Taxonomy & naming
Chaca chaca was described by Francis Hamilton in 1822, originally from Assam and Bengal in northeastern India; the type locality encompasses the Gangetic lowlands and Brahmaputra drainage. The species belongs to the family Chacidae — a small, isolated family of South and Southeast Asian catfishes with no close relatives among the other siluriform families, sometimes placed near Sisoridae but generally treated as its own lineage. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats Chaca chaca as the valid combination, though older literature placed the fish under Silurus, Doras and other now-rejected genera before the family Chacidae was established.
The genus Chaca contains only a handful of species (including Chaca bankanensis from the Sunda shelf and Chaca burmensis from Myanmar), making it among the smallest catfish genera. The common name 'frogmouth catfish' is shared with C. bankanensis but is most often applied to this species in the trade.
Morphology
Chaca chaca has a deeply distinctive body plan: the head is enormous, broad and square in outline — almost as wide as the fish is long — and the mouth is a cavernous gape that stretches the entire width of the head. The anterior body is strongly depressed (flattened top to bottom); the posterior body is laterally compressed, giving the fish a tadpole-like profile overall. The skin is scaleless and covered instead in a thick, rough, bumpy tegument; the lower lip and parts of the body surface carry small hooklets that grip and anchor prey.
The dorsal spine and pectoral spines are stiff and serrated. The dorsal spine in particular is described as pungent — capable of inflicting a painful puncture wound — though Chaca chaca is not known to carry a venom gland comparable to catfishes such as Heteropneustes. The cryptic grey-brown mottled colouration blends against the sandy or muddy substrates on which the fish rests. Maximum recorded size is 8 in total length (TL) as a typical adult; a 2024 specimen reached 9.5 in TL, establishing that as the current length record (FishBase).
Habitat
Chaca chaca is a native of the soft-bottomed freshwaters of the Indian subcontinent and parts of Southeast Asia. Its range encompasses India (particularly the northeastern states — Assam, Bengal and adjacent lowlands), Bangladesh, Nepal, and extends through the Malay Peninsula into Indonesia. Recorded habitat types include sluggish rivers, beels (seasonal oxbow lakes and floodplain pools), canals and ponds set within grassland, scrubland, deciduous forest and rainforest landscapes.
The species is a strict bottom-dweller, preferring soft sandy or muddy substrates into which it can half-bury itself for camouflage and ambush. The water across its range is soft to moderately hard (reported conductivity and hardness is variable), with pH spanning a wide range of 6.0 to 8.0 documented in the literature. Temperatures are warm tropical to subtropical — typically 72–77 °F through most of its range — reflecting the lowland river conditions of South and Southeast Asia.
Feeding
Chaca chaca is a sit-and-wait ambush predator. Motionless on the substrate, it relies on camouflage and an enormous mouth to engulf small fish, frogs, invertebrates and detritus that pass within strike range. In nature the primary prey is smaller fishes and fry; earthworms, shrimp and aquatic invertebrates are also taken. The fish does not actively forage — it waits.
In the aquarium, wild-caught adults are notoriously reluctant to accept anything other than live food. Small live fish (feeder guppies or similar), live earthworms and live or fresh shrimp are the starting point; some individuals, particularly younger or aquarium-raised fish, can be conditioned over time to accept frozen meaty items (bloodworm, whole shrimp) and occasionally sinking tablet food. Do not expect easy weaning onto prepared foods. Because the fish is nocturnal, feeding is most reliably offered after lights-out; during the day it is almost completely inactive.
Mating
Observations of spawning in Chaca chaca are rare and come almost entirely from controlled aquarium settings. The species is a cavity spawner: recorded spawnings have taken place inside a tube or pipe section (documented accounts describe a narrow-bore tube placed in a bare-bottom tank). The male takes up residence inside the cavity and plays the role of guardian.
There is no documented intromittent organ or internal fertilisation, and no bubble-nest construction. External fertilisation within the cavity is the inferred mode, consistent with the guarding behaviour observed. Sexual dimorphism is subtle at best — the shape of the genital papilla is used to distinguish sexes in related Chacidae, but there is no bold external coloration difference, making pair identification in the aquarium difficult.
Breeding
Spawning in captivity has been documented, though accounts remain uncommon. In the aquarium, a pair or group is provided with a short section of narrow-bore pipe or tubing (roughly 8 inches of PVC or ceramic tube in a bare-bottomed tank is one recorded setup). When spawning occurs the eggs are laid inside the tube and the male takes up guard duty, remaining with the clutch.
Incubation takes approximately 3–4 days, after which the fry are free-swimming within about 7 days. Fry require appropriately sized live food from the outset — their predatory nature and large mouths mean they can take larger prey items earlier than might be expected, but micro-prey (baby brine shrimp, micro-worms) is the standard starting point. Breeding is not achieved with any regularity in the hobby, but these documented cases confirm it is possible under patient, targeted conditions.
In the aquarium
Chaca chaca is a specialist's fish and is not suitable for a general community. Its real adult size — typically 8 in TL, with the largest specimen on record reaching 9.5 in — means it needs a correspondingly sized aquarium, and it will consume any fish small enough to fit inside its enormous gape. It is entirely unsuitable for tanks with small tetras, corydoras, or any fish under roughly 2 in unless they are intended as prey.
The substrate must be soft and deep enough to allow partial burial — fine sand is ideal. The tank should be dimly lit and furnished with caves, overhangs or pipe sections for daytime refuge; this fish spends daylight hours completely motionless, often buried or wedged in cover. Water parameters should be kept in the range of 72–77 °F, pH 6.0–8.0, with soft to moderately hard conditions.
Because the skin is entirely scaleless — covered by thick horny skin rather than true scales — Chaca chaca is sensitive to copper-based medications and many standard fish treatments. As with loaches and puffers, copper should be avoided entirely, and all medications should be dosed at half the standard rate or less. Move the fish in a container, never a net: the stiff pectoral and dorsal spines can tangle badly in mesh and the dorsal spine is capable of inflicting a painful puncture wound. The fish's skin is also reported to lower aquarium pH slightly over time — a minor but real parameter to monitor.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List (2022.2) assesses Chaca chaca as Least Concern. The species is considered to have a stable population across its native range, which spans the lowland freshwaters of northeastern India, Bangladesh, Nepal and parts of Southeast Asia. No major immediate threats to the species as a whole have been identified in the current assessment.
That stability notwithstanding, lowland river and floodplain habitats across South and Southeast Asia face ongoing pressures from drainage, agricultural runoff, deforestation and channel modification, all of which affect the soft-bottomed benthic environments this species depends upon. Aquarium demand is met primarily by wild-collected fish rather than captive-bred stock, given how infrequently the species breeds in captivity; this adds a measure of local collection pressure on some populations.
