Taxonomy & naming
Ictalurus meridionalis was described by the German-British ichthyologist Albert Günther in 1864. It belongs to the family Ictaluridae, the North American catfishes, and to the genus Ictalurus, which includes the widely farmed channel catfish (I. punctatus) and the various bullheads and blue catfish of the Mississippi drainage and neighbouring rivers. The Catalog of Fishes treats Ictalurus meridionalis as a valid species.
The genus name Ictalurus derives from Greek ichthys (fish) and aïluros — a fanciful compound conventionally rendered as "fish cat", a reference to the barbels shared by the whole family. The epithet meridionalis is Latin for "southern", fitting for a species that sits at the southern edge of the ictalurid range, extending the family's distribution well into Mesoamerica rather than stopping at the U.S.–Mexico border like most of its relatives.
Morphology
Ictalurus meridionalis shows the classic ictalurid body plan: a stout, laterally compressed trunk, a broad head, eight barbels around the mouth (including the long paired maxillary barbels), a small adipose fin, and a moderately forked caudal fin. Like all catfishes in this family it is scaleless, with smooth, naked skin rather than plates or scales — a detail that matters directly for how it should be medicated in captivity.
FishBase lists a maximum length of 28.5 in SL, placing this species solidly among the large-bodied Ictalurus rather than the smaller madtoms or dwarf bullheads. As in other ictalurids, the dorsal and pectoral fins carry a stiff, serrated spine that can be locked erect; these spines are a genuine hazard when handling the fish and are not merely decorative.
Habitat
The species is native to Central America, recorded from the Grijalva River basin spanning southern Mexico (notably Chiapas) and Guatemala, with additional Mexican records noted by regional ichthyofauna surveys. This places it among the southernmost-ranging members of Ictalurus, a genus whose center of diversity is otherwise the rivers and lakes of the United States and northern Mexico.
Ictalurids as a family are cool- to warm-temperate river and lake fish rather than tropical species built for a heated aquarium; several congeners tolerate cold winters and do not require, or even want, sustained tropical heat. Specific published temperature and pH ranges for I. meridionalis itself are not available in the sources reviewed, so keepers should treat it as a temperate-leaning riverine species and avoid assuming the warm, soft-water regime typical of many aquarium tropicals.
Feeding
Direct dietary data for Ictalurus meridionalis was not found in the sources reviewed, but the genus is well studied through its widely kept congeners. Blue catfish (I. furcatus), a close relative, is documented as a nocturnal predator that takes fish, aquatic invertebrates and crustaceans — a pattern typical of larger Ictalurus species, and a reasonable guide to what this species eats in the wild: essentially anything it can catch and swallow, hunted mostly after dark.
In captivity, large Ictalurus take meaty foods readily — whole fish, prawn, and large sinking pellets — and should never be housed with tankmates small enough to be swallowed. Given its 28.5 in maximum size, an adult I. meridionalis is a genuine piscivore capable of eating fish that many aquarists would consider mid-sized.
Mating
Specific courtship behaviour has not been documented for I. meridionalis, but Ictaluridae as a family are well characterized cavity spawners. Based on the biology of Ictalurus punctatus, the best-studied congener, pairs seek out a cavity, hollow, undercut bank or similar enclosed space and spawn together there rather than scattering eggs in open water. Spawning in related species is triggered by rising spring and summer temperatures, generally once the water warms into the low-to-mid 20s °C.
After spawning, egg development in Ictalurus is temperature-sensitive: cold water slows development and promotes fungal infection of the egg mass, so a warm, stable cavity is important to reproductive success. There is no indication that I. meridionalis departs from this family-wide pattern.
Breeding
Ictalurus meridionalis is a cavity nester in which the male guards the egg mass, the standard ictalurid breeding mode also seen in channel catfish and the bullheads. After the female deposits eggs in a cavity or hollow, the male fans and defends the clutch until it hatches, providing active parental care rather than abandoning the eggs.
This species is not documented as bred in home aquaria — unsurprising given its large adult size, and consistent with the broader pattern among big Ictalurus, which are propagated commercially at pond or hatchery scale (as with farmed channel catfish) rather than in a display tank. Aquarists should not expect to replicate spawning conditions in a typical setup; this is a fish to keep and appreciate, not to breed.
In the aquarium
The single most important fact for any prospective keeper is size: Ictalurus meridionalis reaches at least 28.5 in SL, a length that no ordinary home aquarium can accommodate as an adult. Small juveniles are sometimes available through the trade, but this is a textbook size-trap species — a manageable 4 in youngster will, with feeding, grow into a fish that needs a pond or a very large public-style system, not a living-room tank. Prospective keepers should have a realistic long-term plan (a large outdoor pond in a suitable climate, or a public aquarium placement) before acquiring one.
Beyond size, care follows general ictalurid rules. The skin is scaleless, so this species is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper-based medications and many standard treatments — dose conservatively, generally at reduced strength. The dorsal and pectoral spines lock rigid and are serrated; they readily snag in a net and can jab the handler, so move the fish in a container rather than netting it. As a nocturnal predator it appreciates cover and will eat any tankmate small enough to swallow, so companions must be chosen — if at all, and only in a suitably enormous system — for size alone.
Conservation
Ictalurus meridionalis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List; its status is Not Evaluated. This is common among catfishes restricted to a single river basin or a limited transboundary range that has not drawn the same conservation attention as more widespread or commercially significant species.
Its range in the Grijalva River basin of Chiapas and Guatemala places it in a watershed subject to damming, water abstraction and land-use pressure, which are relevant long-term concerns for a riverine species with a restricted native distribution, even though no formal assessment quantifies the current threat level. In the absence of a Red List evaluation, its conservation status should be treated as genuinely unknown rather than assumed safe.
