Liosomadoras oncinus, the jaguar catfish, is a strikingly patterned driftwood catfish (family Auchenipteridae) from the blackwater tributaries of the Brazilian Amazon — the Branco and Trombetas rivers. Its bold dark-on-pale blotching earns the jaguar name and makes it one of the more ornamental members of a family better known for cryptic, bark-mimicking colouration. Like all auchenipterids it reproduces by internal fertilisation, a rare trick among catfishes: the male transfers sperm directly using a modified anal fin, the female stores it, and she lays fertile eggs days or weeks later with no male present. A dedicated nocturnal ambush predator, it spends the day motionless against submerged timber and comes to life after dark — a rewarding but seldom-seen oddity for the experienced aquarist.

Taxonomy & naming

Liosomadoras oncinus was first described by William Jardine in 1841. The species belongs to the family Auchenipteridae — the driftwood catfishes of South America — a group characterised by their association with submerged wood, their nocturnal habits, and, most distinctively, their use of internal fertilisation. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) treats Liosomadoras as the valid genus; the species has not circulated under major synonyms in the recent literature.

Within Auchenipteridae, Liosomadoras is a small, essentially monotypic genus whose affinities lie with the subfamily Centromochlinae (the short-bodied, wood-hugging auchenipterids) rather than with the larger, more elongate species such as Ageneiosus or Trachelyopterus. The genus name Liosomadoras is compounded from Greek roots meaning 'smooth-bodied Doras', alluding to its relatively smooth skin compared with the heavily armoured doras-relatives. The species epithet oncinus derives from the Latin oncinus (or the Greek onkinos), meaning 'hook-like' or 'barbed', likely a reference to the form of the spines or body contour.

In the aquarium trade the fish is sold most often as the jaguar catfish, occasionally as the jaguar driftwood cat, names that reflect the bold, irregular dark blotches on a pale ground that recall big-cat markings.

Morphology

The jaguar catfish is a compact, moderately deep-bodied catfish with a broad, somewhat flattened head and a body that tapers to a forked caudal fin. The ground colour is pale cream to silvery-white, overlaid with large, irregular, dark brown-to-black blotches and spots — the jaguar pattern — which extends onto the fins. Three pairs of barbels are present: a single maxillary pair and two mandibular pairs, all relatively short compared with the large pimelodid catfishes.

The skin is entirely scaleless (naked), which is a defining feature of auchenipterids and the source of the species' sensitivity to copper-based and certain other medications. The dorsal and pectoral fins each carry a stiff, serrated, locking spine that can be locked erect. These spines tangle fatally in a net and can puncture skin; the species is not known to be venomous in the clinical sense, but puncture wounds from any catfish spine carry a low infection risk and the locking mechanism makes removal difficult without injury to fish or keeper.

Reported adult size is approximately 4.5–6.5 in standard length, making this a medium-small catfish well within the range of a domestic aquarium. Males are typically slimmer; females become noticeably deeper-bodied when gravid.

Habitat

Liosomadoras oncinus is native to Brazil, recorded from the Rio Branco and Rio Trombetas — both right-bank tributaries draining northward into the lower Amazon system. These are predominantly blackwater or mixed-water rivers flowing through lowland tropical rainforest, characterised by warm temperatures, low mineral content, and acidic to near-neutral pH resulting from dissolved humic and fulvic acids leached from forest soils and leaf litter.

In the wild the species is associated with submerged wood: tangles of fallen branches, root masses, and driftwood accumulations in slow-moving or calm stretches of river. It presses itself flat against a log surface by day and ventures out to forage only in darkness. Water temperatures in its native range sit in the warm tropical band of roughly 75–82 °F, and pH is likely soft and acidic (broadly 5.5–7.0), though precise field measurements for the species' microhabitat are sparse in the published literature.

Feeding

Like all Auchenipteridae, Liosomadoras oncinus is a nocturnal benthic omnivore and micro-predator. In the wild it forages after dark along submerged wood and the river bottom for aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms — and likely takes small fish and other soft-bodied prey when available. Its relatively broad mouth and ambush posture suggest it is an opportunistic sit-and-wait predator rather than an active cruiser.

