Taxonomy & naming
Hemibagrus nemurus was originally described by Achille Valenciennes in 1840. Through much of the 19th and early 20th centuries it circulated in the literature under the names Macrones nemurus and, more commonly, Mystus nemurus — older synonymies that still appear in pre-1970 aquarium and fisheries texts. The genus Hemibagrus was separated from Mystus as molecular and morphological evidence accumulated to show that the large Asian bagrids formed a distinct lineage; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) now treats Hemibagrus nemurus (Valenciennes, 1840) as the valid combination, placing the species within the family Bagridae.
The genus name Hemibagrus combines the Greek hemi- (half, partial) with Bagrus, the older nominal genus for large Asian and African catfishes, reflecting the intermediate position these large Asian species were once thought to occupy. The specific epithet nemurus derives from the Greek nema (thread) and oura (tail), likely alluding to the elongate filamentous extension of the upper caudal lobe conspicuous in juveniles and young adults.
Morphology
Hemibagrus nemurus is a classically built bagrid: a broad, depressed head, an elongate and laterally compressed body behind the dorsal fin, a tall spinous dorsal, a long adipose fin, and a deeply forked caudal fin whose upper lobe carries a filamentous extension in younger fish. The skin is entirely scaleless — naked, smooth, and unarmoured — a point of critical importance for medication. Three pairs of barbels adorn the head: one long maxillary pair extending well past the pectoral base, and two shorter mandibular pairs.
The dorsal and pectoral fins each carry a stout, serrated, locking spine. These spines can be held rigidly erect by a locking mechanism and do not bend back passively — they snag nets and can deliver a painful puncture wound to any keeper who handles the fish carelessly. Although Hemibagrus nemurus is not documented as venomous, the spines cause significant mechanical injury and should be treated with respect; the fish should always be moved in a container, never netted.
Colour is generally olive to grey-brown above, shading to cream or white on the belly, with no bold markings in adults; juveniles may show faint lateral banding. Adults recorded at 23.5–39.5 in SL are robust, barrel-bodied fish weighing several kilograms.
Habitat
This species occupies the large lowland and mid-elevation rivers of mainland Southeast Asia: the Mekong, Salween, Irrawaddy, Chao Phraya and associated drainages, ranging across Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam and Bangladesh. It is a riverine fish of flowing water, found over sand, gravel and mud substrates in river channels, floodplain lakes and reservoirs.
Water conditions across its range are warm and broadly neutral to slightly acidic: temperature 75–82 °F, pH approximately 6.5–7.2, with soft to moderately hard water — typical of the large tropical rivers draining the Indochinese and Indo-Burmese highlands toward the sea. It is not a blackwater or swamp species; it prefers well-oxygenated, flowing river conditions with moderate current.
Hemibagrus nemurus is predominantly nocturnal, resting in deeper pools or beneath submerged structure by day and moving to hunt in shallower water after dark. Large adults may move considerable distances within river systems and are targeted by commercial and artisanal fisheries across the region.
Feeding
Hemibagrus nemurus is an unambiguous piscivore and large-prey predator. In the wild it takes fish, large aquatic invertebrates, frogs, and any other animal matter it can overpower and swallow. It is an opportunist that feeds primarily by ambush at night, using its barbels to detect prey in low light and turbid conditions.
In the aquarium it takes large meaty foods readily: whole fish (feeders or thiamine-rich species), raw prawn, earthworms, large pellets designed for predatory catfish, and fish fillets. Feeding live fish exclusively is generally discouraged on animal welfare grounds and because of disease risk; most specimens accept dead and frozen food without difficulty once settled. The critical husbandry point is that any fish or invertebrate small enough to fit in its mouth will be eaten — tankmates must be genuinely too large to swallow, and that bar rises as the fish grows.
Mating
In the wild, Hemibagrus nemurus breeds seasonally, with spawning linked to the monsoon-driven flood pulse of its river systems. Like most large bagrids, it is thought to scatter adhesive eggs over the substrate in flowing or recently flooded water, with spawning behaviour and any mate-guarding activity driven by seasonal water-level and temperature cues. Reliable published accounts of courtship in this species are sparse, consistent with a fish whose enormous adult size and commercial value have attracted fisheries research rather than aquarium-behavioural study.
Sexual dimorphism is not pronounced; females are generally fuller-bodied when gravid, but there is no strong external marker to distinguish the sexes in routine observation. Determining sex outside the breeding season is therefore difficult.
Breeding
Hemibagrus nemurus is not bred in the home aquarium. Reproduction in this species is achieved commercially through hormone induction — injections of pituitary extract or synthetic gonadotropin-releasing hormone analogue (GnRHa) administered to broodstock held in pond or raceway facilities in Thailand, Vietnam and other range countries. The species is an important food fish and is farmed extensively using these induced-spawning techniques; it is not a candidate for home breeding due to its adult size, the space required to hold broodstock in breeding condition, and the need for hormonal stimulation.
Eggs are adhesive and demersal; larvae develop quickly in warm water and are reared commercially on live zooplankton, then graduated to pelleted feeds. Any aquarist keeping this species should treat it as a non-breeding display animal and plan for its adult dimensions from the outset.
In the aquarium
The single most important fact about keeping Hemibagrus nemurus is the adult size. Juveniles of 1–2 in are sold routinely in the tropical fish trade, but they will grow to at least 23.5–31.5 in SL under good aquarium conditions, and wild fish exceed 39.5 in. A minimum tank for a juvenile is around 55 US gal, but any fish approaching adult size needs 105–160 US gal as an absolute minimum and will genuinely fare better in an indoor pond or public aquarium setting. Buyers must plan for this from day one; rehoming a 27.5 in predatory catfish is not straightforward.
As a scaleless fish, Hemibagrus nemurus is more sensitive to copper-based medications and many antiparasitic treatments than scaled species. Follow the conservative dosing approach used for loaches, puffers and eels — typically half the standard dose — and monitor closely. The locking pectoral and dorsal spines are a serious hazard when handling: never use a net, which the spines will immediately tangle in. Move the fish using a large container; even a small specimen can deliver a painful wound.
This is a nocturnal species that appreciates hiding places — large PVC pipes, overturned flower pots, or robust cave structures. It spends most of the day sheltering and becomes active after dark. Water should be kept warm (75–82 °F), at a broadly neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.5–7.2), and well filtered and oxygenated to match the flowing-river conditions of its natural habitat. It is a heavy bioload feeder, so powerful mechanical and biological filtration is non-negotiable. Tankmates must be fish too large to swallow — robust, large cichlids, other large catfish, or similarly sized predators; any small fish or invertebrate will be eaten.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Hemibagrus nemurus as Least Concern in 2020, reflecting its wide distribution across multiple large river systems in Southeast Asia and its tolerance of a range of riverine conditions. Population trends are considered stable overall across this broad range.
Nonetheless, the species faces localised pressures. It is extensively targeted by commercial and artisanal fisheries as a valuable food fish throughout Southeast Asia, and habitat degradation — damming of large rivers for hydroelectric power, sedimentation from deforestation, and floodplain modification — reduces the connectivity and quality of river habitat across its range. The aquarium trade draws on wild-caught juveniles, adding a smaller but present additional pressure. Large-scale aquaculture of the species in Southeast Asia partially offsets collection from wild populations for food, though the aquarium supply remains largely wild-sourced.
