Taxonomy & naming
Clarias liocephalus was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1898. It belongs to the family Clariidae, the airbreathing or walking catfishes, and to the genus Clarias, a large Old World group found across Africa and Asia that includes some of the best-known farmed and invasive catfishes on Earth. The Catalog of Fishes treats Clarias liocephalus as the currently valid name, and the genus placement has been stable through the various revisions that have reshuffled so much of Siluriformes.
The genus name Clarias derives from the Greek chlaros, meaning "lively" or "vigorous", a nod to the family's famous ability to survive out of water and wriggle across land using its stout pectoral spines. The species epithet liocephalus is built from the Greek leios ("smooth") and kephale ("head"), describing the smooth, unornamented head shield that helps distinguish it from more heavily sculptured relatives in the genus.
Morphology
Like other Clarias, this species has the classic walking-catfish silhouette: an elongated, cylindrical body, a flattened, bony head, a long low dorsal fin running most of the length of the back, and a similarly long anal fin, giving the fish an eel-like profile from above. FishBase records a dorsal fin of 67–79 soft rays, an anal fin of 53–67 soft rays and 55–58 vertebrae — a high ray count typical of the genus. Four pairs of barbels ring the mouth, used to feel out food in murky, vegetation-choked water.
Maximum recorded size is 12.5 in total length (FishBase) — small for a Clarias, but still a substantial fish. As in every member of the family the skin is entirely scaleless, which is important for medicating this species (see "In the aquarium"). The pectoral and dorsal fins each carry a stiff, serrated spine that can be locked erect; in Clarias these spines are associated with venom glands, and stings from the genus are documented to cause intense pain, localized swelling and redness, and systemic effects such as tachycardia and weakness. Females mature around 4.5 in TL and males around 5.5 in TL.
Habitat
Clarias liocephalus is native to the East African Great Lakes region, recorded from Lake Victoria, Lake Edward, Lake George, Lake Kivu and their associated Uganda and Rwanda lake systems, Lake Tanganyika, Lake Malawi, and river systems including the Kagera, Malagarazi, Ruzizi, Luapula, Lualaba, Cunene, Okavango, upper Zambezi and Kafue. This is an unusually broad distribution across several major African drainage basins.
Rather than living out in open lake water, it is a demersal, bottom-dwelling fish of marginal wetlands — water-lily beds, papyrus swamps and dense marginal weed growth along lake and river edges. FishBase gives a tropical temperature range of roughly 72–82 °F for the species. These swampy margins are often low in dissolved oxygen, which is exactly the niche the family's air-breathing organ evolved to exploit.
Feeding
A published study of the species in wetlands of western Uganda found Clarias liocephalus to be an omnivorous, opportunistic feeder, taking insect larvae and small fishes as major prey items alongside other invertebrate and plant material. It forages mostly after dark, using its barbels to locate food in the dim, plant-choked water of its swampy habitat, and will consume tankmates small enough to swallow.
In the aquarium this translates to an undemanding but predatory feeder: it accepts sinking pellets, and meaty foods such as chopped fish, prawn and earthworm, but any companion small enough to fit in its mouth should be considered at risk. As a facultative air-breather it also periodically rises to gulp air at the surface, a normal behaviour rather than a sign of distress.
Mating
Detailed courtship and spawning behaviour for Clarias liocephalus itself has not been documented in the sources available here. What is well established for the genus Clarias as a whole — including the closely related and commercially important C. gariepinus — is that natural spawning in the wild is typically tied to seasonal flooding and rising water levels, with pairs or small groups scattering adhesive eggs over submerged vegetation and debris in shallow, flooded margins, with no nest built and no ongoing parental care.
For aquarium purposes the practical reality is that mating in Clarias is rarely observed at all: commercial-scale reproduction of the genus bypasses natural courtship entirely in favour of hormone-induced spawning (see "Breeding"), and there is no meaningful body of hobbyist reports of this species pairing and spawning in a home tank.
Breeding
Clarias liocephalus is not bred in the home aquarium. Species in this genus — most thoroughly documented for the farmed African catfish, C. gariepinus — are reproduced at commercial scale using hormone-induced spawning: females are injected with a GnRH-analogue preparation such as Ovaprim (commonly around 0.5 ml/kg body weight), with a latency period of roughly 12 hours at 72 °F before eggs can be stripped and fertilised with milt from a sacrificed or similarly injected male. This is standard aquaculture practice across the genus and is essentially the only reliable way Clarias species are propagated.
There is no established protocol, hormonal or otherwise, for breeding C. liocephalus specifically in captivity, and no parental care is exhibited by the genus once eggs are laid or stripped — adults do not guard eggs or fry. Anyone acquiring this species should not expect to breed it; it is a fish kept for its natural history and appearance, not for a home breeding project.
In the aquarium
The single most important fact for a prospective keeper is size: Clarias liocephalus reaches up to 12.5 in total length, and while that is modest for the genus, it is still a big-bodied, long-lived catfish that outgrows the vast majority of home aquariums and needs a correspondingly large, long tank with a secure, weighted lid — this species is a capable air-breather and an accomplished escape artist on land. Provide dense cover (broad-leaved plants, roots, caves) to mimic the swampy, vegetation-choked margins it comes from, and expect a nocturnal fish that stays hidden by day.
Two handling points apply directly from its biology. Like all Clarias it is scaleless, so it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and many standard treatments — dose conservatively. It also carries stiff, locking, venom-associated pectoral and dorsal spines that readily snag in a net and can inflict a painful sting, so it should always be moved in a container rather than netted. Because it is a predatory omnivore, tankmates must be too large to be swallowed; small fish and invertebrates will eventually disappear. Clarias as a genus is also a well-known invasive group outside its native range — this fish should never be released into local waterways.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Clarias liocephalus as Least Concern. This reflects its unusually wide distribution across multiple African Great Lakes and river systems — Lake Victoria, Edward, George, Kivu, Tanganyika and Malawi among them — which gives the species a broad safety margin compared with many single-lake or single-river African catfishes.
As a wetland-margin specialist, though, its long-term status is tied to the health of the papyrus swamps, water-lily beds and marginal weed habitats it depends on, which face ongoing pressure from wetland drainage, agricultural conversion and shoreline development around the lakes it inhabits. It is not a significant target of the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not considered a driver of its conservation status.
