Taxonomy & naming
Neolissochilus hexagonolepis was described by the Scottish naturalist John McClelland in 1839 from specimens collected in upper Assam, India. McClelland placed it in what was then a broadly defined genus; it subsequently appeared in older literature under Barbus hexagonolepis, and the genus Acrossocheilus has also been applied historically. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) records the valid current combination as Neolissochilus hexagonolepis (McClelland, 1839), with the parenthetical authority indicating transfer out of the original genus. Researchers consulting older texts or some Indian government fisheries reports may encounter the name Barbus hexagonolepis — it refers to the same species.
The genus Neolissochilus is part of the family Cyprinidae and groups the so-called hill-stream mahseers of mainland and insular Southeast Asia. It should not be confused with the larger mahseer genus Tor, which occupies a related but distinct lineage. Within Neolissochilus, hexagonolepis is among the largest and most ecologically studied species, partly because of its importance to hill aquaculture and sport angling in Northeast India and Bhutan.
Morphology
The copper mahseer is a large-bodied, torpedo-shaped fish built for life in fast water. FishBase records a maximum total length of 47 in and a weight of 11 kg, though most wild fish encountered are considerably smaller; sexual maturity is reached at around 9 in TL. The body is fusiform and laterally compressed, with a large, subterminal mouth suited to picking invertebrates and algae from rock surfaces. As the common name suggests, the scales carry a coppery to brassy sheen under good light, and the name "chocolate mahseer" reflects the darker, brownish cast seen in some individuals or under certain light conditions.
The scales are large and hexagonal in outline — a feature reflected in the epithet hexagonolepis — and arranged in regular lateral rows. Paired fins are well developed and the caudal fin is strongly forked, consistent with a strong-swimming rheophilic fish. FishBase classifies the species as benthopelagic, and field observations confirm it favours the middle and lower portions of the water column in fast-flowing reaches, hugging rocky substrates.
Habitat
Neolissochilus hexagonolepis inhabits fast-flowing hill streams and rivers with rocky or boulder-strewn substrates, clear water, and high dissolved oxygen across an altitudinal range of roughly 50–1,2297 ft. Its native distribution spans the Himalayan foothills of Northeast India (Assam and adjacent states), Bhutan (documented from Samtse, Wangdue Phodrang, and Samdrup Jongkhar districts), Nepal (Chitawan Valley), Myanmar, Thailand, and parts of Malaysia including Sumatra. The type locality is upper Assam.
A study of habitat suitability confirms that the species is tightly associated with cool, pristine, highly oxygenated lotic environments; it is sensitive to sedimentation and loss of water clarity. The seasonal thermal range recorded in the wild spans roughly 55–88 °F, with optimal conditions around 68–77 °F. Fish concentrate at tributary confluences and cascade-broken reaches where current velocity and oxygen remain high. The species is potamodromous, undertaking upstream migrations to spawn during seasonal high-water periods.
Feeding
The copper mahseer is an opportunistic omnivore that exploits the benthos of fast hill streams. It forages for periphyton (algae and biofilm) scraped from rock surfaces, aquatic invertebrates including insect larvae and crustaceans, and organic detritus carried by the current. The subterminal mouth position and robust pharyngeal dentition are consistent with a diet that includes hard substrate material.
Larger individuals shift toward more piscivorous tendencies in some populations, and the species is known to take surface insects during hatches — a behaviour well-documented by anglers in Bhutan and Assam. In aquaculture, juveniles are raised on formulated pellets and supplemented with natural invertebrate food. The species' role as a high-trophic-level consumer makes it an ecological indicator of stream health across the Eastern Himalayan rivers it inhabits.
Mating
Like all barbs, Neolissochilus hexagonolepis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. The copper mahseer is potamodromous, and spawning is timed to seasonal river rises — typically the monsoon-driven high-water period — when fish migrate upstream to faster, higher-altitude reaches over gravel and coarse rocky substrate. A driving male pursues a gravid female through the current, and gametes are released together over the substrate with no nest construction and no territory held beyond the brief act of courtship.
There is no pair bond and no parental involvement beyond the release of eggs and milt. The broadcast-spawning strategy typical of large river barbs and mahseers means that eggs and larvae are subject to the full force of the stream, and survivorship depends on finding sheltered interstitial spaces in the gravel. Adults — including the spawning pair — give no care to eggs or fry.
Breeding
In the wild, spawning is strongly seasonal and tied to the monsoon cycle. Fish ascend to gravelly upstream reaches during peak flow, scatter adhesive eggs over the substrate, and return downstream. Hatched larvae drift downstream and recruit to slower, more sheltered marginal habitats before growing into juveniles capable of holding position in fast current.
In captivity and hill aquaculture, breeding the copper mahseer is challenging because of its size and migratory behaviour. Induced spawning using hormonal techniques (hypophysation with carp pituitary extracts) has been used in hatcheries in Northeast India and Nepal. Naturally spawned fry are nearly impossible to hold safely with adults, as there is no parental care and larger individuals are likely to consume eggs and larvae. Aquaculture programmes focused on this species are considered important for both food security and restocking programmes in depleted rivers of the Ganges–Brahmaputra basin.
In the aquarium
The copper mahseer is not a practical aquarium fish for most hobbyists. Its maximum size — potentially exceeding a metre — and its requirement for cold, fast, highly oxygenated water with pristine clarity place it beyond the reach of all but the largest specialist cold-water systems. Juveniles are occasionally obtained and grow quickly, rapidly outpacing standard aquarium dimensions.
For those with the facilities, the species demands a large, powerfully filtered tank with strong circulation, a temperature in the range of 64–75 °F, near-neutral pH, and a gravel or boulder substrate. It is not suitable for tropical community tanks and should not be housed with small fish it can swallow. Its primary value to the hobby is ecological rather than ornamental: Neolissochilus hexagonolepis is a flagship species for cold hill-stream ecosystems and its aquaculture has informed broader understanding of mahseer biology. Public aquaria and large cold-water specialist facilities occasionally exhibit it as a representative of Himalayan river fauna.
Conservation
Neolissochilus hexagonolepis is listed as Near Threatened (NT) on the IUCN Red List, assessed in October 2009 and published in 2010. The assessment notes a population that is declining and highlights overfishing, habitat loss, pollution, and rising water temperatures as the primary drivers. Projections at the time of assessment suggested the possibility of a greater than 50% population decline over a ten-year horizon if pressures continued unchecked.
The species is a flagship for hill aquaculture in Northeast India and is intensively fished as both a food and a sport fish throughout its range. Dam construction across the Eastern Himalayan river systems disrupts the potamodromous migrations on which natural recruitment depends, and sedimentation from deforestation and road construction degrades the clear, clean spawning habitat on which the species depends. Conservation measures in Bhutan and parts of India include seasonal fishing bans, regulated angling permits, and hatchery restocking programmes. Its high cultural visibility as a game fish has made it a focus of local conservation advocacy, but effective basin-scale protection of the river systems it occupies remains the central challenge.
