Taxonomy & naming
Kryptopterus paraschilbeides was described by Heok Hee Ng in 2003 in the journal Tropical Natural History, from material collected in the Mekong River drainage. It belongs to the family Siluridae — the true catfishes and sheatfishes of Europe, Asia and parts of Africa — within the genus Kryptopterus, which contains the transparent "glass catfishes" familiar from the aquarium trade alongside a number of far less well-known river species.
The epithet paraschilbeides signals a resemblance to Kryptopterus schilbeides, another Southeast Asian glass catfish, rather than describing any trait of its own; para- is Greek for "beside" or "near", so the name essentially reads "near-schilbeides". Genus-level revisions of Kryptopterus and its relatives have shuffled species between Kryptopterus, Ompok, Silurichthys and other silurid genera over the decades, but the original cache and current sources give no evidence that K. paraschilbeides itself has carried a different combination since its description; it is treated here under Kryptopterus as described.
Morphology
Like other members of its genus, Kryptopterus paraschilbeides has the elongated, laterally compressed, scaleless body typical of glass catfishes, with a long anal fin running most of the length of the underside and a small, unforked or barely forked adipose region reduced or absent as in related species. Reported maximum size is only about 3.5 in standard length, making it one of the smaller Kryptopterus.
The original 2003 description by Ng distinguishes the species from its close relative K. schilbeides on fine points of morphology — proportions, fin-ray counts and other diagnostic characters typical of a formal species description — but a detailed account of its live coloration and degree of transparency has not surfaced in the sources available here. Data is sparse on this point; readers should not assume it shares the fully glass-clear appearance of the popular aquarium species Kryptopterus vitreolus and Kryptopterus bicirrhis without confirmation.
Habitat
The species is known from the Mekong River drainage of mainland Southeast Asia, the type locality given in its original description. As with many Mekong-basin fishes, it is a demersal, freshwater species associated with the river system's channels and connected habitats, though a fine-grained account of its preferred microhabitat has not been located.
