Pao palembangensis, the dragon puffer or humpback puffer, is a stout, sedentary freshwater tetraodontid of the rivers, streams and ponds of Sundaland and mainland Southeast Asia — Thailand, Laos, Malaysia and the Indonesian archipelago. Reaching about 7.5–8 in standard length, it is among the larger puffers available to the hobby, clad in rich chocolate-brown above and pale and mottled below, with striking orange eyes. A solitary, territorial ambush predator built for crushing molluscs, it demands careful husbandry, a spacious single-species tank, and a steady supply of hard-shelled prey to keep its ever-growing beak worn down. Rare in the trade and seldom bred in captivity, it rewards the patient specialist with an almost reptilian presence in the aquarium.

Taxonomy & naming

Pao palembangensis was described by the Dutch physician and prolific ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in 1852, with the type locality implied by the name — Palembang, on the Musi River in South Sumatra, Indonesia. It was originally placed in the broad catch-all genus Tetraodon, and for well over a century hobbyists and the aquarium literature referred to it as Tetraodon palembangensis.

The genus Tetraodon was substantially revised following molecular and morphological work in the early twenty-first century. The name Tetraodon is now restricted to the puffers of tropical Africa, and the Asian freshwater species were redistributed among several resurrected or newly erected genera. The Mekong and Sundaland river puffers — the group to which this species belongs — were placed in Pao, a genus erected by Kottelat in 2013. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names, records the current valid combination as Pao palembangensis (Bleeker, 1852).

The common names dragon puffer and humpback puffer both circulate in the trade, the latter referencing the distinctly arched dorsal profile of adults.

Morphology

Pao palembangensis is a robustly built tetraodontid, reaching approximately 7.5–8 in standard length — large by the standards of the hobby puffer market. The body is deep and somewhat compressed laterally, with a pronounced dorsal hump that gives rise to one of its common names; the ventral surface is broad and flattened, as in most puffers that rest on the substrate.

The dorsal ground colour is rich chocolate-brown to dark olive-brown, often with irregular pale mottling or reticulation; the belly is pale cream or whitish, frequently with a mottled pattern where the dark and pale zones meet. The orange-gold eyes are large and mobile — each rotates independently, a feature common to the family. The four teeth are fused into a hard parrot-like beak, divided by a central suture into upper and lower halves; this beak is the fish's primary tool for prying molluscs from their shells and grows continuously throughout life.

The skin is scaleless and carries no functional gill covers — the gills open through a narrow slit behind the pectoral fin base. Puffers can inflate themselves by gulping water as a defence response; they should never be lifted into open air, as inflating with air rather than water can trap gas they cannot expel.

Habitat

The dragon puffer is a freshwater species native to slow-moving rivers, streams and ponds across the Sundaland region — Sumatra, Borneo and the Thai-Malay Peninsula — as well as mainland Indochina including Thailand and Laos. It is not a brackish fish; its native waters are soft to moderately hard and near-neutral, typical of the lowland river systems of the region.

It is a sedentary, bottom-associated species, spending much of its time motionless among submerged wood, rocky substrate or leaf litter, relying on cryptic colouration rather than speed to avoid detection and surprise prey. Aquarium records and the Seriously Fish species account place it in water of 75–82 °F, pH 6.8–7.6 and moderate hardness of 8–20°dH, broadly consistent with the lowland rivers of Sundaland. Good oxygenation matters — the rivers it occupies are seldom fully stagnant, and the species performs poorly in poorly aerated aquaria.

Feeding

Pao palembangensis is a durophagous molluscivore — a crusher of hard-shelled prey. The heavy beak and powerful jaw musculature are adapted for demolishing the shells of freshwater snails and small bivalves, and this is both its primary wild diet and a non-negotiable component of aquarium feeding. Without regular access to snails or unshelled shellfish, the beak overgrows and can no longer close properly, ultimately preventing the fish from feeding at all; periodic beak trimming by a veterinarian becomes necessary if dietary wear is inadequate.

