Taxonomy & naming
Yasuhikotakia caudipunctata was described by Taki and Doi in 1995 from specimens collected in the Mekong River drainage of Laos, with the type locality at Pakse in Champasak Province and Vientiane. The species was originally placed in the broad genus Botia and appeared in early hobbyist literature as Botia caudipunctata; the parentheses around the authority names in the current combination reflect that the original placement differed from the genus it now inhabits.
The genus Yasuhikotakia was erected by Kottelat in 2004 when the unwieldy old catch-all Botia was divided into several natural groups. Yasuhikotakia accommodates a cluster of mid-sized Mekong and Indochinese botiids — among them the popular skunk loach Y. morleti and the chain loach Y. sidthimunki — of which Y. caudipunctata is one of the less commonly seen members. The family Botiidae unites the botiid loaches, a group separate from the Cobitidae (the traditional 'true loaches') though the two have long been lumped together in older accounts. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the currently accepted name.
Morphology
Yasuhikotakia caudipunctata is a compact, somewhat laterally compressed botiid reaching about 3.5–4 in standard length. Its most distinctive marking is the large blackish blotch on the caudal peduncle that gives the species its name, complemented by one or two small, vertically elongated bars on the dorsal half of the body behind the dorsal-fin base, and numerous small blackish dots scattered across the caudal fin — a spotted tail that sets it apart from close relatives at a glance. The dorsal fin has eight branched rays, a diagnostic character noted in the original description.
Like all botiids, this species carries an erectile suborbital spine — a sharp, forked spine seated in a groove beneath each eye that can be deployed defensively. This spine readily snags nets and can puncture an unwary hand; the fish should be moved in a container rather than a mesh net. The body is covered in tiny, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin effectively bare to the touch, a feature shared across the family and one that has direct implications for medication sensitivity.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the Mekong River drainage, with confirmed records from Laos (Pakse, Champasak Province; Vientiane area) and possibly from eastern Thailand where tributaries drain into the Mekong system. It inhabits well-oxygenated, flowing freshwater with rock, gravel and sand substrates — the swift, structured river and tributary habitats typical of the mid-Mekong lowlands and foothills.
Water conditions in its native rivers are warm, ranging from approximately 73–86 °F, with pH values of 6.0–7.5 and moderate hardness. The species is strictly a freshwater fish and is not tolerant of brackish water or cold conditions. In the aquarium it replicates best in a mature, stable, well-filtered system with good current, a soft substrate to protect its barbels, and plentiful rockwork and caves to provide the territorial retreats a social group of botiids needs to organise its hierarchy.
Feeding
Yasuhikotakia caudipunctata is a carnivore leaning strongly toward small invertebrates in the wild — worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans and similar benthic prey — though it also accepts vegetable matter. In the aquarium it takes quality sinking pellets and wafers, frozen foods such as bloodworm, tubifex, mysis shrimp and artemia, earthworms and chopped prawns. Like other botiids it has a noted taste for snails and will work through a population of pest snails with evident enthusiasm.
Because this species is active, social and can form a competitive feeding hierarchy, it is important to provide enough food that all members of the group — including those lower in the pecking order — are properly fed. Feeding partly after lights-out suits its partly nocturnal habits. Overfeeding must be avoided in what is an intolerant-of-waste species; quality and regularity matter more than quantity.
Mating
Sexing Y. caudipunctata is straightforward in one respect: mature females become noticeably plumper-bodied when in breeding condition, a distinction hobbyists at loaches.com have noted for the species. Beyond this visible difference in body depth, the two sexes are otherwise externally similar, making reliable sexing outside of peak condition difficult.
In the wild, spawning is linked to the seasonal monsoon flood cycle that drives botiid breeding migrations across the Mekong basin. Rising water levels, changes in water temperature and chemistry, and increased flow cue fish into reproductive condition and trigger upstream spawning migrations into shallower tributary water. Replicating these complex environmental triggers in a home aquarium is not practically achievable.
Breeding
No breeding of Yasuhikotakia caudipunctata in private aquaria has been reported. This is consistent with the pattern across botiid loaches generally: all are egg-scatterers that release eggs into flowing water with no parental care of any kind, and all are dependent on monsoon-seasonal breeding migrations that simply cannot be recreated in a domestic tank. Verified home spawnings of botiids remain vanishingly rare across the entire family.
The small number of tailspot loaches that reach the hobby are almost certainly wild-collected rather than commercially farmed, as the species is rare in the trade and lacks the volume to support the hormone-induced farm operations that supply clown loaches and a handful of other popular botiids at scale. Keepers should acquire this fish expecting to enjoy it over a long life, not to breed it.
In the aquarium
Yasuhikotakia caudipunctata is described by experienced keepers as notably assertive for a relatively small botiid — boisterous within the group and potentially aggressive toward less robust tankmates. This makes species selection important: it does best alongside other assertive, fast-moving loaches or larger fish that can hold their own, and is not ideal for a gentle community tank. A minimum tank footprint of 120 × 12 in is recommended for a proper group.
The obligate-social nature of botiids means this species must be kept in a group of at least five to six individuals, and ideally ten or more, where the formation of a natural hierarchy channels aggression constructively and produces the shoaling, clicking, play-wrestling behaviour typical of well-kept botiids. A lone tailspot loach, or a pair, will be stressed, withdrawn or persistently aggressive.
Being near-scaleless, Y. caudipunctata is sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many common treatments. It is also prone to parasitic infections including flagellate-driven 'skinny disease', a condition associated with stress and poor water quality. The system must be mature and stable, with diligent filtration, low organic waste and regular water changes — this species does not tolerate the spiking water quality that hardier fish can weather. Sand substrate protects the delicate barbels; subdued lighting and ample cover help the group settle.
Conservation
Yasuhikotakia caudipunctata has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated here. There is no published conservation assessment to draw on, and the species' rarity in the trade makes quantifying collection pressure difficult. Its apparent endemism to a relatively restricted section of the Mekong drainage in Laos and possibly adjacent Thailand is reason for at least passing concern: Mekong basin fish diversity faces ongoing pressure from dam construction, water regulation, sedimentation and commercial fishing across the river's middle and lower reaches.
The tailspot loach's scarcity in the aquarium trade probably reflects limited wild availability rather than any sustained commercial harvest; it is listed as a desirable rarity by enthusiasts rather than a volume trade fish. Until a formal assessment is conducted, nothing more concrete can be said about its conservation standing.
