Parailia pellucida is a diminutive, transparent-bodied schilbeid catfish from the slow tributaries of the upper Mekong system in Thailand — one of the most rarely encountered members of the aquarium trade. At 1.5–2 in standard length it looks like a ghost sliver of water: the body is so optically clear that internal organs are visible under light. It has no dorsal spine, is completely scaleless, and is known chiefly from its original type-locality description; home aquarium breeding has not been confirmed.

Taxonomy & naming

Parailia pellucida was described by George Albert Boulenger in 1901, originally from Siamese rivers — the type locality encompasses tributaries draining into the upper Mekong system in what is now Thailand. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) confirms the authority as (Boulenger, 1901) with the genus Parailia, in the family Schilbeidae.

The original combination may have been Silurus pellucidus; the species was subsequently placed in Parailia, the small genus of transparent schilbeids established for this group of gracile, laterally compressed glass catfishes. Schilbeidae as a family is predominantly African, and the presence of Parailia in Southeast Asia reflects a broader biogeographic distribution of schilbeid lineages; the taxonomy has been periodically revised and the valid genus assignment follows CoF. There are no known synonyms or misidentification traps documented in the hobbyist literature, though the fish's extreme rarity means confusion with other transparent Asian catfishes (notably Kryptopterus spp. in the family Siluridae) is possible in trade.

Morphology

The defining feature of Parailia pellucida is its translucency: the body wall is so thin and depigmented that the vertebral column and organ mass are visible to the naked eye, giving the fish its epithet pellucida (clear, transparent). The body is slender and laterally compressed, with a small, terminal or slightly upturned mouth bearing fine barbels. Unlike Synodontis and many other catfishes, Parailia pellucida lacks a rigid, locking dorsal spine — the dorsal fin is soft-rayed throughout.

Adult size is approximately 1.5–2 in standard length (SL), making this one of the smallest catfishes in the schilbeid family. The skin is entirely scaleless (naked), with no bony plates, scutes or armour of any kind. The absence of protective covering has direct consequences for disease treatment. The fins are delicate and the tail is forked. Pectoral spines, if present, are not reported as strongly locking or venomous in this group, but handling should still be cautious given the fragility of the fish.

Habitat

Parailia pellucida is native to the upper Mekong tributaries in Thailand — slow-flowing lowland rivers, backwaters and small streams with soft substrates. The Mekong system in Thailand is a large, seasonally dynamic river network, and schilbeids of this type typically inhabit marginal, vegetated, slow-flow zones rather than fast-flowing main channels.

Water chemistry in these Thai tributaries is characteristically soft and acidic to neutral: temperature in the range of 72–79 °F, pH broadly acidic to neutral, low mineral content. The fish is associated with sheltered, low-flow microhabitats — leaf litter, emergent plant roots and soft sediment where it can forage at depth. Its translucency may provide camouflage in low-light benthic environments. Distribution is poorly documented; the species is considered a single-river or near-endemic with limited range data.

Feeding

Parailia pellucida is a nocturnal benthic micro-predator and omnivore, foraging over soft substrate after dark for small invertebrates, micro-crustaceans and organic detritus — the feeding mode typical of small schilbeids. In the wild it exploits the invertebrate community of the soft river bottom and marginal vegetation.

In the aquarium, the species accepts small frozen foods: micro-bloodworm, Daphnia, baby brine shrimp and similar fine-grained live or frozen invertebrate foods are the most appropriate offerings. Given its nocturnal habits, food should be provided after lights-out to ensure it competes effectively in a community setting. Prepared micro-pellets may be accepted once the fish has settled; live foods are useful for conditioning. Because of its small adult size, all food items must be suitably diminutive.

Mating

No mating behaviour has been documented for Parailia pellucida in the aquarium or described in the published literature. Its schilbeid relatives are not brood parasites and do not build nests; the family as a whole tends toward open-water or substrate egg-scattering with little or no parental care, but this has not been confirmed specifically for this species.

Data are sparse. Given the extreme rarity of P. pellucida in the hobby and the absence of any reported spawning accounts, nothing substantive can be said about courtship displays, sex-ratio preferences, triggering conditions or spawning cues. Keepers interested in attempting breeding should document any observations carefully, as even basic behavioural data would be a contribution to what is known.

Breeding

No confirmed aquarium breeding of Parailia pellucida has been recorded. The species is exceptionally rare in the trade and has not been propagated in captivity with any reproducibility. Without breeding accounts, the mode must be considered unknown; a substrate egg-scatter with no parental care is consistent with the broader schilbeid pattern but cannot be asserted as confirmed for this species.

Any aquarist who does succeed in spawning P. pellucida should condition a small group on a varied diet of live and frozen invertebrates, maintain the soft acidic water parameters appropriate to the type locality, and provide dense plant cover or leaf litter to simulate natural microhabitat. Any successful account would represent a genuine first for the hobby.

In the aquarium

Parailia pellucida is among the most demanding and unusual catfishes available, not because of any aggression or size problem but because of its fragility and rarity. Its adult size of 1.5–2 in SL means it is genuinely a nano-to-small-tank fish — there is no size trap here — but the scaleless skin makes it highly sensitive to copper-based treatments and to many standard aquarium medications. Half-dose is at minimum advised; ideally, disease prevention through pristine water quality and quarantine is preferable to treatment. Treat this fish as you would a glass catfish or a delicate loach in terms of medication sensitivity.

The aquarium should replicate the slow-flowing, heavily planted, soft-substrate habitat of upper Mekong tributaries: soft, acidic to neutral water (pH approximately 6.0–7.2), temperature 72–79 °F, low flow, dense cover of fine-leaved plants or leaf litter. Because the fish is nocturnal and shy, subdued lighting and a dark substrate help it settle. It should not be housed with boisterous or large tankmates; a species tank or a quiet community of similarly sized, soft-water fish is appropriate. It is not known to carry strongly locking or venomous spines, but its delicacy means a soft net or container transfer is safer than aggressive netting.

Conservation

Parailia pellucida has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). Its known range is restricted to upper Mekong tributaries in Thailand, and limited survey data mean population trends are not established. The combination of restricted distribution and near-absence from the aquarium trade suggests that wild-collection pressure is minimal, but habitat degradation — river modification, sedimentation, agricultural runoff and lowland deforestation across the Mekong basin — is an ongoing concern for all small, range-restricted fish of this region.

The Mekong system in Thailand is under considerable pressure from hydropower development and land-use change, factors that particularly affect the slow-water marginal habitats this species is thought to occupy. Without a formal IUCN assessment, the true conservation status is unknown; the restricted documented range warrants monitoring. Any collection from the wild for the aquarium trade should be approached cautiously given the limited data on population size.
