Taxonomy & naming
Pangasius kunyit was described by Pouyaud, Teugels & Legendre in 1999 as part of a revision of the "Pangasius kunyit complex", which split what had been lumped together under older names into several distinct Southeast Asian species. It belongs to the family Pangasiidae, the shark catfishes, within the order Siluriformes — a family that has been repeatedly revised at the genus and species level as researchers work through its many superficially similar river giants. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes both treat Pangasius kunyit as a valid, currently accepted species within the genus Pangasius.
The species name kunyit is Javanese for "turmeric" or "saffron", referring to the warm yellow-gold tone of the fish's body and fins — a useful field character among a genus whose members are otherwise easy to confuse. As with several of its Pangasius relatives, older aquarium literature and trade lists have sometimes conflated P. kunyit with similar Sumatran and Bornean shark catfishes; the 1999 revision was specifically written to untangle this complex, so specimens identified before that date should be treated with some caution.
Morphology
Pangasius kunyit is a moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed shark catfish with the silhouette typical of the genus: a spade-shaped ("spatulate") head, a high-set dorsal fin bearing a single, unusually robust and stiffly locking spine, a long anal fin with 30–33 soft rays, and a deeply forked tail built for cruising open water. The mouth carries short palatine tooth plates and barbels typical of the family. Body colour is silvery overall with the yellow-gold wash that gives the species its name, most visible on the flanks and fins of fresh specimens.
Like all Pangasiidae, P. kunyit is scaleless — its skin has no scales for protection, which has direct consequences for medicating it (see "In the aquarium"). Reported maximum size is 27.5 in standard length in females, which for a laterally compressed river fish of this build translates to a genuinely large aquarium or pond animal; this is not a species that stays small.
Habitat
The species is native to Southeast Asian river systems: on Sumatra the Musi, Batang Hari and Indragiri drainages; on Borneo the Mahakam, Kapuas and Barito rivers of Kalimantan and the Kinabatangan River in Sabah, Malaysia; and the Mekong delta in Vietnam. It occupies large lowland rivers and their floodplains, living in open, benthopelagic water rather than hugging cover.
Water temperature across its range runs roughly 73–82 °F, with pH generally 6.0–7.5 (tolerant of somewhat more acidic water at higher temperatures) and moderate dissolved oxygen. Pangasiidae as a group are euryhaline and P. kunyit can tolerate brackish conditions up to around 6 ppt salinity, reflecting the tidal, floodplain-influenced lower reaches of the rivers it inhabits.
Feeding
Pangasius kunyit is a large nocturnal predator. The genus as a whole is omnivorous to predatory, taking zooplankton, aquatic invertebrates, molluscs and crustaceans, small fish, and — opportunistically during floods — fruit and plant matter that washes into the water. P. kunyit itself will consume essentially any fish or invertebrate small enough to swallow.
In captivity it takes large meaty foods readily: whole fish, prawn and other seafood, and sinking pellets sized for a big predatory catfish. Because of its size and predatory habits, any tankmate must be too large for it to swallow whole — this is not a species that can be trusted with smaller community fish.
Mating
Specific courtship behaviour for Pangasius kunyit is not well documented. Across Pangasiidae generally, spawning is tied to seasonal river cues — rising water levels and monsoon flooding trigger migration and reproductive readiness in the wild. Replicating these cues reliably outside a river system is very difficult, which is one reason natural, unassisted spawning is essentially unrecorded for this species in captivity.
Breeding
As with the other large Pangasiidae, Pangasius kunyit is farm- or hormone-bred at commercial scale and is essentially not bred in the home aquarium. Commercial hatcheries induce spawning with hormone injections because natural environmental cues are difficult to replicate outside a river system, and the extreme adult size of the species — over 27.5 in — puts genuine broodstock husbandry far beyond any private setup. There is no meaningful record of home-aquarium breeding for this species, and none should be expected: keepers who acquire P. kunyit should plan for a large, permanently non-breeding specimen rather than a breeding project.
In the aquarium
Pangasius kunyit is a classic size-trap fish: juveniles sold in the trade are small, silvery and unremarkable-looking, but this species reaches at least 27.5 in SL as an adult, and most home aquariums — even large ones — cannot house it long-term. Anyone considering this species should plan for a pond, very large system, or public-aquarium-scale tank, not a standard fish tank, and should think hard before buying a juvenile on impulse.
Because it is scaleless, P. kunyit is more sensitive than scaled fish to copper and to many medications; treatments should be dosed conservatively, often at half the labelled rate, as with loaches, puffers and true eels. It also carries a notably robust, stiff, locking dorsal spine along with locking pectoral spines — these can jam a net and jab a keeper, so the fish should always be moved in a container rather than netted. It is a nocturnal predator that needs cover during the day and will eat any tankmate small enough to swallow, so companions must be chosen purely by size.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Pangasius kunyit as Least Concern. It has a fairly wide distribution across several major Sumatran and Bornean river systems plus the Mekong delta, and no imminent range-wide threats are documented.
As with other large Southeast Asian river catfishes, local pressures — damming, sedimentation, and overfishing within individual drainages — are the more relevant long-term concerns even where the species-wide assessment remains favourable. The aquarium trade for this species is a minor factor compared with fisheries and aquaculture use across its range.