In the aquarium it readily accepts sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, frozen Mysis shrimp, earthworm pieces and similar meaty prepared foods. It is important to feed after lights-out: the jaguar catfish will not compete with active diurnal tankmates during the day and may go underfed in a community where food is consumed quickly at the surface or mid-water before sinking within its reach. A food delivery timed to shortly after the lights dim will ensure it feeds consistently.

Mating

The reproductive biology of Liosomadoras oncinus follows the Auchenipteridae pattern of internal fertilisation — one of the most unusual reproductive modes among catfishes. The male possesses a modified anal fin that functions as an intromittent organ: during courtship he manoeuvres alongside the female and transfers sperm packets directly into her genital opening. The female receives and stores viable sperm within her body, sometimes for an extended period.

This means fertilisation is internal and delayed: the female can lay fertile eggs days or even weeks after the mating encounter, with no male present at oviposition. In the wild, mating likely occurs opportunistically when individuals encounter one another during nocturnal foraging; the female then moves independently to a suitable egg-deposition site. This capacity for sperm storage is well-documented in the family broadly (and confirmed in the closely related genera Tatia, Centromochlus and Trachelyopterus) and is presumed to apply to Liosomadoras, though detailed published accounts for this species specifically are sparse.

Breeding

Liosomadoras oncinus is seldom bred in captivity and detailed aquarium breeding reports are rare in the literature. Where breeding has been documented in auchenipterids of similar size and habit, the female deposits small clutches of adhesive eggs on a hard surface — a flat stone, a broad leaf, or the underside of a piece of driftwood — after having stored the male's sperm. No parental care by either sex has been described in the family; the eggs and larvae are left to develop unguarded.

To attempt breeding, the aquarist would need a well-conditioned group including both sexes, a large tank with abundant cover, and conditions that replicate the natural dry-to-wet season transition (a period of reduced water level and temperature followed by a significant water change with slightly cooler, soft water). Even under ideal conditions, success is not guaranteed: this is a fish whose captive breeding remains poorly documented, and the aquarist should treat any spawn as a bonus rather than a primary goal.

In the aquarium

The jaguar catfish is a rewarding species for an aquarist willing to meet its specific needs and accept that it may be invisible for most of the day. An adult at 4.5–6.5 in SL is comfortable in a tank of around 40–55 US gal with a long footprint; the priority is horizontal swimming room and abundant wood structure rather than depth. Provide several substantial pieces of driftwood arranged to create tight crevices and overhangs — the fish will select one or two favourite retreats and spend daylight hours motionless inside them.

Water quality should mirror the blackwater Amazon tributaries of its origin: warm (75–82 °F), soft to moderately soft, and slightly acidic to neutral (pH 5.5–7.0). Filtration should be gentle enough to avoid powerful current in the shelter zones, though moderate flow elsewhere is acceptable. Leaf litter on the substrate reinforces the tannin chemistry and gives the fish a more natural environment.

Two care cautions are non-negotiable. First, the skin is entirely scaleless, making the species sensitive to copper-based medications and to many standard fish treatments — always dose at half the label rate (or use copper-free alternatives) and monitor closely. Second, never net this fish: the locking pectoral spines will tangle immediately and can injure both the fish and the keeper. Use a container or bag to move it. Compatible tankmates are calm, similarly sized fish that are active by day and leave the bottom undisturbed at night; avoid boisterous or nippy species and anything small enough to be eaten.

Conservation

Liosomadoras oncinus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Its known range — the Rio Branco and Rio Trombetas in the Brazilian Amazon — is relatively restricted, and the species' dependence on intact blackwater forest-river habitat makes it potentially vulnerable to deforestation, siltation and water-quality changes associated with land conversion in its catchments.

The aquarium trade in this species appears to rely on wild collection, as captive breeding is rarely achieved. Sustainable wild-harvest of a naturally rare and slow-maturing wood-associated catfish deserves monitoring, though no formal assessment of its population status exists. Aquarists sourcing this fish are encouraged to favour suppliers who can attest to responsible, legal collection from managed Brazilian export streams.
