Taxonomy & naming
Pangasianodon hypophthalmus was described by the French ichthyologist Henri Émile Sauvage in 1878, originally placed in the genus Pangasius. The Catalog of Fishes treats Pangasianodon hypophthalmus as the valid combination; the species was separated into the distinct genus Pangasianodon alongside the closely related giant Mekong catfish Pangasianodon gigas on the basis of tooth morphology and other anatomical details. The family Pangasiidae (shark catfishes) is an exclusively Asian group of large, scaleless, open-water catfishes confined to South and Southeast Asia.
Synonyms include Pangasius hypophthalmus, the combination still widely used in aquaculture literature, and Helicophagus hypophthalmus, reflecting older rearrangements. Aquarists and the fish trade use the name Pangasius almost universally, and "pangasius" is the commercial designation for the flesh sold frozen worldwide under names such as basa or swai. The epithet hypophthalmus is Greek for "low-eyed" (hypo-, beneath + ophthalmos, eye), referring to the noticeably low position of the eye on the head.
Morphology
Juveniles are slim, silver-bodied fish with a sharply forked caudal fin, a pointed snout and a body plan that genuinely recalls a miniature shark — hence the trade name. Young fish carry a bold black stripe along the lateral line and a secondary stripe below it, both fading as the fish grows; adults are uniformly grey to dark silver with white to cream underparts. The skin is completely scaleless and smooth, with no plates or tubercles.
Maximum recorded standard length is 51 in (FishBase), with weights to 44 kg. Three pairs of short barbels are present, as in most pangasiids. The dorsal and pectoral fins bear rigid, serrated locking spines — they lock erect in a retracted position and require care to disengage; a large specimen handled carelessly can cut the keeper's hand. These spines are not venomous in this species, but the mechanical hazard is real.
Habitat
The iridescent shark is native to the Mekong, Chao Phraya and Maeklong river systems, spanning Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. It is a migratory, mid-water, open-river species that moves upstream in late spring and early summer to spawn, then moves back downstream as water levels fall. It inhabits large river channels and floodplain areas, often in turbid, warm water with moderate to strong current.
Natural water parameters reflect large lowland tropical rivers: temperatures typically 79–86 °F, pH broadly neutral to slightly alkaline (approximately 6.5–7.5), and dissolved oxygen levels sustained by river flow. The fish is not a still-water or blackwater species. Turbidity is tolerated; the low eye position is consistent with foraging in murky conditions near the substrate in open channels.
Feeding
Young iridescent sharks are active predators of invertebrates, taking earthworms, bloodworms, brine shrimp and small aquatic insects. As they grow, the diet broadens considerably: adults are opportunistic omnivores that take fish, prawns, mussels, krill, silversides and other meaty foods, but also readily consume vegetable matter — spinach, peas, Spirulina-based pellets and ripe fruit are all accepted.
In the aquarium, juveniles adapt easily to commercial pellets, frozen bloodworm and earthworms; adults need large, high-protein foods such as frozen prawns, mussels and whole feeder fish, supplemented with plant matter. The key behavioural point is that any fish or invertebrate small enough to fit in the mouth will be eaten. Tankmates must be selected on size alone — companions that fit in the catfish's mouth are future meals, not tank-mates.
Mating
In the wild, Pangasianodon hypophthalmus is a long-distance migrant that travels upstream in late spring and early summer to spawn in the upper Mekong and its tributaries, cued by rising water temperatures and the onset of the monsoon-driven flood pulse. Sexually mature fish require the physical and hydrological conditions of a large river: space to migrate, specific thermal and photoperiod cues, and the full river flood cycle.
These conditions cannot be replicated in any home aquarium. Fish typically reach sexual maturity at several years of age and at sizes — often 23.5 in or more — that far exceed what home systems can accommodate. No credible accounts of spontaneous home spawning exist; the mating system is simply inaccessible at aquarium scale.
Breeding
Commercial aquaculture of Pangasianodon hypophthalmus is one of the largest freshwater fish farming operations in the world, particularly in Vietnam's Mekong Delta, where millions of tonnes are produced annually for export. Breeding on farms is achieved through hormone-induced spawning: captive broodstock are injected with pituitary extract or synthetic hormones (HCG, LHRHa) to trigger ovulation and spermiation, eggs are stripped and fertilised artificially, and larvae are raised in hatcheries.
This is emphatically not a fish that breeds in home aquaria. The fish grows far too large for any realistic home system, the migratory spawning migration cannot be replicated, and hormone induction requires veterinary-grade intervention. Keepers should treat this species as non-breeding in captivity outside of commercial aquaculture facilities.
In the aquarium
The iridescent shark is one of the most consequential size-trap species in the tropical fish trade. Sold as glittering 2–4 in juveniles, it reliably reaches 23.5–35.5 in even in aquaria where space constrains its growth, and 47–51 in given adequate room. The minimum realistic tank volume for a single adult is around 1,25 US gal, and a school — this is a highly social schooling fish that becomes extremely skittish when kept alone or in small groups — demands considerably more. Most buyers discover the size problem only after the fish has outgrown three successive tanks.
Beyond size, two biological facts govern care. First, the skin is completely scaleless, making the fish sensitive to copper-based medications and many broad-spectrum treatments; halve the stated dose as a starting point and watch for stress responses. Do not net this fish — move it in a container. The locking pectoral spines tangle instantly in mesh and the fish's powerful thrashing can injure both fish and keeper. Second, the species is a schooling open-water fish with a very strong flight response: solo individuals or small groups in undersized tanks repeatedly slam into glass when startled, causing head injuries and scale loss. A dim tank with open mid-water swimming space and a secure, heavy lid helps, but there is no substitute for scale.
For those with pond space or very large systems, the fish is otherwise undemanding: robust, adaptable to a wide range of water conditions within the tropical neutral range, and tolerant of tankmates too large to swallow. It is an interesting and long-lived fish — specimens have lived well over 20 years in zoological collections — but it belongs in a public aquarium or a large outdoor pond, not a domestic living room.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Pangasianodon hypophthalmus as Endangered. Despite its global ubiquity as an aquaculture product, wild populations across the Mekong and Chao Phraya systems have suffered severe range contraction and declining abundance from overfishing, habitat modification and dam construction along the Mekong. The fish's reliance on long upstream migrations to spawn makes it especially vulnerable to barriers: hydropower dams block access to spawning grounds and alter the flood cues that trigger migration.
The species is economically vital — pangasius fillets are among the most traded fish products globally, and the aquaculture industry supports hundreds of thousands of livelihoods in Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. That economic importance has, paradoxically, reduced pressure on wild stocks for food but increased it through broodstock collection: commercial farms rely on wild-caught individuals to replenish their breeding populations. GBIF records document ongoing range contraction and depletion. The USGS has assessed it as an invasive risk in North American freshwaters, where individuals released from aquaria have been recovered; responsible disposal (never into open water) is essential.
