Brachyplatystoma vaillantii is one of the largest catfishes in the Amazon and Orinoco basins, routinely reaching 47–55 in or more in total length and weighing tens of kilograms — a giant that is commercially fished across South America and occasionally imported as a juvenile into the aquarium trade, where it rapidly outgrows all but the largest public or pond-scale facilities. A scaleless, naked-skinned pimelodid, it carries locking pectoral and dorsal spines and is a pursuit predator of fish and large invertebrates throughout the river system. It is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense for the private hobbyist.

Taxonomy & naming

Brachyplatystoma vaillantii was described by Achille Valenciennes in 1840 and belongs to the family Pimelodidae, the long-whiskered catfishes of South America — a family that includes some of the continent's largest freshwater fish. The genus Brachyplatystoma currently holds around a dozen species of giant, commercially important goliath catfishes; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) treats B. vaillantii as the valid name under this genus.

The species has appeared in older literature under a number of synonyms and combinations, including Pimelodus vaillantii and Silurus vaillantii, reflecting the extensive taxonomic revision that Siluriformes has undergone over the past century. The genus name Brachyplatystoma combines the Greek brachys (short) and platystomos (flat-mouthed), though the fish itself is far from small-mouthed; it is a reference to the relative proportions of the head compared to other pimelodids.

Morphology

This is a massive, elongate catfish with the characteristic pimelodid profile: a broad, depressed head, a notably wide gape, three pairs of barbels — long maxillary barbels that can rival or exceed the body in length — and a forked tail on a powerful, streamlined body built for open-water pursuit. Coloration is plain, typically a uniform pale silver-grey to cream on the flanks, with a whitish belly; there is little patterning on adults.

Maximum documented total length is in the range of 47–55 in or greater, with commercial specimens regularly exceeding 31.5 in; fish offered in the aquarium trade are juveniles of 4–8 in that give no indication of their eventual bulk. The skin is entirely scaleless — naked — making this species sensitive to copper-based medications and many other chemical treatments. Stiff, serrated, locking pectoral and dorsal fin spines are present and can inflict painful puncture wounds; the spines lock erect when the fish is stressed and tangle dangerously in a net.

Habitat

Brachyplatystoma vaillantii inhabits the main channels, tributaries and flooded várzea margins of the Amazon and Orinoco river systems, ranging from the tidal-influenced lower Amazon and estuarine zones inland through Peru, Colombia, Venezuela and the Guianas. It is a migratory species, making long-distance upstream spawning migrations — among the longest freshwater migrations recorded anywhere — and juveniles and sub-adults travel downstream toward the estuary, while adults make the return journey upriver to breed.

The preferred environment is the large, fast-flowing main channels of whitewater rivers — nutrient-rich, turbid systems with warm temperatures typically around 75–82 °F and pH values near neutral to slightly acidic (approximately 6.5–7.5). It is not a blackwater or clearwater specialist; its home is the great Amazonian whitewater channels fed by Andean sediments.

Feeding

Brachyplatystoma vaillantii is an active piscivore and apex predator within the mid-water and near-surface layers of large rivers. It pursues and captures fish — primarily smaller characins, cichlids and other species sharing the same river channels — and will also take large invertebrates. Like most large pimelodids it hunts largely by night and at dawn, and its long barbels are sensory tools for detecting prey in the turbid, low-visibility water of whitewater rivers.

In captivity, juveniles and sub-adults accept dead or frozen fish, large prawn and shrimp, and large-grade sinking pellets. Any tankmate small enough to fit in its large gape will be eaten; at adult size there is virtually no freshwater fish that is safe with it. Aquarists keeping juveniles must plan for the fish's rapid growth rate and correspondingly rapid increase in the size of prey it can take.

Mating

Breeding in Brachyplatystoma vaillantii in the wild is associated with the annual flood cycle and long-distance migratory movements. Adults undertake upstream spawning migrations of thousands of kilometres in the Amazon system — one of the most extensive freshwater spawning migrations known — and spawning is believed to occur in Andean foothills tributaries far from the estuarine rearing grounds of the juveniles.

The mating behaviour itself is not closely documented in the scientific literature, but as a large open-water pimelodid, it is presumed to be a pelagic broadcast spawner releasing eggs into the current. The scale and distance of the migration, the size of the fish, and the oceanographic complexity of the journey make natural spawning essentially impossible to replicate outside the Amazon river itself.

Breeding

Brachyplatystoma vaillantii is not bred in home aquaria under any practical circumstances. Its combination of enormous adult size, requirement for long-distance migratory triggers, and the need for induced hormonal spawning places it firmly in the category of commercially farm-bred fish. In South America it is propagated in large commercial fish-culture facilities using hormone induction (hypophysis injections) and artificial fertilisation, producing fish destined for the food market and, occasionally, the aquarium trade.

No home aquarist has the facilities to replicate the conditions — space, migration cues, water temperature seasonality and hormonal induction — required to breed this species. Aquarium specimens should be understood as wild-collected or commercially produced individuals with no prospect of captive reproduction in a private setting.

In the aquarium

Brachyplatystoma vaillantii is effectively not a home aquarium fish. Juveniles are occasionally offered in the trade at 4–6 in, often without any indication of adult size, representing a classic size-trap situation: a purchaser who does not research the species acquires what appears to be a manageable catfish that will reach well over a metre in length and require a public-aquarium-scale tank or outdoor pond in a tropical climate.

For the rare aquarist with genuinely large-scale facilities — concrete ponds of several thousand litres minimum, heated to 75–82 °F, with excellent filtration for a large, heavy-feeding fish — the species can be maintained as a single specimen. Water should be warm and near-neutral (pH 6.5–7.5); hard alkaline water is inappropriate. Because the skin is entirely scaleless, copper-based treatments and many proprietary medications must be used at reduced doses or avoided; the species shares this sensitivity with loaches, puffers and other naked-skinned fish. The locking pectoral and dorsal spines are formidable — never attempt to net this fish. Use a large container to transfer it. Any tankmates must be substantially larger than the goliath catfish's gape, which, even on a juvenile, is deceptively wide.

Conservation

Brachyplatystoma vaillantii has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). It is an important food fish throughout Amazonia and the Guianas, intensively targeted by commercial gillnet and longline fisheries. Catch data suggest significant pressure on wild populations in some parts of its range, and its extraordinary long-distance migratory dependence on intact river connectivity makes it vulnerable to hydroelectric dam construction, which can block or fragment spawning migrations.

Conservation concerns centre on the combination of heavy commercial fishing pressure and the proliferation of large dams in the Brazilian Amazon and its tributaries. The species' reproduction depends on thousands of kilometres of open river between estuarine nursery grounds and Andean spawning zones; any fragmentation of that corridor directly impacts recruitment. The aquarium trade draws on wild-caught juveniles or commercially farmed stock.