In the aquarium, a rotation of live or frozen snails (ramshorn, pond snails, bladder snails), small freshwater mussels, shrimp and hard-shelled crustaceans provides the mechanical wear the beak requires. Juveniles should be offered food every other day; adults, with a slower metabolism, do well on one to two feedings per week. Soft foods such as worms, strips of fish flesh or mussel meat can supplement the diet but should not replace hard-shelled items. The fish feeds in an ambush style — it will strike at prey placed directly in front of it rather than actively hunting across open water.

Mating

Captive reports of Pao palembangensis spawning are scarce, but breeding has been documented. The mating behaviour appears to follow the pattern recorded in related Pao species such as P. suvattii and P. baileyi: the male courts and pursues a gravid female prior to spawning, and after eggs are deposited he assumes sole guardianship of the clutch. No lasting pair bond forms — the male's investment is in protecting the eggs, not the female.

Within the family Tetraodontidae there is no bubble-nesting and no mouthbrooding; puffers are substrate spawners, and the only form of parental care documented is paternal egg-guarding. The inherent territorial aggression of the male — a consistent trait in the genus — appears to extend to active defence of the spawn site against intruders during incubation.

Breeding

Captive breeding of Pao palembangensis has been achieved but remains rare, and organised propagation does not exist in the trade. Spawning has been recorded in cave-style setups: a flat stone, ceramic pipe or similar hard horizontal surface serves as the spawning site, and the female deposits roughly 100 eggs per clutch, each approximately 0.5 in in diameter, on or near this surface. The male then guards the eggs closely, fanning and tending the clutch until hatching.

At 77–79 °F the eggs hatch in approximately ten days. The fry are relatively robust at hatching and accept brine shrimp nauplii and small frozen bloodworm immediately; there is no extended yolk-sac phase to manage. Conditioning broodstock on a varied diet of live snails and hard-shelled prey appears to be important before any breeding attempt. Captive-bred specimens are essentially unavailable in the commercial trade.

In the aquarium

Pao palembangensis is a specialist fish for an experienced keeper. It is aggressive and fiercely territorial — a large, powerful predator that will attack and injure or kill virtually any tankmate, including other puffers and other members of its own species. It must be kept as a single specimen in a dedicated aquarium; attempts to house a pair carry serious risk of injury unless the tank is very large and heavily subdivided with visual barriers. Aquarium Glaser recommends a minimum of 30 US gal for a single adult, with more space always preferable.

The tank should offer multiple shaded retreats — rocky caves, overturned ceramic pots, lengths of pipe — so the fish can rest, ambush prey and feel secure. Strong filtration and generous water changes are essential: puffers produce heavy biological waste and deteriorate quickly in fouled water. This species is strictly freshwater and does not benefit from salt additives.

As a scaleless fish without true gill covers, the dragon puffer is highly sensitive to medications; copper-based treatments must never be used, and all other medications should be dosed cautiously and at reduced rates. It must never be lifted into air — inflating with air rather than water traps gas the fish cannot expel, which can be fatal. Tetrodotoxin is present in the skin and internal organs; it poses no danger in the aquarium but hands should be washed after maintenance and the fish must never be consumed. Provided with hard-shelled food, clean well-oxygenated water and adequate space, the dragon puffer is a long-lived and remarkably characterful aquarium subject.

Conservation

Pao palembangensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no IUCN status at this time. Its native range spans the lowland rivers and ponds of Sundaland — Sumatra, Borneo and the Thai-Malay Peninsula — and parts of mainland Indochina, regions that have experienced some of the fastest rates of tropical deforestation and wetland conversion in Asia over recent decades.

The principal threats to this species are habitat-based: loss of lowland riverine and floodplain habitat through agricultural expansion (particularly oil palm and rubber), river modification for irrigation and hydroelectric schemes, and degraded water quality from agricultural runoff and industrial pollution. The species is collected for the ornamental fish trade, though demand is limited and organised captive breeding does not offset collection pressure. The absence of any formal IUCN assessment means population trend data are unavailable; given the scale of habitat transformation across Sundaland, aquarists are encouraged to prefer captive-bred individuals when available and to source fish from reputable dealers who can verify origin.
