Taxonomy & naming
Callichthys oibaensis was described by the Colombian ichthyologist Carlos DoNascimiento Ardila Rodríguez in 2006, in the journal Dahlia (Revista de la Asociación Colombiana de Ictiólogos), from specimens collected in the Oibita River, a tributary of the Suárez River in the Magdalena basin, Santander Department, Colombia. It sits in the family Callichthyidae, the armored catfishes, within the subfamily Callichthyinae that also holds Hoplosternum, Megalechis and Dianema — the non-cory branch of the family, distinct from the much larger and more familiar Corydoradinae.
The species epithet oibaensis follows the standard Latin locality-suffix convention, marking the fish as "of the Oibita" — its only known river. Ardila Rodríguez separated it from its congeners, principally the widespread Callichthys callichthys, on vertebral counts and cranial morphological details laid out in the original description. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Callichthys oibaensis as a valid, distinct species, and it is not to be confused with any dwarf or juvenile form of C. callichthys.
Morphology
Callichthys oibaensis carries the unmistakable armored-catfish build shared by its genus: two overlapping rows of bony plates (scutes) running the length of the flanks in place of true scales, a somewhat flattened head with a pair of long maxillary barbels, and stout, serrated, locking spines leading the dorsal and pectoral fins. Despite the bony armor, the skin lacks true scales, which matters for medication dosing (see "In the aquarium").
This is a genuinely small catfish. The type series gives a size range of roughly 2.5–3 in standard length (2.5–3 in), making it the smallest species so far described in Callichthys — a genus whose better-known members, such as C. callichthys, commonly reach well beyond 6 in. Colour is typical for the group: an olive-to-brown body with the bony plating giving a faintly ridged, armored texture rather than smooth skin.
Habitat
The species is known only from the Oibita River, a tributary of the Suárez River within the greater Magdalena River basin of Santander Department, Colombia — a single-river endemic. Armored callichthyids of this group typically inhabit slow-moving, often vegetated margins, backwaters and floodplain habitats where dissolved oxygen can run low, especially at the height of the tropical dry season.
Like other Callichthyinae, C. oibaensis is an obligate air-breather: it gulps atmospheric air at the surface and absorbs oxygen through a vascularized section of its hindgut, a trait that lets it persist in stagnant, oxygen-depleted water where gill-only fish cannot survive. Specific published water chemistry for the Oibita River was not found in the sources reviewed; Magdalena-basin tributaries at this elevation are generally warm, tropical freshwater, and soft-to-neutral conditions are typical for the region, though this should be treated as a reasonable inference rather than a measured value for this exact river.
Feeding
As in other Callichthyinae, Callichthys oibaensis is best understood as a nocturnal benthic omnivore, foraging over the bottom mostly after dark for aquatic invertebrates, detritus and other small food items rather than hunting by sight in open water.
In the aquarium this translates into a fish that does well on sinking pellets, small frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp) and other prepared foods offered once the lights are out, so a small, unassuming bottom-dweller is not simply out-competed by faster, sight-feeding tankmates during the day.
Mating
Detailed courtship observations specific to Callichthys oibaensis were not found in the sources reviewed. Armored callichthyids in this subfamily are surface bubble-nest builders, and courtship in the group generally involves the pair (or a male and several females) associating near the nest site as the male begins constructing his bubble-raft, typically beneath a broad leaf, piece of floating cover or against the surface film.
Breeding
Callichthys oibaensis follows the breeding pattern typical of its genus and subfamily: a bubble-nest builder. The male blows a raft of mucus-coated bubbles at the water's surface, often anchored beneath a leaf or other floating cover, and the eggs are deposited into this nest once spawning occurs. From that point the male alone guards and tends the nest and developing eggs, fanning and defending them until the fry disperse.
This places C. oibaensis among the minority of catfish in this atlas that are genuinely breedable in a home aquarium, rather than requiring hormone induction or commercial-scale farming. No specific captive-breeding reports for this exact species were found in the sources reviewed, but the mode can be inferred with confidence from its close relatives in Callichthys, Hoplosternum and Megalechis, all of which are well documented bubble-nesters with sole male parental care.
In the aquarium
Because C. oibaensis tops out at roughly 2.5–3 in SL, it avoids the size trap that catches keepers of many larger armored catfishes — this is a genuinely small, manageable species rather than one that outgrows a home tank. Still, provide a soft substrate the plated body won't abrade against, plenty of cover and leaf litter or broad-leaved plants near the surface to support bubble-nest building, and a tight-fitting lid, since air-breathing callichthyids will use any gap to reach atmospheric air and can be surprisingly athletic jumpers.
Two care notes apply generally to this genus and should be treated as cautionary defaults for this species: the bony-plated but ultimately scaleless skin makes it more medication-sensitive than scaled fish, so dose copper-based and other treatments conservatively; and the locking, serrated dorsal and pectoral spines can snag in a net, so it is safer to move this catfish in a container rather than netting it. As an obligate air-breather it will regularly visit the surface to gulp air — normal behaviour, not a sign of distress, provided the surface is accessible.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Callichthys oibaensis as Near Threatened, with the assessment dated 2014. As a species known only from the Oibita River, a single tributary of the Suárez River in the Magdalena basin, its entire range is extremely restricted, which leaves the population exposed to any localized habitat degradation, pollution or hydrological change within that one river system.
The Magdalena basin as a whole faces heavy pressure from agriculture, urbanization and altered flow regimes, and single-river endemics like this one have essentially no capacity to recolonize from elsewhere if their home stream is degraded. The species is not established in the aquarium trade in any documented way; its conservation significance rests entirely on the health of the Oibita River itself.
