Taxonomy & naming
Clarias alluaudi was described by the Belgian-British ichthyologist George Albert Boulenger in 1906. It belongs to the family Clariidae, the airbreathing or walking catfishes, and to the genus Clarias, a large Old World group found across Africa and Asia. The Catalog of Fishes treats Clarias alluaudi as the valid name, and it has remained in Clarias since its description — it has not been shuffled through other genera the way many older Siluriformes names have.
The genus name Clarias derives from the Greek chlaros, "lively" or "vigorous", a fitting reference to the family's tenacity out of water and its ability to breathe air and wriggle overland between pools. The species epithet alluaudi honours the French entomologist and collector Charles Alluaud, whose East African expeditions supplied specimens to European museums around the turn of the twentieth century.
Morphology
Like other Clarias, C. alluaudi has the unmistakable walking-catfish body plan: an elongated, cylindrical, scaleless body, a flattened head, four pairs of long barbels around a wide mouth, and a low, very long dorsal fin that runs most of the length of the back and merges visually with an equally long anal fin, giving the fish an eel-like silhouette. The skin is smooth and naked rather than scaled or armour-plated.
Maximum recorded size is about 9 in total length (FishBase), which places it among the smaller members of a genus that includes true giants — but 9 in is still a substantial fish, roughly the length of a dinner plate, and far larger than the few-centimetre juveniles typically sold. Behind the head sits the accessory air-breathing organ characteristic of the family, a pair of tree-like structures off the gill arches that let the fish gulp air at the surface and survive in poorly oxygenated water. Clarias also carry stiff, sharp pectoral spines that can lock erect; these are not venomous in this genus but can jab a careless hand or tangle badly in a net.
Habitat
Clarias alluaudi has an unusually wide East African range for a single species, spanning Lakes Victoria, Kyoga, Edward, Rukwa and Tanganyika, along with the Malagarasi and Rusizi Rivers that connect several of these systems. It occupies a broad range of habitats within that range — river and stream margins, muddy lake shorelines, papyrus swamps, and even mountainous streams at higher elevation, reflecting the adaptability that makes the genus so successful across Africa.
Water across this range is tropical, roughly between 3°N and 9°S, and Clarias as a genus tolerate a wide span of conditions: FAO data for the genus puts the comfortable range at about 77–88 °F with good growth up to 91 °F, a pH of roughly 6.0–8.0, and soft to slightly hard water. The species' presence in oxygen-poor swamps and stagnant shallows is possible specifically because of its air-breathing capacity — a genus-wide trait that lets Clarias colonise waters most fish cannot survive in.
Feeding
PlanetCatfish records the natural diet as chiefly insects, consistent with the opportunistic, omnivore-leaning-carnivore feeding typical of smaller Clarias species. It forages along the bottom and is not a picky eater, taking whatever invertebrate prey and detritus it encounters in swamp, stream or lake-margin habitat.
In the aquarium it accepts the full range of prepared foods — sinking pellets, wafers, frozen bloodworm and other meaty frozen foods — without fuss. PlanetCatfish notes that while it is capable of eating smaller fish, it rarely does so when kept as a solitary specimen, making it markedly less of a wholesale predator than many of its larger relatives; even so, tankmates should be sized with enough margin that they cannot be swallowed.
Mating
PlanetCatfish reports no recorded spawnings of Clarias alluaudi in captivity. Because of its comparatively modest adult size next to other Clarias, it is flagged as a candidate for home aquarium breeding attempts, but no courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented from either the wild or the hobby. Large commercial Clarias relatives (C. gariepinus and kin) are routinely bred by hormone injection at fish farms, and it is reasonable to assume similar biology in this species, but that has not been demonstrated for C. alluaudi specifically.
Breeding
There is no confirmed breeding of Clarias alluaudi in the home aquarium — PlanetCatfish explicitly notes no recorded spawnings. Within the wider genus, breeding at scale is achieved commercially through hormone-induced spawning of farmed broodstock, a practice built around the genus's tolerance of crowded, low-oxygen conditions and its air-breathing physiology rather than around any natural pairing behaviour observable in a display tank.
Given the lack of any documented spawning, prospective breeders have essentially no established protocol to follow for this species; its smaller size relative to giant Clarias at least makes it more plausible as a future aquarium-breeding project than fish that outgrow any home system entirely. Until spawning is documented, this should be treated as an essentially unbred species in captivity.
In the aquarium
At up to 9 in total length, Clarias alluaudi is not a fish for a small tank, even though it is modest by the standards of its size-trap-prone genus — plan for a good-sized, securely lidded aquarium, since Clarias are strong, determined air-breathers that will attempt to climb out of any gap in search of atmospheric air. PlanetCatfish recommends soft, neutral-pH, blackwater-tinted, planted setups, giving it plenty of cover to retreat into during the day; it is most active after dark.
Being scaleless, it is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and should be dosed conservatively when treating disease. Its pectoral spines lock erect and can snag badly in a net or jab the keeper, so it is best transferred in a container rather than netted. It is reported as peaceful when kept singly and rarely predatory on tankmates its own size or larger, but aggression can appear if multiple specimens are housed together, and — as with any Clarias — releasing surplus fish into local waterways must never be done, since the genus is a well-documented invasive threat outside its native range.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Clarias alluaudi as Least Concern, based on a 2015 assessment. Its wide distribution across multiple Great Lakes systems and connecting rivers in East Africa — Victoria, Kyoga, Edward, Rukwa, Tanganyika, the Malagarasi and the Rusizi — gives it a broad range and presumably resilient populations relative to the many narrow-range endemics found in the same lakes.
That range does overlap with water bodies under heavy pressure from overfishing, pollution, sedimentation and invasive species, particularly Lake Victoria, so long-term monitoring remains worthwhile even for a currently secure, wide-ranging species.
