Taxonomy & naming
Clarias angolensis was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1866. It belongs to the family Clariidae, the airbreathing or walking catfishes, and to the genus Clarias, a large African and Asian genus of more than 60 species united by an accessory air-breathing organ built from modified gill arches. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Clarias angolensis as the currently valid name.
As with many Clarias, the taxonomy of this species and its close relatives has a history of confusion, since numerous nominal Clarias species from Central Africa have at times been treated as synonyms or varieties of one another. Data on the species remains comparatively sparse, and it is currently assessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN, reflecting how little targeted study it has received relative to its wide Congo basin range.
Morphology
Clarias angolensis has the classic walking-catfish body plan: an elongated, cylindrical trunk, a flattened, bony head, and a long-based dorsal fin that runs almost the length of the back, mirrored by a similarly long anal fin, with no adipose fin. Four pairs of barbels around the mouth (nasal, maxillary and two mandibular pairs) help it locate prey by touch and taste in murky or low-light water.
The species reaches at least 14 in total length. Like all Clariidae it is scaleless, with tough, mucus-covered naked skin rather than scales or bony plates — a trait that makes it, like loaches, puffers and true eels, considerably more sensitive to copper-based and many other medications than scaled fish. It also carries a stout, hardened pectoral spine on each side that can be locked outward and used both defensively and to help drag the body forward during overland excursions.
Habitat
The species is native to the lower and middle Congo River basin in Central Africa, including the Ubangi and Kasai drainages. It occupies slow-flowing and still freshwater habitats typical of Clarias — river channels, floodplain pools, swamps and backwaters — where oxygen levels can fall low enough that its accessory air-breathing organ, which lets it gulp atmospheric air at the surface, becomes essential to survival.
Water chemistry data for the species points to tropical, mineral-rich conditions rather than soft blackwater: reported values span roughly pH 7.0–9.0 with moderately hard to hard water (around 15–40 dH) and temperatures in the low-to-high 20s °C. This places it closer to the general-hardness, neutral-to-alkaline profile typical of many Congo basin floodplain fishes rather than the soft, acidic blackwater associated with some other Central African habitats.
Feeding
Clarias angolensis is a predatory, piscivorous catfish. In the wild it hunts other fish and any invertebrates it can overpower, using its barbels to locate prey after dark and its wide, muscular mouth to engulf it whole. As with all Clarias, virtually anything that fits in its mouth is potential food, including much smaller fish sharing its water.
In captivity it should be offered large, meaty foods — whole fish, prawn and shrimp, and sizeable sinking pellets — scaled up as the fish grows. Because it is an opportunistic predator rather than a specialist grazer, tankmates must be chosen on the basis of size alone: any fish small enough to swallow should be assumed to eventually become a meal.
Mating
Detailed accounts of courtship and spawning behaviour specific to Clarias angolensis are not well documented in the available literature; data is sparse. Across the genus Clarias more broadly, spawning is typically associated with seasonal flooding, with adults moving onto newly inundated floodplain vegetation to release and fertilise eggs, a pattern exploited on fish farms through hormone-induced spawning rather than natural pairing in confined ponds or tanks.
Breeding
This is a large, commercially significant catfish genus, and like other sizeable Clarias, Clarias angolensis is essentially not bred in the home aquarium. Where Clarias species are propagated at all, it is on fish farms using hormone-induced spawning (typically with pituitary extract or synthetic hormone injections) to trigger egg release in ponds or hatchery tanks, followed by artificial fertilisation and larval rearing — a world away from anything achievable in a display aquarium. The species' eventual size alone rules out captive breeding in a typical home setup, and there is no record of it being spawned by hobbyists.
In the aquarium
Clarias angolensis is not a realistic long-term aquarium fish for most keepers, and this should be stated plainly: it reaches at least 14 in and, like other Clarias, is routinely sold as an innocuous-looking juvenile that quickly outgrows all but very large, specialist setups (think many hundreds of litres, heavily filtered, with a secure lid). Fishipedia notes it is rare in the trade and best left to experienced keepers who understand what they are taking on.
Because it lacks scales, dose copper-based medications and many other treatments conservatively — often at half strength — as for other naked-skinned catfish. Handle it with care rather than a net: the locking pectoral spines snag mesh and can jab the handler, so moving the fish in a container is safer for both parties. As an air-breather it must be able to reach the surface, and a tight-fitting lid is essential since Clarias are strong, determined escape artists capable of surviving out of water for extended periods — a trait that has made members of this genus notorious invasive species elsewhere in the world. This fish should never be released into local waterways. Being predatory and nocturnal, it wants dense cover to retreat to by day and is best kept alone or with tankmates far too large to be swallowed.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Clarias angolensis as Data Deficient, an assessment last carried out in 2006. This reflects a lack of dedicated population or trend data across its Congo basin range rather than any specific evidence of decline, which is common for numerous Clarias species that are neither commercially targeted nor closely monitored outside a handful of farmed staples.
As a Congo basin endemic-range species, its long-term status is tied to the health of the lower and middle Congo River system, including pressures such as habitat alteration, pollution and fishing pressure that affect the wider basin. Renewed assessment would help clarify whether current population trends warrant a more precise conservation category.
