Taxonomy & naming
Callichthys callichthys was formally described by Carl Linnaeus in 1758 in the tenth edition of Systema Naturae, making it one of the oldest catfish names in the literature. It is the type species of the genus Callichthys Scopoli, 1777, and the namesake of the family Callichthyidae — the armored callichthyids. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Callichthys callichthys (Linnaeus, 1758) as the valid combination; the original description placed it under the genus Silurus.
Callichthyidae is divided broadly into two subfamilies: Callichthyinae, which contains Callichthys along with Hoplosternum, Megalechis, and Dianema; and Corydoradinae, containing the corydoras and their relatives. Callichthys callichthys has accumulated numerous junior synonyms over the two and a half centuries since Linnaeus, including combinations under Silurus, Cataphractus, and Callichthys, reflecting its wide range and the confusion that accompanied early systematic work on South American fishes.
The epithet callichthys is from the Greek kallos (beauty) and ichthys (fish), yielding "beautiful fish" — a name applied both to the genus and to the type species within it.
Morphology
The cascarudo is a medium-sized, powerfully built catfish reaching at least 8.5 in total length (FishBase), with females reported to be somewhat larger and more robust than males. The body is cylindrical and moderately compressed, protected by two lateral rows of overlapping bony scutes on each side — the defining feature of the Callichthyidae. These scutes are not scales; they are dermal bone, and the fish effectively lacks true scales entirely.
The head is broad and flattened, bearing three pairs of barbels: one long pair on the upper jaw and two shorter pairs on the lower. The dorsal fin is preceded by a strong, serrated locking spine; similarly stout, locking spines arm the pectoral fins. These spines can be erected and locked and are sharp enough to injure a keeper or tangle fatally in a net — always handle this fish in a container, never net it directly. Coloration is typically olive-brown to grey on the dorsum, paler below, sometimes with darker mottling, though the pattern is variable across the species' broad range.
Habitat
Callichthys callichthys occurs across cis-Andean South America north of Buenos Aires, encompassing the Amazon and Orinoco basins, the Guianas, Trinidad, and the Paraná-Paraguay drainage. This is one of the widest natural distributions of any callichthyid catfish. It inhabits an extraordinary variety of lowland freshwater environments: slow-moving rivers, oxbow lakes, flooded savannas, swamps, marshes, irrigation ditches, and seasonally inundated forest.
Water parameters span a correspondingly broad range. FishBase records a temperature tolerance of 64–82 °F and a pH span of 5.8–8.3, with hardness from nearly soft to moderately hard (0–30 dH). This is not a specialist of blackwater or of alkaline conditions; it is an ecological generalist. A critical adaptation underpins this versatility: the cascarudo is a facultative air-breather, using a vascularized posterior intestine to extract oxygen directly from atmospheric air. This allows it to survive in stagnant, hypoxic habitats that exclude most other fishes — ditches, drying pools, oxygen-depleted floodplain depressions.
Feeding
In the wild the cascarudo is a nocturnal benthic omnivore. Juveniles feed on rotifers, micro-crustaceans, and insect larvae; adults broaden the diet to include aquatic insects, fish, plant matter, and detritus, foraging over the substrate after dark.
In the aquarium it is straightforward to feed. It accepts sinking pellets, wafers, and tablets, along with frozen and prepared foods such as bloodworms, tubifex, and brine shrimp. Earthworms and other meaty items are particularly relished and play a role in conditioning fish for breeding. Because feeding is primarily nocturnal, offering food after lights-out ensures this fish is not out-competed by diurnal tankmates. It will also consume organic detritus and uneaten food from the substrate, contributing modestly to tank hygiene.
Mating
The mating system of Callichthys callichthys is unusual among catfishes and represents one of the genuine highlights of keeping armored callichthyids. The male is the active architect and defender: when conditioned, he selects a surface site, typically beneath a broad floating leaf or at a sheltered spot near the waterline, and begins blowing a dense raft of mucus-coated bubbles, often incorporating fragments of floating plant material to give the nest structural integrity.
Spawning itself involves the male and female adopting an upside-down position beneath the completed nest, with the male wrapping around or positioning alongside the female. The pair may hold this position for extended periods — up to two hours has been reported — while eggs are released and fertilized. The fertilized eggs are then carefully placed into the bubble-nest by the male, where surface tension and the mucus matrix hold them in place. Clutches typically number 100–150 eggs. Once spawning is complete the female's role ends; the male takes over entirely.
Breeding
The cascarudo is one of the most accessible callichthyid breeders in the hobby. The male guards the bubble-nest vigilantly, fanning the eggs and removing infertile or fungused ones. Eggs hatch in approximately four to six days at typical aquarium temperatures, and the male continues to guard the fry until they are free-swimming.
Conditioning pairs on a protein-rich diet of earthworms, bloodworms, and other live or frozen foods is the standard trigger. A modest water change with slightly cooler water often stimulates spawning in conditioned fish, mimicking the seasonal rains of the South American lowlands. The breeding tank should include floating plants or artificial equivalents to anchor the nest. The male can become territorial during nest-guarding and may harass other tank inhabitants; removing the female and other fish after spawning is advisable. Raising the fry on microworms and newly hatched brine shrimp is straightforward once they are free-swimming and abandon the nest.
In the aquarium
Callichthys callichthys grows to at least 8.5 in total length — this is not a small fish, and the single most important care point is sizing the tank accordingly. A species often acquired as a juvenile, it can outgrow a modest setup within a year; a tank of 47 in or more is appropriate for a single adult or pair, larger for a group. The size trap is the most common failure in keeping this species.
Being an armored callichthyid it lacks true scales; its skin is covered in bony scutes between which bare tissue is exposed. Like other scaleless catfishes it is more sensitive to dissolved copper and to some medications than scaled species — treat conservatively and watch for stress responses. The locking pectoral and dorsal spines are genuinely hazardous: never net this fish directly; always transfer it in a container. The spines can pierce a net, trap the fish fatally, and injure the keeper.
The cascarudo is a facultative air-breather and must have unobstructed access to the water surface at all times — a tightly sealed lid that prevents surfacing is dangerous. Provide ample cover in the form of driftwood, caves, and dense planting; the fish is primarily nocturnal and will spend daylight hours wedged into a retreat. It is peaceful toward tankmates too large to eat, tolerates a broad range of water conditions (pH 5.8–8.3, 64–82 °F), and is compatible with a wide variety of South American community fish. Regular water changes and good filtration are essential, as for any large benthic omnivore.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Callichthys callichthys as Least Concern in 2020. This reflects its extremely wide distribution across multiple major South American drainages, its ecological flexibility, its tolerance of degraded and hypoxic habitats, and the absence of evidence for a significant population decline.
Its range encompasses some of the most heavily altered freshwater landscapes in South America — agricultural floodplains, urban waterways, irrigation systems — and its ability to breathe air allows it to persist where most other fishes cannot. Some aquarium trade supply is wild-collected, but the species is home-breedable and captive-raised fish are available. Localised populations in smaller or more threatened catchments may face habitat pressure, but at the species level no conservation concern is currently recorded.
