Clarias agboyiensis is a West African walking catfish described by David Sydenham in 1980, one of many Clarias species that pack air-breathing lungs, a naked scaleless skin and locking spines into the same familiar Clariidae body plan. It reaches a real adult length of around 11.5 in total length — small for the genus, but still far larger than the juveniles sold in the trade, and well beyond what most home aquaria can comfortably house long-term. In the wild it lives in floodplain rivers and marshes across Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria, growing quickly, breeding communally, and behaving as an opportunistic mid-level predator that will eat anything it can fit in its mouth.

Taxonomy & naming

Clarias agboyiensis was described by David Sydenham in 1980, part of a wave of revisionary work on West African Clarias in the 1970s–80s that sorted a confusing group of similar-looking walking catfishes into distinct species. It belongs to the family Clariidae, the airbreathing catfishes, and to genus Clarias itself — one of the largest and most economically important catfish genera in Africa and Asia, encompassing everything from small stream species to the giant, farmed Clarias gariepinus.

The species epithet agboyiensis references Agboyi, a locality tied to the river system from which the type material was collected, following the common practice of naming West African Clarias for their type locality. As with many Clariidae, older literature and aquaculture reports sometimes lump West African walking cats loosely under the wider Clarias umbrella without distinguishing agboyiensis from its close relatives; the Catalog of Fishes recognizes Clarias agboyiensis as a valid, distinct species within that genus.

Morphology

Like all Clarias, this species has an elongated, cylindrical body, a flattened, bony head, and a long-based dorsal fin that runs nearly the length of the back, paired with a similarly long anal fin — the classic "walking catfish" silhouette. The skin is completely scaleless and covered in a protective mucus layer, and four pairs of barbels around the mouth help it forage by touch and smell in murky, low-visibility water.

Maximum recorded size is 11.5 in total length, with a maximum recorded weight around 178 g — modest by Clarias standards but still a substantial fish. As in other members of the genus, the pectoral fins carry stiff, serrated, locking spines that can jab an unwary hand and readily snag in a net; the dorsal fin lacks a comparable spine but the pectoral spines alone are enough to warrant careful handling. The species also carries the paired suprabranchial (labyrinth-like) air-breathing organs typical of Clariidae, letting it gulp atmospheric air and survive in poorly oxygenated water.

Habitat

Clarias agboyiensis is native to coastal West Africa, recorded from the Ofin River in the Volta system and other coastal rivers of Ghana, coastal rivers of Togo, the Ouémé River in Benin, and in Nigeria from the Ogun, Oshun, lower Niger, Niger Delta and Cross River systems. It is a potamodromous species, moving within fresh water rather than migrating to the sea, and is particularly associated with floodplain ponds and marshes rather than fast-flowing river channels.

As a tropical West African freshwater fish it favors warm water, and its facultative air-breathing lets it tolerate the seasonally stagnant, oxygen-poor floodplain pools and marshes that flood-pulse rivers produce — habitats that would be lethal to most gill-only fish. Specific pH and hardness data are not well documented for this species in the available literature, so keepers should default to moderate, stable tropical freshwater parameters rather than assuming any extreme.

Feeding

This is an opportunistic mid-level predator (trophic level roughly 3.7), not a specialist. In the wild it takes worms, aquatic insects, shrimp and other invertebrates, along with decaying organic matter, and it will readily consume smaller fish it can overpower or swallow whole. Its four pairs of sensory barbels let it hunt effectively after dark and in turbid water where sight is of limited use.

In aquaculture settings it takes pelleted feed enthusiastically — one study using a 1% body-weight daily ration of commercial pellets produced fast growth to over 300 g. In the aquarium this translates into an unfussy feeder that will eagerly take sinking pellets, meaty frozen foods, and live foods, but keepers must remember it is a genuine predator: any tankmate small enough to fit in its mouth is potential food, not company.

Mating

Clarias agboyiensis reaches sexual maturity quickly, spawning within its first year of life, and grows fast enough to reach a substantial size within one to two years. Communal spawning has been observed both in ponds and, less commonly, in river habitat, with the species breeding more readily in floodplain marshes and ponds than in flowing water — consistent with its preference for these still, seasonally connected habitats in the wild.

There is no documented courtship or pairing behavior specific to the aquarium, because this species is not kept or bred as a home aquarium fish. What is known comes from wild observation and aquaculture ponds, where spawning happens communally among groups of fish rather than through the kind of paired courtship display seen in many smaller catfishes.

Breeding

Clarias agboyiensis is, in practice, a farm-bred species rather than a home-aquarium one. Aquaculture operations propagate related Clarias using hormone-induced spawning (a well-established technique across the genus, using synthetic or pituitary hormone injections to trigger egg release), and this species reaches maturity and spawns readily enough in pond culture that captive reproduction is a commercial rather than a hobbyist activity.

No home aquarium breeding has been documented for this species, and none should be expected: adult broodstock require far more space than a typical tank provides, and commercial hatcheries already supply the aquaculture trade through induced spawning rather than natural pairing. Aquarists should not attempt to replicate large-scale Clarias breeding at home; this is fundamentally a pond and hatchery fish when it comes to reproduction.

In the aquarium

The single most important fact for anyone considering Clarias agboyiensis is its real adult size: up to 11.5 in total length. That is modest next to giant relatives like C. gariepinus, but it is still a large, heavy-bodied predatory catfish that a typical community tank cannot house for its full life — juveniles sold small will keep growing, and this is a genuine size-trap species best left to large, dedicated setups or avoided by most home aquarists altogether.

Because it is completely scaleless, it is medication-sensitive in the same way as loaches, puffers and eels — copper-based treatments and many standard medications should be dosed conservatively, often at half strength, and the fish monitored closely during treatment. Its pectoral spines lock rigid and are serrated; they readily snag a net and can jab the handler, so this fish is best moved in a container rather than netted. As a facultative air-breather it needs regular access to the surface — do not seal the tank tightly — and being nocturnal by nature, it appreciates caves or dark cover to retreat into during the day. Any tankmates must be too large to be swallowed, and given that Clarias species are documented invasive fish outside their native range in parts of the world, this fish should never be released into local waterways.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Clarias agboyiensis as Least Concern in 2019. It occupies a reasonably wide range of coastal West African river systems across Ghana, Togo, Benin and Nigeria, and its tolerance of floodplain marsh habitat and facultative air-breathing likely buffer it against some of the habitat degradation that threatens more specialized fish in the same region.

As with many West African freshwater fishes, ongoing pressures across its range include wetland conversion, water pollution and heavy fishing pressure in the Niger Delta and neighboring coastal systems, but no species-specific population decline has been documented that would elevate its threat category above Least Concern at this time.
