Bunocephalus verrucosus is a small, warty-skinned banjo catfish from the Amazon basin and Guyana that earns its common name twice over: its flattened head and tapering tail give it the unmistakable outline of a banjo, and its body is studded with lumpy tubercles that earned the species epithet verrucosus — 'warty'. A nocturnal, scaleless bottom-dweller that rarely reaches 4.5 in, it is among the most cryptic fish in the hobby, spending daylight hours motionless under leaf litter or tucked against wood and coming alive only after the lights go out to sift the substrate for food.

Taxonomy & naming

Bunocephalus verrucosus was first described by Johann Julius Walbaum in 1792, originally placed in Silurus as Silurus verrucosus. The species passed through several generic placements before settling in Bunocephalus: synonyms include Platystacus verrucosus, Aspredo verrucosa, and Dysichthys verrucosus — Dysichthys is now treated as a junior synonym and is not a valid genus. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises Bunocephalus verrucosus (Walbaum, 1792) as the valid combination. GBIF records the full synonymy under taxon key 2340604.

Bunocephalus belongs to the family Aspredinidae, the banjo catfishes, a strictly South American group of benthic, flattened catfishes characterised by their strongly depressed head and attenuated, whip-like tail. The family is sister to the Doradidae (thorny catfishes) within Siluriformes. The genus name Bunocephalus derives from the Greek bounos (hill, knob) and kephalē (head), referring to the knobbly, tuberculate head. The species epithet verrucosus is Latin for 'warty', naming the rough, tubercle-covered skin that is the most immediately obvious feature of a live fish.

Morphology

Bunocephalus verrucosus is a small fish, reaching a maximum of around 4 in standard length (FishBase) or roughly 4.5 in total length in practice. The body plan is diagnostic: the head is broad, depressed, and dorso-ventrally flattened, giving way abruptly to a slender, tapering tail that accounts for much of the total length. The whole silhouette from above recalls a banjo. The skin is entirely naked — there are no scales — and is covered with bony tubercles and warty nodules that give the fish a rough, lumpy texture and its specific name.

Three pairs of barbels are present: one maxillary pair and two mandibular pairs, all short. The eyes are small and set high on the head. As in other catfishes the dorsal and pectoral fins carry stiff, serrated, locking spines — these can be locked erect by the fish and are capable of jabbing a careless keeper. There is no known external feature that reliably distinguishes the sexes at a glance, though ripe females may be noticeably deeper-bodied.

Habitat

The species is native to South America: its range spans the Guianas and the Amazon basin. It is a bottom-dweller of slow to moderately flowing freshwaters — rivers, streams, and pools — where it rests on sandy or muddy substrates among fallen leaves, submerged wood, and organic debris. The leaf-litter microhabitat is critical: the fish is so cryptically coloured and so still during the day that it is effectively invisible against dead leaves.

Water conditions recorded from FishBase fall in a neutral to slightly acidic range — temperature 68–75 °F, pH 6.8–7.5, with moderate hardness around 8–15 dH. AquaInfo extends the temperature range to 70–79 °F and pH as low as 5.5 in some waters. This is not a strictly soft-blackwater specialist: neutral, moderately hard water is well within its range. FishBase also flags B. verrucosus as a facultative air-breather — the fish can gulp atmospheric air at the surface when oxygen in the water is low, a useful adaptation for stagnant leaf-litter pools during the dry season.

Feeding

Bunocephalus verrucosus is a nocturnal benthic omnivore with a trophic level of 3.1 (FishBase), placing it as a secondary consumer. In the wild it forages the bottom after dark, picking through substrate and leaf debris for small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans — along with organic detritus.

In the aquarium it is reported as an easy feeder that accepts sinking tablets, fine-grade pellets, frozen bloodworm, and chopped earthworm. Because it is strongly nocturnal and typically motionless and hidden during the day, feeding must be timed for after lights-out; in a community tank with more active, daytime-feeding fish, the banjo will go hungry if food is only offered in the morning. Dropping sinking wafers or pellets into the tank shortly after the lights go off ensures the fish receives its share. It is peaceful and ignores other fish.

Mating

Detailed observations of mating behaviour in Bunocephalus verrucosus are sparse in the published literature. What is known comes mainly from hobbyist reports: the species belongs to Aspredinidae, a family in which some genera are noted for females carrying fertilised eggs attached directly to the ventral skin via specialised fleshy stalks (cotylephores). Whether B. verrucosus exhibits this behaviour or a simpler form of egg-scattering has not been definitively documented in accessible sources.

Sexual dimorphism is subtle at best; females in breeding condition may be fuller-bodied than males. Beyond this, reliable data on courtship triggers, pair formation, and the specific mechanics of spawning in this species remain thin, and hobbyist breeding reports are rare enough that the mating sequence cannot be described with confidence.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Bunocephalus verrucosus has been attempted but is not well documented. A sparse hobbyist note (AquaInfo) mentions eggs reportedly found in floating plant roots, but there is no detailed account of the full breeding sequence, fry development, or reliable method for inducing spawning. Breeding in the aquarium must therefore be described as little known and apparently uncommon.

Given the family-level biology of Aspredinidae, it is possible that female B. verrucosus carry eggs attached to the belly skin — as has been confirmed in related genera — but this has not been confirmed for this species in sources available from the cache. Keepers interested in breeding should condition a group with high-quality live and frozen foods, provide leaf litter and gentle water movement, and watch for changes in female body depth. Success would be genuinely noteworthy and worth documenting for the hobby record.

In the aquarium

Bunocephalus verrucosus is a peaceful, undemanding catfish well-suited to a species tank or a quiet community of similarly sized, non-boisterous fish. AquaInfo recommends a minimum tank length of 31.5 in. Adults reach about 4.5 in total length — it is a small fish, but one that needs floor space for foraging and cover for resting. A soft, fine-grained sandy substrate is ideal: the fish presses itself flat against the bottom and may partially bury into loose substrate during the day. Leaf litter (dried Indian almond or oak leaves), driftwood, and low-light floating plants complete the setup. Lighting should be dim; the fish is essentially invisible and inactive under bright lights.

Two care points are mandatory. First, B. verrucosus is entirely scaleless — its naked skin makes it significantly more sensitive to copper-based treatments, formalin, and many common medications than scaled fish. Dose any treatment conservatively (half-dose is frequently advised for scaleless species) and never use copper treatments without careful calculation. Second, the locking pectoral and dorsal spines tangle readily in a net and can deliver a painful jab; always transfer this fish in a container rather than netting it. The fish is non-aggressive, ignores tankmates, and is harmless as long as it is handled carefully. Water: 68–79 °F, pH 5.5–7.5, moderate hardness. Feed after lights-out with sinking wafers or frozen foods.

Conservation

Bunocephalus verrucosus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessed August 2020). Its range spans the Amazon basin and the Guianas — a vast, still largely intact river system — and there are no known major threats that would justify a higher category.

The species is collected for the aquarium trade, though it is not among the most heavily traded catfishes. Ongoing pressures on Amazonian waterways — deforestation and sedimentation, pollution, dam construction, and climate-driven hydrological changes — are the background concerns for all Amazon basin fish, including this one. Current evidence does not suggest population-level declines, and the aquarium trade in this species is unlikely to be driving any pressure at scale.
