Taxonomy & naming
Francis Hamilton described this fish in 1822 as Cyprinus phutunio, naming it after its local Bengali vernacular name. The species subsequently appeared in the literature under several genera — Barbus phutunio, Systomus leptosomus, and Puntius phutunio — all now treated as synonyms or earlier combinations. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the current valid combination as Pethia phutunio (Hamilton, 1822), with the parenthetical authority indicating the species was moved from Hamilton's original genus.
The genus Pethia was erected by Pethiyagoda, Meegaskumbura and Maduwage in 2012 to receive a cluster of small South Asian barbs previously lumped under the unwieldy catch-all Puntius. The new genus takes its name from the Sinhala word pethia, a vernacular term for small cyprinids used in Sri Lanka, though P. phutunio itself is an Indian and Bangladeshi species rather than a Sri Lankan one. The 2012 revision was a major reorganisation that split the old Puntius into multiple genera, and P. phutunio represents one of the northern Indian members of this new arrangement.
Morphology
Pethia phutunio is a very small, slender-bodied barb reaching approximately 1.5 in total length, or roughly 1 in standard length. The body is pale silvery to brassy gold, laterally compressed in the typical barb fashion but more elongate than deep. Two prominent dark vertical blotches define the species' pattern: one positioned just behind the posterior edge of the operculum and a second on the caudal peduncle. A smaller dark mark sits at the anterior base of the dorsal fin, and a fainter bar runs from the posterior dorsal insertion toward the body midline.
Sexual dimorphism is moderate. Males are slimmer and develop more intense colour, particularly red pigment on the ventral fins; females carry yellow rather than red colouration on the ventral fins and become noticeably deeper-bodied when gravid with eggs.
Habitat
The dwarf barb is a lowland fish of slow-moving and standing waters. It occurs in sluggish rivers, backwater channels, ponds, and swamps with abundant algae and aquatic vegetation, typically over substrates of mud and silt. It is found within the lower Ganges and Brahmaputra river basins in the Indian states of Bihar, West Bengal, Orissa, Assam, and Tripura, as well as in Bangladesh, and FishBase also records its presence in Pakistan and Myanmar.
Water conditions in these lowland habitats are warm and moderately soft to moderately hard. Seriously Fish records a temperature range of 70–79 °F, a pH of 6.0–7.0, and a hardness of roughly 54–215 ppm, reflecting the variable conditions of the Ganges delta and associated floodplain systems. This is a fish of dense riparian vegetation and murky, vegetated shallows rather than clear hill streams.
Feeding
Pethia phutunio is a micropredatory omnivore. In the wild it feeds on small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton — supplemented with plant matter and algae picked from the substrate and surrounding vegetation. FishBase records its diet as including worms, crustaceans, insects, and plant material, consistent with the opportunistic feeding strategy typical of small South Asian barbs in vegetated, productive lowland waters.
In the aquarium it readily accepts a range of small foods: micro-pellets, crushed flake, and live or frozen fare such as micro-worm, baby brine shrimp, and daphnia. Offering small invertebrate foods helps bring out colouration in males.
Mating
Like all barbs, Pethia phutunio is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. FishBase notes that spawning occurs during dawn, with fish depositing eggs between plants near the surface. There is no nest, no territorial pair bond, and no parental care of any kind. A receptive male pursues a gravid female through fine-leaved vegetation or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together in brief, pressing contacts.
Colour intensifies in breeding males at this time, with the red ventral fins becoming more vivid in competition with rival males. The eggs are adhesive and settle among plants or on the bottom, where adults will consume them if given access.
Breeding
Pethia phutunio can be bred in the aquarium, though its small size makes close observation necessary. A shallow, densely planted spawning tank with slightly acidic to neutral water matching the species' native conditions (70–77 °F, pH 6.0–7.0) works well. Fine-leaved plants such as Java moss or spawning mops give eggs a place to fall and stick, and a thin layer of mesh or marbles on the bottom can protect eggs from being eaten by the parents.
A well-conditioned group or a selected pair is introduced in the evening; spawning typically occurs in the morning light. Adults should be removed after spawning. Eggs hatch in roughly 24–36 hours at tropical temperatures, with larvae becoming free-swimming a few days later. First foods are infusoria and micro-worm, transitioning to newly hatched brine shrimp as the fry grow. The species' very small adult size means that fry rearing requires particularly fine starter foods.
In the aquarium
The dwarf barb is an excellent species for the nano or well-planted community aquarium, suited to tanks from around 10–15 US gal upwards. Its small size — under 1.5 in — means it should not be housed with larger, boisterous companions. It is a shoaling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six to allow natural behaviour and reduce individual stress. In a group it is active and sociable, spending much of its time in the mid-water and lower water column among vegetation.
Water conditions should reflect the species' lowland South Asian origins: warm (70–79 °F), slightly soft to moderately hard, and near-neutral in pH. Dense planting, subdued lighting, and dark substrate will bring out the best colouration, particularly the red ventral fins of males. Peaceful small companions — other Pethia species, small rasboras, or dwarf loaches of similar size — make the most compatible tankmates. The species is commercially available and is recorded as an aquarium fish in trade.
Conservation
Pethia phutunio is assessed as Least Concern (LC) on the IUCN Red List, the assessment recorded by FishBase as having been made on 20 March 2010. The species is broadly distributed across the lower Ganges and Brahmaputra basins in India and Bangladesh, and no major range-wide decline has been documented.
Nevertheless, the lowland freshwater habitats it occupies — ponds, swamps, and sluggish floodplain channels — are among the most heavily modified in South Asia. Agricultural conversion, drainage for irrigation, urban expansion, and water pollution are ongoing pressures across the Gangetic plain and the Bengal delta. While P. phutunio is not under immediate threat of extinction, the long-term health of its populations will depend on the preservation of functional floodplain and wetland habitats in the region.
