Belodontichthys truncatus, the Dracula sheatfish, is a large, piscivorous silurid catfish of the Mekong and Chao Phraya river systems — a needle-toothed ambush predator that can reach 23.5 in standard length and is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade. Its common names allude to the grotesquely elongated, upturned lower jaw lined with curved, fang-like teeth, an adaptation for seizing live fish in open water. It is a handsome if demanding species: scaleless, sensitive to medication, and a specialist fish-eater that belongs in a very large, expert-only display rather than a community aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

Belodontichthys truncatus was formally described by Maurice Kottelat and Kelvin K.P. Ng in 1999, placing it in the family Siluridae — the sheatfishes, a group of scaleless, elongate catfishes distributed across Eurasia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Belodontichthys truncatus Kottelat & Ng, 1999 as the valid combination. Wikispecies records the same authority and places it unambiguously within Siluridae.

The genus Belodontichthys is small and closely allied to the genus Ompok within Siluridae. The genus name combines the Greek belos (needle, dart) and odous (tooth) with ichthys (fish), effectively meaning 'needle-toothed fish' — an apt description of the needle-like fang rows lining the jaws. The species epithet truncatus is Latin for 'cut off' or 'truncated', probably referring to the shape of the tail fin or jaw profile. The fish is marketed in the aquarium trade under the evocative common names Dracula sheatfish and twisted-jaw catfish, both referencing the elongated, upturned lower jaw.

Morphology

Belodontichthys truncatus is a large, elongate silurid with a distinctively bizarre head: the lower jaw is markedly extended and curves upward past the snout tip, producing a gaping, underbite appearance reminiscent of some deep-sea predators. Both jaws carry rows of slender, recurved, fang-like teeth well suited for gripping struggling fish. The body is laterally compressed and tapers smoothly to a forked or slightly indented caudal fin. Colouration is silvery-grey to pale gold, often with a faint iridescence, and the fins are semi-transparent.

Adult standard length reaches 23.5 in (FishBase), making this one of the larger silurids in the ornamental trade. Like all silurids, the fish is completely scaleless — the skin is smooth and naked throughout — which makes it acutely sensitive to copper-based medications and several common anti-parasitic treatments. The pectoral fins are well developed and carry the stiff, sharp spines typical of siluriform catfishes; these can lock erect and catch in a net, so the fish should always be moved in a container rather than netted.

Habitat

Belodontichthys truncatus is native to the Chao Phraya and Mekong river drainages, with a range spanning Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam (FishBase; GBIF occurrence records). It is a demersal to midwater species of large tropical rivers, occupying open channels and flooded zones in the lower to middle reaches of these major systems.

Population genetic research (Hindawi, 2017) confirms an endemic presence in the Mekong Basin and documents a seasonal behavioural shift: during the monsoon rainy season (June–July) mature adults undertake upstream breeding migrations through swift-water reaches such as the Khone Falls before entering flooded forest habitat for spawning. Water conditions in these rivers are broadly tropical — warm throughout the year, and spanning a range from clear to moderately turbid. The species is described as adaptable to harder, more alkaline water in aquarium conditions despite originating in lowland tropical rivers.

Feeding

Belodontichthys truncatus is a highly specialised piscivore in the wild, feeding predominantly on cyprinids and other small fish. The elongated, upturned lower jaw and recurved dentition are adaptations for seizing prey in open water or from below. It is not a bottom-foraging omnivore in the manner of many catfishes; instead it is an active predator that intercepts or ambushes fish-sized prey.

In the aquarium it will accept frozen fish (such as smelt or lance fish), large frozen invertebrates, and with patience, meaty prepared foods — but live or dead whole fish are its preferred and most reliably accepted diet. Feeding largely takes place in dim conditions or after dark, consistent with the nocturnal tendencies of most silurids. Smaller fish companions are at serious risk of predation; only tankmates of comparable size or larger should be housed with it. Weaning juveniles from live food onto frozen or prepared alternatives requires persistence.

Mating

Wild mating behaviour in Belodontichthys truncatus has been documented at a population level through genetic studies of the Mekong Basin population (Hindawi, 2017). Adults undertake upstream breeding migrations in June and July, moving through fast-flowing reaches and entering flooded forest habitat during peak rainy season to spawn. This seasonal, migratory spawning pattern is typical of large Asian silurids and is driven by river hydrology and flood pulses.

No successful aquarium breeding of this species has been reported. The scale of its spawning migration — navigating hundreds of kilometres of major river systems, relying on specific flood conditions and flooded-forest habitat — makes replication in captivity essentially impossible with current techniques. Sexing is not reliably established from external characters in aquarium specimens.

Breeding

Belodontichthys truncatus is not bred in aquaria. Its reproduction is tied to large-scale seasonal river floods and upstream migrations through major rapids — conditions that cannot be replicated in a home or commercial aquarium setting. The flooded-forest spawning habitat it uses seasonally in the Mekong has no practical equivalent in captivity.

All fish available in the ornamental trade are wild-collected from the Mekong and Chao Phraya drainages. This dependence on wild collection makes responsible sourcing relevant; buyers should confirm that fish have been sourced legally and sustainably given the species' naturally limited availability and its role in local river food webs. There is no captive-breeding programme known for this species.

In the aquarium

Belodontichthys truncatus is an expert-only species that demands a genuinely large aquarium. At 23.5 in standard length as an adult, it requires a tank of at least 1,0.5 US gal — and considerably more for long-term maintenance — with strong filtration, good oxygenation and regular large water changes. It is a midwater swimmer and an active predator, not a retiring bottom-dweller, so open swimming space is as important as the footprint. Dim lighting, floating plants or overhead cover, and minimal daytime disturbance suit its nature.

As a scaleless silurid it is highly sensitive to copper and to many standard anti-parasitic and antibacterial treatments. Half-dose or lower concentrations are advised when medication is unavoidable; always remove carbon and follow a conservative protocol. Do not net this fish — the stiff pectoral spines lock erect and tangle readily in mesh, risking injury to both fish and keeper. Move it in a rigid container or with a large soft bag.

Compatibility is severely limited by its piscivory: any fish that fits in its mouth will eventually be eaten, and it should be housed only with fish of equal or greater body size. It is rarely available and commands a high price when it does appear; hobbyists considering it should research a reliable supply of suitably sized frozen prey food before purchase.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Belodontichthys truncatus as Least Concern (2022 assessment), noting no major documented threats and a reasonably widespread distribution across suitable habitat in the Mekong and Chao Phraya systems.

Nonetheless, its dependence on intact river hydrology and on seasonal flood pulses for spawning migrations makes it vulnerable to the suite of pressures affecting large Mekong fish: hydropower dam construction (which blocks upstream migrations and alters flood timing), habitat degradation in flooded-forest zones, and the broader decline of large-bodied fish assemblages from commercial fishing. Population genetic work confirms that the Mekong Basin population shows structuring consistent with limited mixing between sub-populations. All aquarium specimens are wild-caught, so collection adds a minor additional pressure; the aquarium trade demand is low given the species' rarity and care requirements.
