Taxonomy & naming
Callichthys fabricioi was described in 1999 by the Colombian ichthyologists César Román-Valencia, Ramiro Lehmann A. and José Iván Muñoz. It belongs to the family Callichthyidae — the armored catfishes — and specifically to the subfamily Callichthyinae, the non-cory, non-pleco lineage that includes the type genus Callichthys as well as Hoplosternum, Megalechis and Dianema. The Catalog of Fishes treats Callichthys fabricioi as a currently valid species.
The genus name Callichthys comes from the Greek kallis ("beauty") and ichthys ("fish") — a beautiful fish. The species epithet fabricioi is a personal dedication, honouring a naturalist named Fabricius. Callichthyidae as a family goes back to Bonaparte's 1835 classification of the armored catfishes, animals defined by rows of bony plates rather than true fish scales.
Morphology
Like other members of its genus, Callichthys fabricioi is armored rather than scaled: overlapping rows of bony plates (scutes) run along the flanks in place of true scales, the hallmark of the family Callichthyidae. This species reaches a modest maximum size of about 5 in standard length — small enough for a home aquarium, but a real adult size that should be planned for rather than assumed away.
As in its relatives, the pectoral and dorsal fins carry stiff, serrated spines that lock in the erect position, a genuine defence against predators and a hazard for the aquarist's net. The plated skin lacks the mucous-rich scaled covering of most fish, which has a direct care consequence: this is a med-sensitive fish, and copper-based or other harsh medications should be dosed conservatively.
Habitat
Callichthys fabricioi is endemic to the Cauca River basin in Colombia, part of the trans-Andean upper Magdalena River system. It is a freshwater species restricted to this relatively small geographic area, which is also the basis of its conservation concern.
Like other Callichthyinae it is an obligate air-breather, able to gulp atmospheric oxygen at the surface via a modified, vascularized gut — an adaptation that lets it survive in warm, slow-moving, sometimes oxygen-poor water typical of floodplain streams and backwaters. Specific published water chemistry for this species is sparse; aquarists should default to the warm, stable conditions documented for the genus (see Facts) rather than assuming particular pH or hardness figures not confirmed for fabricioi itself.
Feeding
Callichthys fabricioi is a nocturnal benthic omnivore, foraging along the bottom mainly after dark for aquatic invertebrates and detritus, in keeping with the well-documented foraging habits of the genus Callichthys.
In the aquarium it should take sinking pellets, frozen foods such as bloodworm, and live foods like earthworms without difficulty, following the pattern established for its relative C. callichthys. Because it feeds primarily at night, offering food after the lights go out helps ensure it is not out-competed by more active daytime tankmates.
Mating
Detailed courtship behaviour has not been specifically documented for Callichthys fabricioi, but the genus Callichthys is known for a distinctive floating bubble-nest strategy, and there is no reason to expect this species departs from it. In related Callichthys, the male builds a raft of mucus-bound bubbles at the surface, often incorporating bits of plant material and frequently sited beneath a broad leaf or other overhead cover.
The female is drawn to the nest to spawn, releasing eggs that the male fertilizes and works into the bubble raft. Genus-wide, clutches in the range of 100 to 150 eggs have been reported for spawning Callichthys, though this has not been confirmed specifically for fabricioi.
Breeding
Callichthys fabricioi is a bubble-nest builder in the pattern typical of its genus — one of the few catfish groups covered here that is genuinely breedable in a home aquarium. The male constructs and then guards a floating bubble-nest at the surface, and once eggs are deposited in it he stands watch, fanning and defending the clutch until the fry hatch and become free-swimming.
A well-planted aquarium of reasonable size (35.5 in or larger, following genus norms) with warm, stable water gives the best chance of a spontaneous spawn. Because specific breeding accounts for fabricioi itself are not available, aquarists attempting it should treat the genus's known bubble-nest routine as the template and expect broadly similar behaviour, while recognising that data on this particular species remains sparse.
In the aquarium
At a modest maximum of about 5 in SL, Callichthys fabricioi is a manageable size for a home tank, but that adult size — not the size of a juvenile at the shop — should set the tank plan; undersizing an armored catfish's quarters is a common mistake. As an obligate air-breather it needs regular access to the surface, so the tank should not be filled to the brim, and a tight-fitting lid with an air gap is worth keeping in mind.
Being scaleless and bony-plated rather than scaled, it is medication-sensitive: dose copper-based treatments and other medications conservatively. Its pectoral and dorsal spines lock rigid and can snag in netting or jab the keeper, so it is safer to move this fish in a container than to net it. As a nocturnal forager, it appreciates caves, driftwood or dense planting for daytime cover, becoming most active once the lights go down.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Callichthys fabricioi as Vulnerable, under criterion B1ab(iii) — an extent of occurrence under 5,0 mi² combined with an ongoing decline in habitat quality. That reflects its restriction to the Cauca River basin of Colombia, a relatively small geographic range compared with the far more widely distributed Callichthys callichthys.
Because the species is endemic to a single river system already facing habitat pressure, its long-term outlook is tied closely to the health of the Cauca basin itself — water quality, floodplain integrity and land-use change in the watershed are the relevant concerns. There is no indication in available sources that the aquarium trade is a significant driver of collection for this species.
