning site preference in this species. Whether it is a cavity spawner, open substrate spawner, or uses another strategy is not documented from field observations.
Breeding
Breeding Bagrichthys macracanthus in aquaria has not been recorded. The wild spawning trigger — the seasonal flood pulse of Sumatran riparian forests, with the associated drop in water conductivity, temperature fluctuation, and new food input — is inherently difficult to simulate at home, and the species is not commercially farm-bred in significant numbers.
Keepers wishing to attempt breeding would need a very large system, a well-conditioned male-female pair, and a simulated wet-season induction: a gradual reduction in water temperature and conductivity, followed by a significant top-up of softer, slightly cooler water to simulate rising floodwater. Until a confirmed captive breeding is reported, this must be treated as an essentially unbreedable species under normal aquarium conditions.
In the aquarium
The black lancer is a species for the experienced keeper with adequate space. At up to 9–10 in standard length it needs a tank of at least 40 US gal — longer is better than taller — with a soft, fine sand substrate it can rest on without abrading its ventral surface. Driftwood, slate caves, and dense arrangements of leaf litter provide the daytime cover it demands; without retreats it will remain hidden behind equipment and stressed. Lighting should be subdued or the tank densely planted around cover areas.
Water quality is non-negotiable: soft to moderately soft (target 18–150 ppm TDS), slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.5–7.0), and warm (75–82 °F). A heater guard is strongly recommended — the fish is attracted to warm surfaces and burn injuries are a documented risk. Because the skin is entirely naked and scaleless, this species is significantly more sensitive to copper-based medications and many common fish treatments than a scaled species; any medication should be used at the lowest effective dose, and proprietary copper treatments (for ich, velvet) should be avoided or heavily diluted.
The extended, serrated, locking dorsal spine is a practical hazard: it tangles in fine mesh nets and can draw blood. Always move this fish in a smooth-sided container rather than a net. The spine is not considered venomous in the way that some catfishes' spines are, but a puncture from serrated bone is painful and carries infection risk. Bagrichthys macracanthus is peaceful toward tankmates too large to swallow, and does well with other Southeast Asian river fish of comparable size — loaches, larger rasboras, or other bagrids — that share its soft-acidic water preference.
Conservation
Bagrichthys macracanthus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List, and its status is therefore Not Evaluated (NE). The Malaysia Biodiversity Information System notes that data on the species are sparse, consistent with the limited published research on Sumatran lowland river catfishes as a group.
The primary pressures on its habitat are deforestation, the conversion of Sumatran riparian lowlands to oil-palm and pulpwood plantations, and the associated sedimentation and acidification of river systems beyond natural blackwater levels. Its reliance on seasonally flooded forest for spawning makes it particularly sensitive to floodplain modification. Aquarium specimens are typically wild-collected from Sumatra; the trade volume is modest, but given the lack of a captive-breeding supply chain and ongoing habitat loss, sourcing from reputable importers who work transparently with their collection partners is advisable.
