Taxonomy & naming
Pethia canius was described by Francis Hamilton in 1822, based on material from the ponds and ditches of northeastern Bengal — the type locality phrase used in the original account. For most of its taxonomic history the species was carried in the large, polyphyletic genus Puntius, where it resided alongside scores of other South and Southeast Asian barbs until a sweeping revision by Pethiyagoda et al. (2012) broke that assemblage into multiple well-supported genera. Pethia was one of the newly erected genera, receiving the small-bodied, barbel-less Indian and Sri Lankan barbs that share a distinctive combination of characters including a serrated last unbranched dorsal ray and an incomplete lateral line.
The identity of P. canius was confused for many years with that of the golden barb P. gelius, a common and better-known species from the same region, and specimens of the two were misidentified in both scientific and aquarium contexts. Knight (2013) resolved the problem by designating a neotype for P. canius and providing a full redescription that distinguished it from P. gelius and other congeners principally by the strong black caudal-peduncle band, the arrangement of flank blotches, and precise scalation counts.
Morphology
Pethia canius is a small, moderately compressed barb with a maximum recorded standard length of 1 in. The body form is typical of the genus: relatively deep, short-snouted, without barbels, and with a high-profile dorsal-fin origin. The lateral line is incomplete, with only 3–4 pored scales at the anterior end; the full lateral series contains 20–21 plus one scale. Eight predorsal scales are present. The last unbranched dorsal-fin ray is strong, curved, and prominently serrated with 24–27 serrae along its posterior edge — a diagnostic character for both the species and the genus.
Coloration is dominated by three diffuse, dusky blotches on each flank: one just behind the gill cover, a second centred below the dorsal-fin origin, and a third above the anal-fin origin. The most striking marking is a broad black band that wraps around the caudal peduncle and covers scales 17–19. Small black spots occur at the base of the dorsal, anal, and pelvic fins. Females are deeper-bellied and somewhat larger than males; males are less intensively coloured. The dorsal fin has 11 soft rays and the anal fin 8.
Habitat
The species is recorded from Cooch Behar and Nadia districts in West Bengal, northern India, with Hamilton's original type locality described as the ponds and ditches of northeastern Bengal. It is a fish of still to sluggish lowland waters — ponds, drainage channels, and the quiet margins of larger systems — rather than flowing streams or hill rivers.
Water chemistry data from aquarium experience reflects cool, soft to moderately hard conditions: temperatures of 64–75 °F, a pH of 6.0–7.0, and hardness in the range of approximately 18–179 ppm. These figures are consistent with the lotic and lentic habitats of the Bengal plains, where monsoon-driven water bodies can vary considerably in hardness but remain near-neutral. The relatively cool temperature range sets P. canius apart from many tropical barbs and reflects the northerly, seasonally cool climate of West Bengal.
Feeding
Pethia canius is a micropredator, picking small live prey from the water column and the substrate in the manner typical of small Pethia species. Natural prey includes small insects and their larvae, worms, crustaceans, and zooplankton.
In the aquarium the species accepts small live and frozen foods — Daphnia, Artemia nauplii, microworm — alongside good-quality micro-pellets and finely ground flakes. Given its diminutive size, all food items must be proportionately small. Like most small barbs it feeds actively throughout the day and competes well only with other small, non-aggressive tankmates.
Mating
Pethia canius is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner in the typical barb fashion. No nest is constructed and no parental bond is formed. Courtship involves a driving male persistently pursuing a gravid female through fine-leaved plant growth or over the substrate, the pair releasing eggs and milt together in brief bursts of close body contact.
Spawning in a mature aquarium can occur without deliberate intervention. Colour and drive peak in conditioned fish, and the species will spawn in groups as readily as in pairs. Eggs are adhesive and settle among plant leaves or on the substrate, where the adults — characteristic of the family — will immediately begin to eat them if not separated.
Breeding
Controlled breeding of P. canius follows the standard method for small egg-scattering barbs. A shallow spawning tank is set up with soft, slightly acidic water in the cooler part of the species' temperature range (around 68–72 °F), planted with fine-leaved vegetation such as Taxiphyllum or filled with a spawning mop, and fitted with a mesh base or marbles to allow eggs to fall below the reach of the adults.
Well-conditioned fish spawned in morning light will typically scatter eggs freely. The adults are removed immediately after spawning. Eggs hatch in approximately 24–36 hours at 72 °F, and the larvae become free-swimming after a further 3–4 days, at which point they are fed infusoria initially, then microworm and newly hatched Artemia nauplii as they grow. The species' high resilience rating on FishBase (minimum population doubling time under 15 months) is consistent with the moderate fecundity of small, short-generation cyprinids.
In the aquarium
Pethia canius is an uncommon aquarium fish whose small size and timid temperament require a considered approach. It is best housed in a species-only setup or alongside similarly diminutive and peaceful fish; its maximum size of around 1 in makes it vulnerable to displacement and stress in a typical community tank with larger or more boisterous inhabitants. Groups of eight to ten or more allow natural schooling behaviour and reduce timidity significantly.
The tank should be planted, with subdued lighting and slow or absent surface flow — P. canius is a still-water species that does not tolerate strong current and may struggle if water movement is excessive. Soft, near-neutral water in the range of 64–75 °F suits it well; the cooler end of this range is appropriate in temperate fish rooms without heating in summer. The tank must be biologically mature before introduction, as P. canius is sensitive to elevated ammonia and nitrite. Diet of small live and frozen foods supplemented with micro-granules maintains good condition.
Conservation
Pethia canius has not been formally evaluated by the IUCN Red List, and its conservation status remains Not Evaluated (NE). FishBase records a high resilience rating for the species, indicating an inherent capacity to recover from population reductions relatively quickly, but this metric does not substitute for a full range-wide assessment.
The species has a restricted known distribution in West Bengal, confined to a small number of districts in a heavily agricultural and densely populated region of northern India. Lowland water bodies in this area face considerable pressure from drainage and land conversion for agriculture, pollution from agrochemical and domestic sources, and water abstraction. The confusion with P. gelius that persisted for many years may have obscured any distributional data gathered before Knight's 2013 redescription. Until a proper survey of its range and abundance is conducted, the true conservation position of this small barb remains uncertain.
