Taxonomy & naming
Chiloglanis microps was described by the German ichthyologist Hermann Matthes in 1965. It belongs to the family Mochokidae, the African squeakers and upside-down catfishes, within the genus Chiloglanis — a large group of small suckermouth mochokids distributed across sub-Saharan Africa. As with the rest of Siluriformes, older literature on African catfishes sometimes groups species loosely under broad historical genera; Chiloglanis is the currently recognised and stable placement for this species and its close relatives, and the Catalog of Fishes treats Chiloglanis microps as the valid name.
The genus name Chiloglanis derives from the Greek cheilos (lip) and glanis (a catfish), referring to the enlarged, sucker-like oral disc that defines the genus. The epithet microps is Greek for "small-eyed" (mikros, small + ops, eye), describing the reduced eye size typical of small rheophilic (rapids-dwelling) mochokids that rely more on touch and vibration than vision in fast, often turbid water.
Morphology
Chiloglanis microps is one of the smallest members of its genus, reaching only about 2 in standard length — the holotype measured 2 in SL. Like other Chiloglanis it has a flattened head and an expanded, sucker-shaped mouth formed from the lips, used to grip smooth rock surfaces in current rather than to feed by suction alone. The body is naked — Chiloglanis, like most catfishes, has no scales, which is an important consideration for medication (see "In the aquarium").
The eyes are notably small for the genus, matching the specific epithet, and the body is streamlined and somewhat flattened ventrally, an adaptation shared with many rheophilic catfishes for holding station against strong flow. As in other mochokids it carries stiff, serrated spines at the leading edge of the dorsal and pectoral fins; these lock erect and can jab an unwary hand or tangle in a net.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the Lufira River system, a tributary of the Lualaba — the uppermost reach of the Congo River — in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, with its type locality at Kiamakoto on the Lukima River. It is a rheophilic fish, meaning it lives specifically in fast-flowing, well-oxygenated rapids and riffle sections rather than the sluggish backwaters found elsewhere in the vast Congo basin.
The Congo system as a whole spans everything from acidic, nutrient-poor blackwater to neutral or alkaline, nutrient-rich white water, and no specific temperature or pH readings for the Lufira population were found in the sources consulted here. What is well established is the physical character of the habitat: clean, oxygen-saturated, moderately flowing water over rock and gravel, the same conditions its sucker-mouthed body plan is built for.
Feeding
Like other small mochokid catfishes, Chiloglanis microps is a nocturnal benthic omnivore, grazing rock surfaces and the substrate after dark for algae, biofilm, small invertebrates and detritus swept into the rapids. Its sucker mouth doubles as an anchor against the current and a tool for rasping food from rock faces.
No aquarium feeding record exists for this species specifically, but related Chiloglanis in the hobby take small live and frozen foods such as daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworm, along with algae wafers and other greenstuff, offered after lights-out so a shy nocturnal grazer is not out-competed by more active tankmates.
Mating
No description of courtship or spawning behaviour for Chiloglanis microps was found in the sources consulted. As a small, poorly studied rheophilic mochokid restricted to a single river system, its reproductive biology in the wild has not been documented in the literature available here.
Breeding
Chiloglanis microps is not known to have been bred in captivity, and breeding within the genus generally is rare in the aquarium hobby. This is consistent with the pattern across most Synodontis-family mochokids outside the handful of well-studied cuckoo and commercially propagated species: without documented wild spawning behaviour or captive records for this species, no aquarium breeding protocol can be honestly stated. Data is sparse; keepers should not expect to reproduce it at home.
In the aquarium
Chiloglanis microps is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade — it is a narrow-range endemic of a single DRC river system, not a commercially collected or farmed species, so specific aquarium-care experience is very limited. Its real adult size is small, topping out around 2 in SL, but that does not make it an easy community fish: it is a specialised rheophilic grazer that needs strongly oxygenated, flowing water over sand, gravel and smooth rock — a powerful filter or powerhead creating current is essential, not optional, to replicate its rapids habitat.
As a scaleless catfish it is medication-sensitive, so copper-based treatments and many standard medications should be dosed conservatively, as with loaches, puffers and other naked-skinned fish. It also carries locking, serrated dorsal and pectoral spines that can snag a net and jab the handler, so it should be moved in a container rather than netted. Being nocturnal, it will want caves, rockwork or other cover to retreat to by day, emerging to graze after dark.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Chiloglanis microps as Least Concern. It is a narrow-range endemic of the Lufira River system in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and while its known distribution is small, no major population decline or imminent threat has been documented to elevate its status.
Because it is restricted to a single upper-Congo tributary system, its long-term outlook is nonetheless tied closely to the health of that specific river — water quality, flow regime and any future hydrological development in the Lualaba/Lufira catchment are the relevant risks for a rheophilic species with nowhere else to go. It is not part of the aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not a factor for this species.
