Taxonomy & naming
Callichthys serralabium was formally described by Lehmann A. and Reis in 2004, adding a second species to the small genus Callichthys. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Callichthys serralabium as the valid name. The family Callichthyidae — the armored callichthyids — sits within the order Siluriformes and encompasses several subfamilies; Callichthys itself belongs to the non-corydoradine Callichthyinae, which also includes bubble-nest builders such as Hoplosternum and Megalechis.
The genus name Callichthys is from Greek kallos (beauty) + ichthys (fish). The species epithet serralabium is Latin, compounded from serra (saw) and labium (lip), referring to the saw-like serrated free margin of the lower lip that distinguishes this species from the type species, Callichthys callichthys. That lip character is the single most reliable diagnostic feature in the original description.
Morphology
Like all Callichthys, this species carries two lateral rows of overlapping bony scutes along each flank rather than true scales — armour that gives the subfamily its common name. The head is broad and somewhat depressed, the snout rounded, and three pairs of barbels (one long maxillary pair and two shorter, unbranched mandibular pairs) project from the jaws. The serrated lower lip margin is the key diagnostic character; under magnification the lip edge has a saw-toothed profile absent in C. callichthys.
FishBase records a maximum standard length of 6 in, measured in males or unsexed individuals. Standard length (SL) excludes the tail, so total body length in a living fish is somewhat greater. The pectoral and dorsal fins bear stiff, serrated, locking spines — common across armored catfishes — that can lock erect when the fish is threatened and will tangle in a net or jab an unwary keeper. Colouration is typical for the genus: a mid-brown to olive-grey ground with darker mottling on the flanks, pale underside, and no strong pattern elements.
Habitat
The type locality spans the upper Orinoco basin in Venezuela and the lower Negro River basin in Brazil, placing Callichthys serralabium in the broad lowland river systems of northern South America. These are warm, generally soft to moderately soft waters typical of the Orinoco–Amazon border region, subject to seasonal flooding cycles that reshape substrate and water chemistry across the year.
Congener data for Callichthys callichthys — the only other species in the genus and one widely distributed across South American lowland rivers — gives a workable picture of what the genus tolerates: pH 5.8–8.3, hardness 0–30 dGH, temperature 64–82 °F, with brief cold dips to 64 °F possible. The Orinoco and Negro basins are warm-water, often soft and tea-stained environments; Callichthys serralabium appears to share the genus's adaptable water chemistry tolerance, though clean conditions matter more than specific pH targets. Like all callichthyids it can gulp air at the surface to supplement gill respiration — a functional adaptation to the low-oxygen, sluggish backwaters it sometimes inhabits.
Feeding
Callichthys serralabium is a nocturnal benthic omnivore, foraging along the bottom after dark for aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, detritus, and small prey items. Congener accounts confirm this feeding strategy, with C. callichthys documented taking insects, plant matter and small fishes on its nocturnal bottom sweeps.
In the aquarium, the species accepts sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, tubifex, brine shrimp and most prepared bottom foods. A diet with reasonable protein content — earthworms and bloodworm are effective conditioning foods — is important when attempting to bring the fish into breeding condition. Because it feeds predominantly at night, offer food after lights-out in a mixed community so it is not out-competed by diurnal species. Callichthys species will also take very small fish given the opportunity, so tankmates should be sized accordingly.
Mating
Breeding in the genus Callichthys follows a distinctive pattern shared by the armored callichthyid subfamily: the male constructs a floating bubble-nest at the water surface. He blows a raft of mucus-bound bubbles — often beneath a broad floating leaf, a patch of floating plants, or directly at the surface — building a structure that can reach approximately 8 in in diameter and 4 in in height, incorporating plant fragments and bottom material bound with bubble secretions.
During nest construction the male actively chases the female away. Once the nest is complete and the male judges it ready, he allows the female to approach. Courtship follows, and the female deposits eggs that the male transfers into the nest or positions within the bubble mass. A protein-rich conditioning diet of live or frozen invertebrates reliably brings Callichthys into spawning condition; water temperature in the 75–79 °F range is typical for successful spawning, though the genus tolerates a wider band.
Breeding
After spawning, the male takes sole responsibility for the bubble-nest and its contents. He remains beneath or beside the nest, chasing away the female and any other intruders, and tends the eggs until they hatch. This level of paternal care is unusual among catfishes and makes Callichthys serralabium genuinely breedable in a well-managed home aquarium — one of relatively few catfish families where this is realistically achievable.
A dedicated breeding setup for the genus calls for a tank of at least 90 × 30 × 17.5 in, conditioned with floating plants or a broad artificial leaf to anchor the nest, and soft-to-neutral, clean, warm water. A pair or small group should be conditioned on live and frozen invertebrate foods. The male may be removed once eggs hatch, or the female can be separated before spawning if she is continually harassed. Because direct data on Callichthys serralabium spawning are sparse in the hobby literature, breeders may extrapolate from the more extensively documented C. callichthys, whose breeding biology is essentially the same.
In the aquarium
A tank suited to Callichthys serralabium needs to accommodate the real adult size — close to 6.5 in standard length, somewhat more total length — so an aquarium of at least 39.5–47 in is appropriate for a long-term resident; this is not a fish that stays small. The armoured body means the fish is protected from abrasion, but the absence of true scales also means it shares the callichthyid sensitivity to certain medications: copper-based treatments and some organophosphate or malachite-green formulations should be applied at reduced, conservative doses, as with any scaleless catfish.
The locking pectoral and dorsal spines are not merely an inconvenience — they readily tangle in a net and the serrated edges can jab the keeper. Always move the fish in a bucket or container rather than a net. Provide substrate-level cover: smooth or fine sand substrate is ideal (the fish regularly roots through the bottom), along with broad-leaved plants, driftwood, and clay caves for daytime retreat. A tight-fitting lid is advisable, as callichthyids surface-gulp air and are capable of short excursions out of an open tank. Water should be kept clean despite the species' tolerance for variable chemistry; regular water changes and effective filtration are non-negotiable. The fish can be kept with peaceful community species of comparable size; very small tankmates risk predation at night.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Callichthys serralabium as Least Concern in 2020, reflecting no evidence of significant population decline across its known range in the upper Orinoco and lower Negro River basins. Its distribution spans two major South American river systems and two countries — Venezuela and Brazil — suggesting a range wide enough to buffer localised threats.
The broader pressures on Orinoco and Amazon basin fish communities — deforestation and associated sedimentation, agricultural run-off, and increasing hydrological alteration — represent long-term concerns for habitat quality. As a species described only in 2004 and with limited hobby representation, wild-population data remain sparse; most aquarium specimens are likely wild-caught given the scarcity of documented captive-breeding programmes. The LC assessment stands, but the species benefits from ongoing monitoring of its Orinoco and Negro River habitats.
