Oxydoras niger, the black doradid or ripsaw catfish, is one of the largest members of the family Doradidae — the South American thorny catfishes — reaching 15.5–31.5 in or more in standard length as an adult. Sold as an endearing 2–4 in juvenile, it is one of the aquarium hobby's most extreme size traps: a fish that will grow past the capacity of nearly every home aquarium and that takes no tankmates small enough to swallow. It is armoured with rows of bony lateral scutes, carries stiff locking pectoral spines that should never meet a net, and is an exclusively nocturnal predator distributed across the Amazon and Orinoco basins.

Taxonomy & naming

Oxydoras niger was described by Achille Valenciennes in 1821. It belongs to the family Doradidae, the South American thorny or talking catfishes, a group characterised by a row of bony, thorn-bearing lateral scutes running from behind the head to the base of the tail. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) recognises Oxydoras as a valid genus distinct from the closely related Doras, and treats O. niger as the valid species name. Early workers placed large Amazonian catfishes under broad genera such as Silurus or Pimelodus, so the original combination differed from the current one; the genus Oxydoras itself was established to accommodate the larger, more heavily armoured doradids.

The family name Doradidae derives from the Greek dorados (gilded), though Oxydoras niger is anything but gilded — niger is Latin for black, naming the species' uniformly dark, almost black coloration in life. Oxydoras itself combines the Greek oxy- (sharp, pointed) with doras (leather or skin), a reference to the sharp, tooth-like odontodes on the lateral scutes and the pectoral spine.

Morphology

Oxydoras niger has the typical doradid body plan: a broad, depressed head, a robust fusiform trunk that tapers to a forked tail, and three rows of bony lateral scutes studded with recurved odontodes — the "thorns" that give the family its name. The skin between the scutes is tough and leathery rather than scaled, so it lacks true scales entirely. The overall colouration is very dark brown to black on the dorsum and flanks, sometimes lighter on the belly.

Adult standard length is reported at 15.5–31.5 in or more, placing this species firmly in the "public aquarium" size range. Three pairs of barbels are present (one maxillary pair, two mandibular pairs). Males develop prominent odontodes on the cheeks and pectoral spines, visible at close range and believed to play a role in courtship signalling. The dorsal and pectoral fin spines are stiff, serrated and can be locked erect — the same mechanism that makes doradids nearly impossible to remove from a net without injury to fish or keeper.

Habitat

Oxydoras niger is native to the Amazon and Orinoco river basins of South America, one of the largest freshwater systems on Earth. It inhabits main-channel and large tributary environments — the broad, turbid white-water rivers typical of the lowland Amazon — and is most active after dark in the benthic zone, resting among submerged logs, root tangles or river-bottom debris by day.

Water conditions in these systems are warm and typically soft to neutral: temperatures around 75–82 °F, pH broadly in the range of 6.0–7.5, and low conductivity are representative of the Amazonian whitewater and clearwater rivers it uses. This is not a blackwater specialist — the Amazon mainstem and its large tributaries span a range of conductivity values — but it is not adapted to hard, alkaline conditions either.

Feeding

Oxydoras niger is a large nocturnal piscivore and opportunist carnivore. It will consume any fish or aquatic creature it can fit in its mouth, which at adult size includes most medium-sized fish. In the wild it forages over the river bottom after dark, taking fish, large invertebrates and carrion.

In the aquarium it accepts large meaty foods: whole or cut fish pieces, large prawns, earthworms, and sinking carnivore pellets of appropriate size. Smaller food items are quickly ignored or go uneaten. Food should be offered after lights-out. Any tankmate small enough to be swallowed will be treated as food — this is not a community fish by any practical definition at adult size.

Mating

Mating behaviour in Oxydoras niger has not been documented in detail in the aquarium literature, and virtually nothing is published on courtship under captive conditions. The male's pronounced cheek odontodes are believed to serve a signalling or tactile role during courtship encounters, based on comparison with other doradids where males with enlarged odontodes approach females prior to spawning.

As with most large Siluriformes, wild populations are presumed to undertake seasonal spawning linked to flood-pulse hydrology, but the specific cues and mate-selection behaviours have not been described for this species. Breeding in the home aquarium has not been achieved.

Breeding

Oxydoras niger has not been bred in home aquaria, and captive breeding is not reported in the hobby literature. Like other large Amazonian catfishes — pimelodids, large bagrids and similar species — it is of a size and biology suited to farm- or hormone-induced breeding under commercial aquaculture conditions, not home tanks. The few individuals in captivity worldwide are wild-collected.

The breeding mode for doradids in general is open-water egg-scattering with little or no parental care, triggered by seasonal flooding and linked to large-scale river migrations, but this has not been confirmed specifically for O. niger in controlled conditions. Keepers should regard this as a species that will not breed in home aquaria.

In the aquarium

Oxydoras niger is a spectacular but deeply impractical aquarium fish for almost anyone reading this. Juveniles are sold at 2–4 in and are genuinely appealing — dark, armoured, whisker-forward catfishes with visible personality. But the adult size of 15.5–31.5 in or more means this fish will outgrow a typical home aquarium completely within a few years. Honest minimum housing would be a purpose-built pond or a public-aquarium system with thousands of litres of volume and extremely powerful filtration; a standard 80–160 US gal home tank will hold a juvenile but not an adult. Potential buyers must understand this before purchase.

Two physical features demand specific care. First, the skin is plated with bony scutes but lacks true scales, placing it in the medically sensitive category — copper-based medications and many treatments should be applied at conservative doses or avoided entirely. Second, the pectoral and dorsal spines lock erect and are serrated; a netted fish entangles instantly and the spines can penetrate skin. Always move this fish in a container (bucket or deep bowl), never a net. The fish is strictly nocturnal, spending daylight hours motionless in cover; provide large cave structures or deep overhangs and feed only after lights-out. Any tankmate smaller than roughly half the catfish's own body length is a potential prey item.

Water should be warm (75–82 °F), soft to neutral (pH 6.0–7.5), well-oxygenated, and very clean. Filtration must handle the waste load of a large predatory fish, which is substantial.

Conservation

Oxydoras niger has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no current threat category. It is a widespread species distributed across the vast Amazon and Orinoco basin systems and is not believed to be under acute threat at the range-wide scale.

Like most large Amazonian catfishes, it is entirely dependent on the health of lowland river systems that face increasing pressure from deforestation-driven sedimentation, hydropower dam construction (which can block seasonal migrations), and targeted commercial fishing. The species' dependence on the flood-pulse cycle of Amazonian rivers means that alterations to seasonal hydrology are a genuine long-term concern. The aquarium trade relies on wild-collected specimens; given the fish's impracticality for home keeping at adult size, trade pressure is probably low relative to habitat-linked pressures.
