Goeldiella eques is a sleek, long-whiskered catfish of the Amazon and Orinoco basins — a monotypic heptapterid that combines the streamlined, pimelodid-like body plan of the riverine South American catfish with the nocturnal, benthic foraging habits typical of its family. Reaching nearly 11.5 in in standard length, it is larger than the typical community catfish and demands respect in the tank-sizing and care departments. Its common trade names — Fox Face Catfish and Horsehead Pimelodella — reflect the distinctly elongated snout that makes it one of the more visually striking members of the long-whiskered catfish alliance.

Taxonomy & naming

Goeldiella eques was described by Johann Andreas Wagner, working from material collected by Johann Baptist von Spix and Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius during their famous Brazilian expedition, but the accepted authorship is that of Müller & Troschel (1849), who formalised the description. It belongs to the family Heptapteridae, a large Neotropical catfish family that was long absorbed within the old, polyphyletic Pimelodidae before molecular work split the assemblage in the early 2000s. Goeldiella is a monotypic genus — G. eques is its sole species — and the Catalog of Fishes treats the current combination as valid.

The species was historically assigned to Pimelodus and Rhamdia before the monotypic genus Goeldiella was erected to receive it. The genus name honours Emil Goeldi, the Swiss-Brazilian zoologist and founding director of the Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi in Belém, one of the foremost natural-history collections in Amazonia. The epithet eques is Latin for 'horseman' or 'knight', a reference to the head profile that gave rise to the trade name Horsehead Pimelodella.

Morphology

Goeldiella eques has the classic heptapterid body: elongated, laterally compressed, with a broad, flattened head that tapers into a slender trunk and a forked caudal fin. The snout is noticeably long and pointed — the fox- or horse-face that defines its common names. Three pairs of barbels extend from the jaws: a long maxillary pair that can reach well past the pectoral fins, and two shorter pairs of mandibular barbels. The dorsal and pectoral fins are armed with stiff, serrated, locking spines; the adipose fin is long and low, typical of the family.

The ground colour is a warm tawny brown to grey-brown, often with a darker mid-lateral stripe running from behind the head to the tail base, and paler underparts. The skin is entirely scaleless — naked and smooth — a character shared across heptapterids and pimelodids that has direct implications for medication sensitivity. Maximum recorded size is 11.5 in standard length (FishBase), which translates to roughly 13.5–14 in total length; this is a genuinely medium-sized catfish, not a dwarf.

Habitat

This species is native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins — two of the largest drainages in South America — where it inhabits the main channels and their larger tributaries. It is a benthic, riverine fish, living on or close to the substrate in the mid to lower reaches of rivers rather than in standing or seasonal floodplain waters.

Wild water parameters from the Amazon and Orinoco main channels and their large clearwater or whitewater tributaries typically span temperatures of roughly 75–82 °F with a pH of around 6.0–7.5; the Amazon system ranges from soft, blackwater tributaries (Rio Negro) to silty, moderately hard whitewater rivers (Rio Solimões), and the Orinoco likewise. The specific water chemistry preferences of G. eques are not well documented in the literature, but a neutral-to-slightly-acid, warm, soft to moderately hard tropical river environment is a reasonable baseline.

Feeding

Goeldiella eques is an omnivorous micropredator. Stomach analyses of wild specimens have found insects, spiders, aquatic insect larvae, and small fish alongside organic detritus — a diet reflecting opportunistic benthic foraging after dark. It is a predatory catfish capable of taking fish small enough to fit in its mouth, and tankmates should be sized accordingly.

In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of foods: sinking carnivore pellets, frozen bloodworm, frozen brine shrimp, chopped prawn, and similar prepared foods. As with most nocturnal catfishes, feeding is most effective after lights-out, when the fish is active and bold and will not be out-competed by diurnal tankmates. Live foods such as earthworms and insect larvae are taken with enthusiasm but are not required.

Mating

The reproductive biology of Goeldiella eques in the wild is poorly documented, and the species has not been bred in aquaria. No first-hand accounts of courtship behaviour have been published for this monotypic heptapterid, and wild data on spawning site selection, pairing, or male–female interaction are absent from the available literature.

Based on the broader heptapterid and pimelodid pattern, and on the structure of the fish — no obvious elaborate fin elaborations or strong sexual dichromatism visible in trade specimens — it is likely a substrate spawner without prolonged parental investment, but this is inference from family-level patterns rather than documented observation. The honest summary is that mating behaviour remains unknown.

Breeding

Goeldiella eques has not been bred in aquaria, and no reliable captive breeding reports appear in the hobbyist or scientific literature. Given the lack of aquarium breeding records and the species' medium-to-large adult size, captive spawning is not a realistic expectation for most keepers. Hormone-induced breeding at farm scale is used commercially for some South American catfishes of this size class, but there are no published accounts of such techniques applied to G. eques.

The breeding mode in the wild is uncharacterised. Based on family (Heptapteridae) precedent, a substrate or cavity spawn with little or no lasting parental care is plausible, but this has not been confirmed for this species. Keepers should not expect home breeding and should treat any wild-collection offspring as replacements rather than captive-produced stock.

In the aquarium

The most important thing to understand about Goeldiella eques is its adult size: at nearly 11.5 in SL this is a medium-sized catfish, and a minimum aquarium of around 80 US gal is the commonly recommended starting point. Many buyers underestimate the eventual size — the size trap is the commonest care failure with this species. Juveniles are slender and relatively small in the trade; adults are robust, wide-bodied fish that need genuine space and strong filtration.

Because the skin is entirely scaleless, G. eques is more sensitive to copper-based treatments and many other medications than scaled fish. Half-dose or conservative dosing is strongly advisable; qt-tank treatment is preferable to whole-tank dosing wherever possible. The locking pectoral and dorsal spines tangle badly in a net and can deliver a painful jab to the keeper — always move this fish in a container or a solid-sided bag, never with a net.

This species is nocturnal and benthic. It appreciates a softish substrate (sand or fine gravel), dim lighting or shaded zones, driftwood cover, and caves or PVC pipe hides for daytime retreat. It is generally peaceful toward tankmates too large to be swallowed but should not be housed with very small fish or invertebrates. Feed after lights-out with sinking foods. Water quality should be warm (75–82 °F), pH in the neutral to slightly acid range, and well-oxygenated with regular partial water changes.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Goeldiella eques as Least Concern in October 2020. The species has a large native range spanning the Amazon and Orinoco basins — two of the most extensive river systems on Earth — and is not currently considered threatened at the range-wide level.

Nevertheless, as a larger catfish collected from South American rivers for the aquarium trade, G. eques is primarily wild-caught; there is no established captive-breeding supply chain. Long-term pressures on Amazonian and Orinocan fish diversity — deforestation-driven sedimentation, river channelisation, hydroelectric impoundments, and rising water temperatures — affect the broader community of which this species is a part, even if G. eques itself is not under immediate pressure. Responsible sourcing from well-managed supply chains remains advisable.
