Taxonomy & naming
Megalechis thoracata was originally described by Achille Valenciennes in 1840, at the time under the old genus Callichthys, and the species passed through Hoplosternum before a 2017 revision formally erected the genus Megalechis. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) now treats Megalechis thoracata as the valid combination, separating it from the closely related Hoplosternum littorale, which is larger and has a plain, scaleless-looking lateral plate arrangement compared with thoracata's spotted pattern.
The family Callichthyidae encompasses the armoured catfishes of South America, including the corydoradine cories and the callichthyine heavyweights — Hoplosternum, Megalechis, Dianema and Callichthys. Megalechis thoracata sits within the callichthyine lineage. A second species in the genus, Megalechis picta, is described from parts of Guyana and Venezuela; thoracata is the more widespread and common trade species.
The epithet thoracata is from the Latin thorax (breastplate, chest-armour), alluding to the stout bony scute coverage of the ventral surface. Spotted hoplo (from Hoplosternum, its former genus) and cascade catfish are the two most common vernacular names in the English-language trade.
Morphology
This is a robust, deep-bodied catfish. Adults reach 8–9.5 in standard length, with females tending toward the larger end and males slightly smaller. The body is covered along the flanks by two rows of overlapping bony scutes rather than true scales — the fish is effectively wearing jointed armour, which gives the family its name. A dark, irregular spotted pattern is scattered over a brownish-olive or grey-brown ground colour; juveniles carry the spots more crisply and the pattern can fade in large adults. The belly is pale.
Three pairs of barbels are present: one pair of long, unbranched maxillary barbels and two shorter, branched mental barbels on the lower jaw. The dorsal and pectoral fins each bear a stiff, serrated, locking spine — the pectoral spines in particular can be locked erect and are strong enough to pierce skin. These spines tangle readily in a net and can injure the keeper; always move this fish in a container, not with a net.
Both sexes are outwardly similar, but breeding males develop a noticeably thicker, reddish-orange or reddish-brown flush to the pectoral spines and the underside, a colour cue that deepens during spawning condition. This is one of the few reliable visual indicators of sex and reproductive readiness.
Habitat
Megalechis thoracata is native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins and to the Río de la Plata–Paraná system in South America, as well as to coastal drainages of the Guianas. Its range spans lowland tropical and subtropical river systems across a broad swath of the continent. The type locality is within the Amazon basin.
In the wild it inhabits still or slow-moving water — floodplain pools, oxbow lakes, swampy tributaries and the dense marginal vegetation of river banks. It is comfortable in turbid, poorly oxygenated conditions and copes with low dissolved oxygen by surfacing to gulp air directly; it has accessory air-breathing organs and is regularly seen taking atmospheric air at the surface. Temperature in the natural range is typically 72–79 °F, and water is soft to moderately hard with a pH of roughly 6.0 to 8.0 — not a blackwater specialist, but generally soft-to-neutral rather than hard alkaline.
Feeding
Megalechis thoracata is a benthic omnivore and scavenger. In nature it forages across the bottom after dark, ingesting aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, detritus, plant material and any organic matter within reach. It is opportunistic and unfussy, not a predator that actively pursues large prey, though small fish (under about 1 in) are at risk and will be eaten.
In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of sinking foods readily: high-protein sinking pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp and similar frozen or freeze-dried invertebrates, and algae-based wafers. Because it is nocturnal and does much of its foraging after lights-out, feeding is best timed to the evening. In a busy community with faster, competing tankmates, adding food after the room lights go off ensures the hoplo gets its share rather than being beaten to the food by diurnal species.
Mating
Breeding in Megalechis thoracata follows the pattern typical of the callichthyine catfishes: the male constructs and defends a floating bubble-nest. In the approach to spawning the male's underside and pectoral spines take on a reddish flush. He begins blowing a foam raft of mucus-bound bubbles at the water surface, often beneath a broad floating leaf or anchored under an overhanging structure such as a polystyrene float, a broad-leaved plant, or the underside of a piece of Styrofoam placed on the surface.
Spawning itself is a typical callichthyid embrace: the female places her cupped pelvic fins under her mouth and the male fertilises the eggs there; she then swims upward and presses the eggs into the underside of the bubble mass. The pair may repeat this many times across a spawn session. Clutch sizes can be substantial — several hundred eggs in a healthy pair. Water temperature in the neutral-to-warm range (around 75–79 °F) combined with a slight water change and a well-conditioned pair is usually sufficient to trigger spawning without hormonal intervention.
Breeding
Megalechis thoracata is genuinely breedable in home aquaria and one of the easier callichthyid catfishes to spawn. Once eggs are placed in the bubble-nest, the male takes over entirely: he fans, guards and maintains the nest, chasing off intruders — including the female and the keeper's hand if it approaches — and the eggs typically hatch in three to five days at 75–79 °F. The fry become free-swimming within five to seven days and initially require infusoria or very fine foods; they accept baby brine shrimp nauplii and powdered fry food within a week.
For dedicated breeding, moving the male and nest (carefully, in a container) to a separate rearing tank reduces predation by other tankmates. The male can be removed once the fry are free-swimming. No special water chemistry is required — neutral, warm, clean water and a stable environment are the keys. Experienced keepers note that a group of three to five fish with at least one male typically results in natural spawning without deliberate conditioning beyond good feeding and a partial water change. Juveniles are commercially farmed in large numbers, and much of the trade supply is captive-bred rather than wild-collected.
In the aquarium
The spotted hoplo is a durable, sociable and genuinely interesting aquarium fish, but its adult size demands respect. At 8–9.5 in standard length it requires a tank of at least 55 US gal for a small group — a 75-litre tank is barely adequate for one adult, and the fish sold as juveniles in the trade will fill it within a year or two. The size trap is the most common husbandry failure with this species.
Water parameters are flexible: 72–79 °F, pH 6.0–8.0, soft to moderately hard. Fine sand substrate is preferred — the fish roots through it continuously — though bare gravel is tolerated. Provide bogwood, broad-leaved plants and caves for daytime retreats; this is a nocturnal species that hides through the day and becomes active at dusk. Because it surfaces regularly to gulp air, an air gap between the waterline and the hood is essential; a sealed, fully filled aquarium stresses the fish.
The skin is covered with bony scutes rather than true scales, and like all scaleless-plated catfishes Megalechis thoracata is sensitive to copper-based treatments and some antibiotics. Use half the standard aquarium dose, or switch to medications that specify safety for scaleless fish. The locking pectoral spines are a practical hazard — always move adults in a container, never with a net, and handle them carefully to avoid injury. In a community context it is peaceful with fish too large to swallow; small fish under 1 in are eaten. It tolerates its own kind and is best kept in a small group, though males may show territorial behaviour around a nest site during spawning.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Megalechis thoracata as Least Concern in 2003, reflecting its wide natural range across the Amazon, Orinoco and Paraná basins and a population considered stable. The species is widespread and abundant within its range, and there is no evidence of significant population decline.
The aquarium trade is supplied largely by captive-bred farm stock — this is one of the callichthyid catfishes that farms produce readily and at scale, so collection pressure on wild populations from the hobby is low. The principal conservation concern for the species is habitat modification — drainage and clearing of the floodplain wetlands, oxbow lakes and swamp margins it inhabits — but at present this has not pushed the species toward threatened status. Range-wide, Megalechis thoracata remains a common component of Neotropical lowland fish assemblages.
